Our school mascot was the polar bears, and people used to think that was a pretty lam mascot. I never thought this, but this episode just made me feel like they're an EXTRA epic mascot to have. (Plus, I mean, the colour scheme that came with it was always so refreshing! Icy purples, blues, periwinkles, whites, and more. All the photos in our classrooms and programs always felt so snowy "fresh"! Purple and white bb!)

Supposedly, some animals don't interpret the difference between human smiling and showing teeth as a sign of aggression. That might be what happened at the end, or perhaps it was just startled by the sudden burst of laughter (or, of course, possibly a combination of both).
@thanrose6 жыл бұрын
Hank had a sharp exhalation, and probably a twitch forward. Just a reaction to another show in the bag, I'm sure. Although Cas was calmer than the previous times, he still is typically wired as most foxes would be in this situation.

Interesting about the Red and Arctic Fox having only deadly interactions. Granted polar and grizzlies have violent interactions but there is also documentation of their interbreeding. Same with coyotes and wolves. So i'm surprised that there was no mention of that occurrence with the foxes.

25:31 No, they're not the only land mamals on Iceland. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mammals_of_Iceland There's a lot of mice there (some of them probably arrived with the vikings). There's also the mink and polar bears. That said, polar bears are kind of rare on Iceland just like in Norway, they only rarely go ashore on Iceland or mainland Norway mainly living in Greenland, Svalbard and Russia (as well as places like Alaska and Canada, but those are too far away from the nordic region to be relevant to their access to our region)

What would happen jf they transplanted a bunch of polar bears to Antarctic?
@danaphanous6 жыл бұрын
The polar bears would be able to survive, but it is thought that they would devastate the penguin populations who have no natural predators on land, so scientists would never condone that. As for catching seals, that would go about like it does up north. Plenty of seal species down there too.

I'd love to get a followup on the latest news about polar/brown bear interbreeding. As polar bears spend more time ashore, they will start re-integrating with the rest of the northern brown bear population. These "amber bears" will become more common. I wonder if anyone is tracking that yet, or if it is still fairly rare.

So why can’t polar bears live in the Antarctic???
@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat6 жыл бұрын
Because invasive species plus penguins. The bears would probably be fine perhaps even do well but Antarctic penguins have no land based predator (seals and sea lions eat them in water but not really on land) so penguins would suffer a lot in all likelihood.
@AndeePandCompany6 жыл бұрын
rattregoondoof it’s just so sad to think of Polar Bears going extinct. 😓
@animistchannel29836 жыл бұрын
What's happening is that as the polar bears spend more time ashore, they start breeding back into the rest of the brown bear population until the next cold climate / ice age happens. Then, the polar bear genes get more prominent in the far north again and they start heading back out. All the northern "brown" bears are essentially one species, all inter-breedable, like varieties of dogs.
@Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat6 жыл бұрын
@@animistchannel2983 that may have been what happened over the last ice age but if we let the polar bears go extinct there's no guarantee that polar bear genes will resurface. Polar bears and brown bears are certainly interbreedable and there's a possibility the genes will resurface but absolutely no guarantee. Evolution doesn't have a set course, if we lose the polar bears there's a pretty good chance (short of cloning them) that we aren't getting any more.
@animistchannel29836 жыл бұрын
rattregoondoof: You're not wrong about that. If the northern ice cap goes away and doesn't come back for millions of years, yah, there may never be another population of exactly polar bears. The thing is... and this is from an animist who really appreciates bears... if that happens, there won't be a reason for exactly polar bears either. They don't really go extinct, you just stop seeing that exact combination of extreme specializations. They blend back in to the greater worldwide population, and their descendants continue as generally brown bears. The polar bear adaptation set already exists piecemeal in the general population, by the way. If you separated all the current polar bears, you could re-breed them from their brown-furred cousins in x-number of generations if you really wanted to. (I've looked into the genetic studies on that.) People who currently live around polar bears would probably prefer you didn't, though. They are dangerous neighbors. This re-blending would happen eventually even if humans weren't running around screwing up the climate on purpose, but it would take longer, be less noticeable, maybe even more dangerous in the long run. As it is, these apex creatures are telling us about ourselves because we're making it happen so fast. Gyrfalcons have a similar problem, with fast climate change screwing up their reproductive cycles, but they don't have anywhere else to go. At least the bears have an alternate strategy. So I don't like the situation as it is. I have some hope that recent developments in energy generation and management may curtail the speed of the increasing devastation. It could be too late already, we're not sure. My concern is that we need to learn the lesson before it's too late for even more species, including ourselves. The baleful eye of Venus glares at us across a short stretch of space, reminding us of what can happen when a planet goes bad. Meanwhile, in spirit journeys, I feel the Eye of Amber Bear that has brought a warning. A few years ago, I put it like this: "The Eye of Amber (2013) I have no gender, no species, no home, no fate There is no “I” but only the Eye of Amber its gaze shining through this nexus of consciousness among the myriad fractal layers and regions of Cosmos. The world transforms, ice retreats, and White Bear comes ashore and finding Brown Bear once more, unremembered but not forgotten they recombine, and Amber emerges again its vision sweeping across the lands New creatures and old are found, lakes carved clean by glaciers fresh forests and fields among crumbling old stones Courses and channels as water recycles Mists of sky and mineral vapors, the earth’s own blood trickling The frost-locked interlude fading, the shifting lives in motion The warmth flows north, waking sleepers and cold rains surge south where ice once buried all things The vortex of change upon the face of a planet Will you call it “pozzly" and pretend it is new? No, it is not new, but of ancient relations refounded What for a while lay drowsing, separate and dormant, The earth-spirit stretches its mind and hand, opens its Eye Do you suppose it is pleased? From hibernal contentment in those parts it awakens It finds those who have Become in the interval ready to embrace its primal heart invokers' joining and shamans’ own call In new times, old friends return."
