Fun fact Dave; The fangs on a Centipede are not a part of their mouth, but actually a modified pair of legs, called Toxicognaths. At least I thought it was fun :)

Wonderful video! It inspires me to potentially try keeping this species again. I absolutely loved mine but every single one of them I purchased already had mycosis and I was never able to get rid of it… it always killed them overtime, even if they moulted ☹️. I eventually decided to stop keeping them because it was so disheartening. Your animal is gorgeous, I look forward to updates!
@toulee35512 жыл бұрын
That is heart breaking. My recommendation is this. These are mostly field collected specimens. And as we all know WC will have WC issues. If your real serious, work with importers and get to know them. If your lucky you can see the animal before you buy them, that gives you the best chances. Often when I see centipedes that have issues coming in it just gets worse. My white legs I was able to follow the importer on IG and I was able to see that they had old stock left. These were not fresh off the airport docks. I got in contact and ordered one through my local invert dealer and got an amazing quality ped. Good luck and I love following your channel!

I've said it before... and I'll say it again : These get a big NOPE from me. Even tiny ones I occasionally find scuttling about in the house gives me the creeps. A monster of this size is from my worst nightmares. Hats off to you Dave for being so calm around it. For those than can manage these, more power to you. I'll stick to my slow-moving and much more predictable beginner tarantulas. Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)

Haven't graduated up to centipedes, on account of being bitten on the calf by a small, north american one, when I was a kid. I do find them fascinating and there is a mint green one that is gorgeous. The white leg (or Peruvian giant) is now classified as a separate undescribed species, _Scolependra sp._ , since it is distinctive from the true giant _Scolependra gigantea_ (Amazonian giant). The true giant is actually very rare to encounter in the hobbyist realm. The latter is obviously more robustly built with similar lengths than the former. The general temperament of the Amazonian giant is also more explosive.
@valaquenta220 Жыл бұрын
So basically the real "scolopendra gigantea" tends to be bigger, and much nastier than this one heh?...What monsters these guys must be. I've heard that although the biggest ones are supposed to be 40 cm long, there are often records of 45-50 cm long ones. They really are the stuff of nightmares imo.

I love S. gigantea so the moment I saw the title, I knew what was coming, no need to guess. I'm at the 7th minute, though, I haven't seen the multi-legged beast just yet. Edit: I like how centipedes seemingly do the opposite you need them to do: you put the box downhill, they go uphill; you put the box uphill, they burrow in the moss; you touch them in the back, they jump at the paintbrush; you touch them in the middle so they go in that direction, they shoot away from the touch and almost out of the enclosure. They're great

Also, in this case it's nice for others who may be more knowledgeable in one area helping out other fellow creators on IDing a possibly mislabeled species so the keeper knows & can tweak their care to be more properly suited for the animal.
