About the exploding toads thing, it blows my mind that the crows could even conceive of that. Like, they had some idea of internal organs and knew that the liver wouldn't be poisonous and knew where it was located. Corvids are bonkers.

Corvids are too smart, ravens/crows are harbingers of death.

Crows are extremely smart birds, and there is some evidence that they can learn feeding techniques from their parents. If that is true, then it could be that crows who observed another crow randomly peck out a frog's liver imitated that behavior and passed it along to their offspring, who then taught others.
@Rob-dm8en
@Rob-dm8en 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting story it reminds me of is in ancient Greek mythology Prometheus had his liver(only his liver) eaten every day by an eagle and it would regrow every night since he was immortal. They say mythology is sometimes/usually just an explanation of something we didn't understand so it may not even be something new or specific to crows and may be a behaviour already observed in other birds of prey targeting specific organs.

Robert Leong: Clearly, the toads tried to steal fire and hide it in their bellies, making them fiery, and this is their punishment. Which I'm sure they find rather ironic, seeing as corvids are also thieves of fire/sunlight, as attested in Haida/Nuu-chah-nulth legend.

"Guys, I can't deal with this today, I just wanna relax and put boots on beetles. Are there any conceivable reasons we can come up with that would let us ditch our current project and shift over to boots? Anything? Yes, you in the back." "Um. Maybe their feet get too warm when they walk on hot sand? So, the boots could be some sort of protective equipment?" "Wow... wow, no, that's great, that's perfect. You can find pictures of cars that have sunk partway into the ground from liquefaction during earthquake/tremors that hit resonant effects. This principle is also probably what capsized or cracked open the hull of the Edmond Fitzgerald transport ship, after the main cargo hatch cover caved in during a storm, letting water into the hold full of iron ore stones.

It feels like Hank should really know that statistically, if both players are guessing blindly it doesn't matter which guesses first: Player 1 has a 1/4 chance to get it right. Player 2 has a 3/4 chance to get to guess (ie player 1 gets it wrong 3/4 times), then a 1/3 chance, for a total of (3/4)(1/3)=1/4 chance. Same chance for both players regardless of order.
@lukesteeves1291
@lukesteeves1291 5 жыл бұрын
Though now that I think about it, I think it IS better to guess second, because of the expected value of points you get. There's a 1/4 chance of P1 guessing right, and in this case they get 200 points. There's also a 1/4 chance of P2 guessing right, but in that case, P1 lost 100 points, and P2 gained 200 for a net gain of 300 points. In the other 2 cases, the result is neutral. So P2 gets on average 25 more points than P1. This might not be 100% sound - let me know if there's a flaw :)
@13vatra
@13vatra 5 жыл бұрын
Aren't you over complicating this? If player 1 has no idea what the answer is they have a 25% chance of getting it right by guessing. (Let's not go in to educated guesses on this). If player 1 gets it wrong that means there are now only 3 answers for player 2 to choose from, so a 33.33% chance of getting it right by guessing.
@0mn1vore

I'm with @@13vatra [and Hank] on this one. A 1 in 4 chance is worse than 1 of the remaining 3 options.
@lukesteeves1291
@lukesteeves1291 5 жыл бұрын
@@13vatra But this is completely the point - if you are player 2, there are 3 possibilities: Player 1 guesses right (25%), P1 guesses wrong and P2 guesses right (75%)*(33.3%), P1 guesses wrong and P2 guesses wrong (75%)*(66.6%). The only case where P2 "wins" (gets to guess the right answer) is the 75%*33.3%=25% case. If it helps, think about answering 100 questions: P1 will win 25 times, then on the remaining 75 questions, P2 will win 33% of them, which is 25 total questions. Either way both players should win 25 times out of 100.

Ok, I am curious. I worked on the bridge of a bulk carrier and also did stability at the academy. Never heard of this theory about 'water' in the cargo. We had grains and they are heavy, so we have a gap in the top of the cargo. In a heavy storm, they can shift position as a liquid does. This change in position can be deadly as it changes the stability of the ship. If it happens, the ship capsizes. Any cargo that is heavy can do this. Cargo with edges does not change position back (like coal or coke) but grains will and may actually 'slush' around dangerously. To avoid that, some bulk carries may place extra bulkhead to reduce the surface area. Can you explain what you mean a bit more? I have never heard of this theory before and I am really curious....
