Nathan Auvil most appendicitis cases are uncomplicated, which means the organ hasn't ruptured, so they can be treated with antibiotics. Only when the appendix looks like it may burst immediately is an surgery necessary. also, according to several studies, antibiotic prophylaxis should be administered before every appendectomy. feel free to lookup nih/pubmed for more.

I was taught in my A&P course that the Appendix is likely used for "priming" the body's immune system against any potential pathogens by allowing a place for bacteria to be cultivated and come into contact with immune cells. This function can sometimes backfire and cause a severe infection, but the fact that it remains within evolutionary pathways suggests that it works more often than it does not.

@@GcorpCoPrez In some way the body does have an organ serving a similar function: the thymus. If i remember correctly, this is where some immune cells (T-Lymphocytes) mature and are put in contact with antigens belonging to the body and destroyed if they react to it. It serves as a control to avoid the immune cells attacking the body.

As a human biologist and researcher, I think it is astonishing how much we still can learn about the human body. Just last year, a new possible organ was found called the interstitium. This organ is normally filled with fluid and is found in different places between a structural barrier and other internal organs (maybe I'll make a video about that!). Of course we now have to study it a lot but the reason why we only discovered the interstitium last year is that it is destroyed during normal preservation methods. Feel free to ask anything about that topic (or stem cells, since I am conducting research in this field)!

I had appendix rupture & sepsis as a kid, now in my 40ies.

Do you think stem cells have the potential to one day stop aging? What happened to stem cell teeth research I heard about 10 years ago? Do you believe research on stem cells was slowed because of pressure from religious leaders and how much progress was lost? Do you also work with crispr? What are some of your worries when it comes to potential amoral uses of what you research?

@@aleka.. I'm very sorry to hear that. Indeed, we only understand a fraction of our body due to the overwhelming complexity (there are whole laboratories just working on, for example, the role of a single protein on specific cancer types). I also know in fact from some friends of mine how long it can take in order to be diagnosed correctly. Although I don't know how much you suffer I would suggest to keep making appointments with different doctors since you have much to gain!

I had mine removed when I was 9 because it tried to kill me and later I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease (rare and new) and it’s been more than 10 years and I wonder if that is correlated
@alaric_

I had mine removed when i was 18 because of the exact symptoms like in appendicitis: fever, tiredness and intense abdominal pain exactly where the appendix is. When they opened me up, they found out that the appendix was healthy and ok but because i was already cut open on table, they removed it. They took samples and after long delibiration decided that i have either have Colitis Ulcerosa or Crohn's disease. After that i have had nothing but intestinal problems and new autoimmune diseases on a regular basis. After 23 years i have a feeling that removing the appendix put my immune system on overdrive, though to be fair, this is not based on scientific tests or such but just my gut feeling (pun inteded).

I had my gall bladder removed in the early 1980's. I had been being treated for ulcers which turned out to be a misdiagnosis at that time. Besides removing the gall bladder, they removed the appendix because they felt that, at my age (33 or 34), chances were high for appendicitis. I had been very healthy prior to this operation. After, I have asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, neuropathy, and even a runny nose! My father had appendicitis and later had heart trouble and rheumatoid arthritis. I forgot that I have heart trouble, too. No one else on either side of the family had appendectomies and no one else had heart, joint, or pancreas problems. Just dad and me with no appendices (?). Is that the right plural? Anyway, it is certainly enough to make you wonder.

I had my appendix out in my early 20s, I was laying on the floor with a sore side thinking I had a muscle issue or cramps of some sort... suddenly I knew I had an appendix infection, I just knew, I went to the doctor and said I have appendicitis lol and he said no, tell me your symptoms. We got some tests and he came to me later and said I should be a diagnostician because I got my diagnosis right. But I did not diagnose it I just knew, this was before the internet is what it is today and my biology knowledge was not bad but not this good. I asked if there was a way to save it because I knew back then how important it was as a bacterial storage and played a role in immune training of t, b cells and nk cells. I take a probiotic now to maintain intestinal flora or I get loose stools but I can say I felt very very different after removing my appendix and my health degraded, many comment that I was never the same physically and emotionally. In my late 30s now I focus on health and have managed to conquer my body whipping it into shape and teaching it who is the boss.

Just avoid taking unnecessary antibiotics. C. diff infections in young people are usually caused by antibiotics killing too many good bacteria and letting C. diff take over. C. diff is not killed by most antibiotics, so it can thrive while others are depleted. If you need them for something, like a known bacterial infection, then take probiotics and eat fermented foods with active cultures, like kefir and some yogurt. Heck, even if you never get C. diff, it’s a good idea to eat yogurt when on antibiotics because it helps prevent diarrhea and yeast infections (men and women). Yeasts can grow anywhere warm, damp, and dark.

I was born without an appendix. One consequence of never having had one is more severe infections and I am hit harder by antibiotics. A more serious problem is that I don't seem to be as able to digest plants. I ate seem to lack the microflora necessary to extract as much nutrients from Plants as other people which is why I developed a passion for spirulina systems it doesn't have cellulose. Foods containing high toxins like pork also tends to cause an immediate reaction as if it's food poisoning all the time. On the other hand, I never seem to get stomach flu. Or rather, whenever I get that type of an infection it doesn't seem to have anywhere to hide so after I vomit profusely I'm all good.

I drank the barium and they were prepping for the CT scan when the surgeon came in and was like "Yeah, your blood work says appendix is coming out NOW." Ten minutes later, I was under. They said it was the most infected appendix they'd seen, and it could have ruptured at any time. No real point in that story, just thought I'd share.

I’ve been saying for 5 years now that the appendix has some function, and not just a useless vestigial organ. A lot o doctors/researchers like to think they know all about the body, but in reality we know very little especially pertaining to the smaller nuanced connections and inner workings that get overlooked more often than not. Lots of illnesses and diseases people get, and doctors say “I don’t really know why or how this happened, but it did”. My appendix failed, not on part of its own, but caused by my pancreas which led me to think it plays some kind of function. I may be entirely wrong either way, but I can’t help but think every part of our biology no matter how small or insignificant plays a role and function.

Unruptured and early appendicitis, and detected early can be treated by antibiotics alone Unless other things causing the appendicitis But ruptured or enlarged ones requires surgery 100% Just make sure after the surgery to take some probiotics or similar products to maintain your good gut hygiene and good bacteria count. Basically, rather than your appendix doing the automatic replenshing of good bacteria. You are the one doing it to maintain its healthy function. I have experienced pain on that area before, usually the doctor of mine prescribed antibiotics, and the pain went away. Mine haven't been removed yet, but in case it gets really bad I am willing to remove it. My cousin had that removed when she was young, few years after the surgey she had one of the worst constipation and then diarrhea she experienced. Before she doesn't had those. She now drinks and eats healtier and increased probiotics in her diet, she's basically back on her normal self. the bad IBS and constipations went away or only happens minimal.

Sorry to hear that. But from what I know doctors have to remove your appendix, even if they cut you open in that area and see that the problem isn’t your appendix. Here’s why: Imagine that you are cut in the abdomen where the appendix is but they don’t touch it and just stitch you up. Now years later, for whatever reason you end up in the emergency room, unconscious and unable to give an account of your medical records. The doctors will check you and see the scar on your abdomen and think you’ve had yours removed, so they will wrongly exclude the possibility of appendix related complications. You see, it’s a problem. Pretty sure it’s in the code of conduct of most medical bodies in the world to implement this mandatory removal because of that. I’ve had mine removed for 15 years now, and nothing’s changed. I wouldn’t worry too much :)

Sterling Archer In a way, it's like removing a bomb that could go off and kill you even though it probably won't. Before very recently, no one knew that the appendix had any use other than sometimes it might swell and explode. A foot actually has a use and the negatives of cutting it off outweigh the benefits. Before now, the inverse was thought to be true for the appendix. Also, even healthy people can get an appendix that swells up and kills them.
