Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers - Restoration Comparison

While the moodier, darker color grading of the 1996 master of Scooby-Doo Meets the Boo Brothers is usually seen as indicative of the film's intended look (after all, this is how the film has been presented for 26 years), the warmer, brighter grade on Warner's new restoration seems to reflect the original 1987 broadcast master telecine and Hanna-Barbera's original intent.

I don't care what anyone says, this movie will always hold a special place in my heart and is by far my favorite movie out of the trio between ghoul school and reluctant werewolf. For me this movie will never get old and is always fun to watch. IMO this movie is the most atmospheric and "scariest" out of the movie trio which is essentially what Scooby-Doo is all about.

Yeah. Reluctant Werewolf was just too goofy and slapstick. Boo Brothers actually feels spooky.

This movie still feels as a horror movie. The scary atmosphere of the real ghost. Especially the ghost of Uncle Beaureguard.

I prefer the darker lighting in the original; I think it's a lot more atmospheric that way. But it's still nice to finally have this movie in HD.

Idk. I dig the dark, toned down aesthetic on the left (the original). It was unique to this film and it fits it well.

That drawing of Scooby while they read the letter really makes me think of how they draw him in Zombie Island, especially with the new grading. Not entirely sold with how the lines seem to contrast less with the colors themselves, but i think it could grow on me. this is one of the few early films i lack, so i'll have to see which grading any dvd i grab uses when i do get my hands on it

Hopefully this newer HD remaster of Scooby-Doo meets the boo brothers will eventually find its way onto DVD i would love to watch the movie with this newer color pallet applied to it also I love that little gasp scooby makes when they turn around and notice that the ape was behind them while shaggy was reading the next clue That gasp was from the oringal series right I rember it being used a lot in that incarnation hopefully I'm remebering that correctly Anyways it's nice to here it again especially in this movie

To be honest, shows like Scooby Doo really need a more careful and specific approach than the broad strokes cleanup and and brightening that is applied to so many remasters. It has this unique blend of a darker, spookier atmosphere with generally bright, vibrant characters. While I can't deny that both look good... Both look good *in different ways* that cause neither to feel "definitive". Like, the Gorilla looks a lot more *like a gorilla* in the remasrer with the gray instrad of the dark blue, and Scooby looks more accurate to Scooby's more modern colors, and the backgrounds are significantly better, too. But the background lighting feel too bright at points despite the color looking better and showing more detail, and Shaggy's shirt is so red that it seems less defined. The skull's eyes are much more glow-y, making them overwhelming, while the brightening makes the "animated" parts of the "set" (y'know, the parts that move because they're drawn with much less detail) even more obvious in the remaster. And Scrappy just looks *off* because he faded from the Scooby series at large early on, long before the more modern colors and designs. Even then, I don't think Scrappy was often depicted with such a shade...if ever. As a result, neither version feels really "definitive".

By the way this film behaved, I'm guessing that this movie would have been rated PG if it was released in theaters. But in general, this movie is a classic masterpiece.

The 2022 master has far more accurate colors. The 1996 master is too dark and you actually lose color differences and detail.
