The Modi Government has set the ball rolling for restoring One Nation One Election in India. The Union Cabinet has accepted the Kovind Report, which was submitted to President Droupadi Murmu in March.
But the real challenge begins now.
If all the stakeholders - which includes political parties and the states - are to be brought on board, it will need two big Constitutional amendments to be cleared by Parliament.
Plus, ratification will be required from at least 50 percent of the states for creating a unified electoral roll.
A tall order at any time, but more so now as Prime Minister Modi heads a coalition government. For instance one of his key allies, the TDP, did not even give its opinion to the Kovind panel.
Forty-seven political parties gave their opinion to the Kovind panel - 32 supported the idea of simultaneous polls and 15 opposed it.
