Welcome to the third and final part of the Scooby-Doo-a-Thon! This time we're looking at Scooby-Doo! Unmasked which was developed by Artificial Mind and Movement and released in 2005 for the PS2, Xbox and GameCube.
This game goes back to trying to convert the Scooby Doo series into a 3D collect-a-thon platformer, so the main question I have going into this is how does it compare to Night of 100 Frights? After-all this was made a few years after that game, so hopefully they were able to improve quite drastically on Scooby's first PS2 outing? But there's only one way to find out, let's take a look!

I don't really know or understand why Sony doesn't put Scooby Doo Unmasked for free for PS Plus Subscribers for PS4 and PS5 ps plus Premium, this game was such a classic back in those days and so much nostalgia as well, Sony are so dumb to not bring this game back for the old gen and new gen consoles, even if Sony added it to the PS4 and PS5 just for 1 month let's say, everyone would be so hyped up! 🙂💪🤣😉👍

They've really not been doing very well with providing more games on that service. They've hardly added any PS1 or 2 games since the new tiers appeared. Hopefully we'll see some massive updates for that in the future because we're missing so many classics! I suppose the issue with putting licensed games on there is that it can sometimes be a bit weird with who actually owns the game. Like Warner Bros own Scooby Doo as a property, but THQ published the game, but then THQ went bust and was brought back as THQ Nordic but might not actually have the rights to this particular game anymore. We did see the Toy Story 2 game get released on PS Plus though, so anything can happen!

Merry Christmas Rob. I'm a barber and in my shop this week I was talking about retro gaming to a client and I mentioned your channel. He said he's already subscribed!!! He enjoys your videos too. I just wanted to share that with you. What a great way for strangers to connect! Hope father Christmas brings you all the games on your wish list. I'm currently playing resident evil 1 on a PSone disk inside my ps3, and FEZ which I didn't even know was available for the ps3. I got it last week and I've played it every night after work before bed to calm down. Love it. Merry Christmas x

I've actually never gotten into FEZ even though I have tried a couple of times now! Merry Christmas! I hope you have a really good one! 🥳

I loved all 3 growing up. But one game that gets very little recognition (mostly due to its difficult to master controls) Is Classic Creep Capers on N64. It's a survival horror genre game similar to the Resident Evil and Silent Hill franchises. Tank controls (albeit rougher than most) and the main goal is finding clues and trap pieces to solve each mystery and catch the monster. Personally it's a gameplay style i deeply wish another Scooby Doo game would utilize. As it's probably the best way to do a Scooby Doo game aside from the similar structure of the point and click games Scooby has a plethora of. Maybe even try those out if you haven't already. ^^
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit Жыл бұрын
A few people have mentioned that to me, I have played the Game Boy Color version of that and I remember getting stuck really early on. Early 2000s PS platformers/games were pretty solid and regarded as a golden age by many for games like the entire Crash franchise, Battle for Bikini Bottom, Pacman World and my all time favorite game franchise; the Sly Cooper franchise. There's still many I likely hadn't played or heard of as well with such an expansive library. It's such a fascinating era of game development right the brink of it becoming a purely profit driven industry. Games just aren't often developed this way anymore or with this style/limitations unless it's indie or the very rare humble studio release. I'll always remember my youth fondly because of these games and the connections I made due to them.

I agree with you regarding the story and how unfocused it feels. I used to love this game as a kid although I was at first disappointed it wasn’t Mystery Mayhem like I wanted initially. But looking back now, I notice a lot of its flaws. Such as recycling monsters from the TV show as enemies and bosses (Except for the Guitar Ghoul) the most damming example is in Chinatown. The whole build up to Maggie Xi as being behind Zen Tuo was poorly done. All we know is that she disappears every time the dragon roars. But you know, there’s one other person you meet in Chinatown once and never see again, Ho Fong. All we hear from Daphne is that he left before she got captured. Where is he? In the original episode this world is based off of, he was behind Zen Tuo! Also, the idea of Maggie being a robot makes no sense as why would they put a robot in charge of the New Year’s parade?
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit Жыл бұрын
A lot of people seem to have a soft spot for Mystery Mayhem! I really liked it too but I figured most people would hate it because it wasn't a platformer. But yeah, the story of Unmasked could have probably been a lot better if they had put more effort into it. I literally didn't even notice that Ho Fong completely disappeared like that! There's a lot of strange plot holes here isn't there!

Night of 100 Frights is definitely the more popular game, it was the only one of this weird trilogy of games that I had previously briefly played back in the day. A major point about these reviews should be that these games were intended for children, not fully grown adults with over a decade of gaming experience.
@PixelPursuit
@PixelPursuit 5 ай бұрын
While that's absolutely true, I still think that games primarily aimed at children can be fun for anyone. I mean Mario games are aimed primarily at kids and everybody loves them. Plus, games aimed at children still need to have a degree of quality, even when I was a kid I could tell the difference between a good game and a bad game, so I still think reviewing stuff like this is somewhat interesting.

That's understandable for sure, Night of 100 Frights had a lot of great elements to it. Nowadays I actually tend to prefer shorter games so that probably would be a positive for me haha! Regardless of the flaws, how is that grounds for not calling the game a hidden gem. This is one of my favourite ps2 games of all time. All your complaints were more so ps2 generation game complaints, I really don’t think this was exclusive to unmasked. There’s so much to praise in this game. If you haven’t played it, it think it’s an essential ps2 game that everyone should experience. For what it is, the game is great.

It's probably slightly held back by the fact that it's based on Scooby Doo honestly. If it had been reworked into an original game it might have had a bigger audience because people would have probably seen that it's Scooby Doo and then passed on it because it's just another licensed game. Although, obviously on the other hand, having Scooby Doo attached to it probably gave it a bigger budget and would have attracted certain people to it in the first place, so it's a double edged sword! It probably is a bit of a hidden gem! Did I say that it wasn't? Haha, I don't even remember what I said specifically about it now!
