I always viewed What's New Scooby-Doo? as a direct continuation of the original Scooby-Doo, Where Are you? and I mean that in the best way possible. Both shows are very much a product of their times but by keeping to the classic formula for mysteries its really interesting seeing how much has both stayed the same & changed. Not just technology or slang but things like art style, character writing conventions, and even the voice acting direction from their respective decades are baked into each of these shows. So it was fun when Cartoon Network would play What's New or Scooby Doo-Where Are You? because it was like getting two different flavors of the same great show

This was definitely the Scooby Doo of my childhood. I saw "A Pup Named Scooby Doo", too, and I liked it it’s overall more comedic style, but I didn’t get to see as much due to only having access to Boomerang when I visited my grandparents. You could say "What’s New" appealed to me more through simple accessibility, but it had so much more to offer besides that - and I don’t just mean one of the best cartoon theme songs of all time. There’s a reason Simple Plan re-released it a few years back
@bland9876 Жыл бұрын
To this day still have no idea how you got access to Boomerang.
@noneofyourbuisness1679 Жыл бұрын
@@bland9876It was a separate channel, sort of the 'retirement home' for old shows that had run their course or had premiered before Cartoon Network was formed - you had all the classic Hanna Barbera shows, like Yogi Bear, the Flintstones, and the original Scooby Doo, but then later on in the evenings you'd get the original Pokemon anime, Teen Titans, Generator Rex, pretty much everything before the early 2010's. Then Cartoon Network got the shitty idea to chuck all that out the window and show only early seasons of their still running shows, with the occasionally older cartoon thrown in. Because why would you bother airing a different show on a different channel that you own? As for getting access to it, the most I can say is that it depends on your TV provider. To this day, my grandparents still have access to the channel and had changed providers at least twice, that I'm aware of (most of my memories are fuzzy due to early childhood not caring about specifics). I think dish satellite had it back in the early 2000's if you bought a certain package, but that's about all I can say.

The thing I remember was that for at least one season (might have been more) when it was on Kids WB, they wouldn't reveal the culprit of every episode at the end. Instead, you'd go online and pick who you thought it was. Then, at the beginning of the episode's time slot, before getting into the new plot, they'd reveal who did it from last time, and the first five or so correct answers would get their names on tv during commercials. It was a cool gimmick, and what made this iteration stand out to me, though I imagine it wouldn't really work on a rewatch.

Growing up with this version made it very special to me. Whereas mystery incorporated was like my getting edgy, teenage phase what's new was my kid series. And I'll be honest some of my favourite scares from the entire scooby doo franchise are from this series. Mystery incorporated could get freaky sure, and some of the films like zombie island and abracadabra doo (banshee scene) and that camp one (flashback where that guy turns into a fish) got downright scary, but this series actually had its own moments. I had a massive fear of clowns growing up (I am better with them now, but I blame it on that one clown scene from James Bond) so naturally the giant mechanical clown one was horrifying to me, and I would often avoid it. Also freaky were the fish monster one in Antarctica, as the power cut, isolated structures had a great atmosphere and the whole idea of the fish dragging you away slowly just to throw you into freezing cold water was downright horrifying (especially because the fish monster was really good in chases, like he felt like a monster you couldn't run away from unlike the others where it was like oh yeah hehe they can't catch me I'm too fast), the doll episode as I hated dolls, and still have a bit of a fear of them now, the AI controlled house due to that opening mirror scene and the room slowly filling up with water, and the civil war soldier episode, though I cannot really remember why it was freaky. This is actually getting me in the mood to rewatch these episodes

This was the one I grew up with, it's still my favorite. I know the characters and stories are deeper in some other iterations but this one always had my favorite art style. I like the characters have semi realistic proportions while still being clearly animated, like the original series compared to the exaggerated body shapes of some other iterations. The theme song is also really stuck in my head and still remains the best one I've heard for the series. I get that the show is simple like the original and that can be repetitive but I guess the repetitive nature of Scooby Doo never really bothered me since I didn't have cable and only had like one of the DVD movies (the Australian vampire one). Main way I saw the show was when I was at other people's houses so I never saw the entire series

I loved this show, it was my introduction to the Scooby Doo franchise and I've been a fan ever since! I love Mystery Incorporated more, but I don't think I would appreciated that drastic and more serious take on the franchise had I not seen the classic Scooby Doo first. What's new let me appreciate the status quo.
