10:20 The way you phrased the question by including "less than," technically, means that A, B, and C are correct. If it is less than 1 in 100,000 it is also less than 1 in 10,000 and 1 in 1000.

You would be correct, if not for the fact that the actual question happened before the 10-minute mark.

For question 2 I have a better method learned when I was a student : do not look at what you're holding (also true for glasses and such), because the correction you'll involuntarily make to correct the wobble will actually increase it, where simple steadiness and looking upfront will do a better job at keeping the content steady. Plus you're actually looking where you are going, which is probably better than walking backwards.

My manager overheard me talking about wanting to design a gyro-stabilized coffee mug so I didn't spill it on my way back to my desk. She told me she worked as a cocktail waitress when she was in college and learned to not look at what she was carrying in order to prevent spills, so she agrees with you. I tried that and spilled it even worse. Go figure. I guess I'm just doomed.

I don't look at the cup. Somehow focusing on the surface level in the cup makes you overcompensate and induce a bigger oscillation. If you focus out at the real horizon you dampen the oscillation. (Works for me anyway.)

Modern fighter jets also use inherently unstable designs in order to increase maneuverability. Without the aid of modern fly-by-wire systems pilots would be unable to keep these planes in the air. The fish's small fins and its brain act as control surfaces and the fly-by-wire system. Or in this case swim-by-neurons :)

The trick not to spill coffee is not to look at it and not try to compensate. The high frequency comes mostly from trying to hold it stable and the high muscle tonus resulting.. Relax and just walk; way less sloshing that way.

what i do when i'm carrying a coffee mug is i put my thumb through the handle, and then use my four fingers to hold underneath it. that way, i have the most possible control over the tilt, because first of all i have joints for both tilt and roll axis, second of all, i have a tighter grip on it, and third, it just is far more comfortable to carry that way.

For spilling coffee problem, I would try building a floating box, like half a cube that holds the mug tightly, with 4 strings attacked to corners connected at a single point on top, and a strings that connects that point to a handle or ring that you can hold...

This is basically Science or Fiction from the Skeptic's Guide to the Universe podcast, except the participants on the SGU have to explain their reasoning for their answer. It's a great science podcast and I recommend everyone who watches SciShow to check it out. They've got 700+ episodes of science based content to listen to. It promotes Scientific Skepticism, which is a philosophy that basically says all empirical claims should be subjected to scientific scrutiny before being accepted. It's the best science podcast in the business, and it's been going for 14 years (15 on May 5th).

Hey SciShow! I am not sure how to submit an idea for the show, since I don't have Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or anything like that, but I read the most interesting story today about how there are not JUST Fraternal Twins and Identical Twins. There is an incredibly rare type that is referred to as, "Semi-Identical", and I was wondering if you could do a video on that? I thought maybe your viewers would find it fascinating, as well! Keep up the great work! ~Susan

The real solution for not spilling your beverage is to allow the cup to pivot. The fluid and cup move as a solid body and it doesn't spill. Requires a slightly different holding technique but works for cups with and without a handle.

Okay if you don't want to spill what is in your mug, you hold it with both hands around the rim. I actually do it with my finger tips and I keep my eyes on it, trying to make corrections as needed. I only ever spill when my headphone cable gets caught around the glass and I stand up suddenly. Or I'm stretching or turning with my arms out and smack something off my desk. Also don't over fill the container. Okay I'm done ranting.

Tilting the front of the coffee cup slightly downward relative to walking stability/speed with dimensional analyses and derivative theorems of Pythagorean's theorem you could calculate exactly the degree at which you should tilt your coffee cup in order to completely avoid spillage assuming you haven't filled your coffee cup all the way to the brim. =)
