Scotty you’re pretty much spot on. I’ve tuned CV40’s for years. 48 pilot and a 185 main with the 1988 needle is usually the go to for a 80 cu inch. 3 turns out on the air screw will get ya close. Always replace the junk plastic inlet.

This is a good video. I have a CV Performance Velocity needle in my carb. It's about the same price as the 88 Sportster needle, but it is machined to not need a shim. I run a 46 pilot and a 185 main with a CV Performance slide spring, which is a little quicker opening. This is on my 06 XL 1200. The 04-06 Sportsters came with Buel XB style heads and the W camshafts, so they are a little thirstier than the engines in the solid mount bikes from 03 and earlier. It wil haul ass but will still get 48 to 52 MPG, depending on if I am on the Interstate or a 55 to 60 mph road. I got rid of the sucky vacuum petcock and put a Pingle style petcock and a washable Russel stainless steel fuel filter, and have had very good service. These CV's are sort of picky about float levels, so do what Harley says do when setting the float level and you will be a happy camper. Piss on EFI !!

Great video Scotty! First time I’ve had someone explain the basics of exactly how a carburetor works. I’ve worked on a lot of carburetors and changed lots of jets. I never really had full understanding exactly how all the parts interacted with each other until now. Thanks for passing on your knowledge!

The wealth of KZbin is sharing this kind of experience. Been running carbs for 45 years. For pilot fine tune. After gentle cruising for 10 minutes at 55 the header pipes are stupid hot and the cam cover is hotter than a fresh made coffee it's maybe ⅒th turn too far in/lean from optimal, 2 up cruising at 70 if it's stupid hot the needle needs raising or changing. Decel popping with everything else just right is probably because the idle is too low. The butterfly closes and the vacuum pulls too hard on the idle circuit, just try raising the idle a bit at a time till it's minimal or zero over run popping, it'll save on brake wear to be able to adjust the bikes speed using just the throttle and gears. On my 3rd Harley since 1988. I had an '88 sportster 4 speed chain drive, a '95 FXDL Evo and now a '99 TC88 FXDL with fueling 525 and Vance and Hines straight shots. Using 99 fuel runs a 45 pilot at 2 ⅓ and idle at 1000. Do all my own work. You should be able to annoy a spit from cold or a backfire from high rev throttle off maybe but this is about real world drivable with perfect manners when driving miss daisy to spirited performance testing. We are lucky in the UK to have 99 fuel at not much more than E10, those days may be numbered.

This is the exact setup I run on mine and I've never ridden an injected bike that runs better all around. The EV27 is the cam to run for touring also. Good explanation for those still running a CV.

You are so correct about these carbs just jet it and maybe shim the needle turn the screw 2 1/2 to 3 turns out from stop and go ride, 48 pilot, 180 main is just right, don’t drill the slide or cut the spring,just ride, great video, I’m a retired Harley mechanic and there’s information about what happens when you drill the slide and or cut the spring don’t do it,thanks for the video

I learned to do these carbs a long time ago when I bought my 2004 sportster and have done all of my own work on this bike including a hammer 1275, cams, and everything in between. Only thing I have a shop do is change my tires. All of us on the XL Forum change out those crappy screws on the bowl and on the top to stainless allens. So much better. I know there’s probably not too many women subscribers on here who do their own wrenching but wanted to let you know there’s at least one. Merry Christmas 🎄 my friend. I solved one major problem today, (at least I think I did) which was an air leak at the carb to manifold joint. I used a quality automotive hose clamp and now I can tighten it by accessing it from the side opposite the carb, with a long 5/16" wrench. Made a big difference, but there's more. I believe I will re-jet. I have a 45 pilot and a 180 main on a 1200 Sportster. I removed the plug at the idle mixture screw and found out it was completely screwed in, nothing out at all, so I turned it out 2 turns. I'm thinking about a 48 or 50 pilot and a 185 or 190 main. Now for an update. I tried all sorts of jet combinations and the bike kept running progressively worse. Bad VOES. If you have a bad VOES switch, the bike can run like crap and nothing you do will fix the problem except a new VOES switch.

Excellent class, dude !! I don't use those CV carbs, but many moons ago, it was the bendix. My present scoot is fuel injected due to curiosity. You just did a good job with educating some of the guys out here.

Just picked up a used 96 Road King with only 17,000 miles. This is one of the best videos I've seen to make this (New to me) bike run like a top as it's been sitting with bad gas for a year and a half. Wish I could have donated more brother. Thanks.

@@scootertrampscotty For crying out loud! Ironically, your "main jet", cleaning at the gas station video ALSO got me going again. After a good trip to Sturgis this year, I was heading back out on another two state meet up with a friend. Bike died twice, but would fire again in a few minutes. Pulled the bottom bowl and there was something logged in the main. (Bowl was spotless) It was tiny but still restricting. Blew it out made the trip and it's been fine ever since. Hope to meet you in person some day.

I think, at least for the Electra Glide Classic, the CV carb was introduced in 1989. I have a 1988 but I have the receipts for an upgrade to a CV. When I took it from Wisconsin to Sea level Texas I did need to rejet it. Easy to rejet. Don't even need to take the carb off the bike, just drop the float bowl.

I have the CV carb on my '89 Sportster. I modified back in 1990. Still a fine carburetor. I did that brass fuel inlet also. That plastic one broke and actually started a fire.

@@ClovisPoint Yeah, A very small crack in that plastic fitting can turn into a big crack and leak very fast. My bike is an '89 . So it was good for over 25 years, but all these Evos are old now, so I'd definitely put the brass fitting in. On a brand new carb, I'd just leave the plastic one in.

Really good video Scotty My Harleys are injected but my wife’s 2001 Suzuki with 4 carburetors that sat for a couple years and now it’s missing on one cylinder. Any ideas for an easy fix? It ran good when I parked it?

Id try running c-foam or some other carb cleaner through it for a while. Her carbs, like pretty much all of em, probably have a screw on the bottom of the bowls that drains them when opened. Just crank em open when it sits and leave them that way till she rides ot again.

I've been searching high and low for an explanation of why my bike runs the way it does and so far this video has shed a little light on it. I have an 03 ultra classic and it does the normal cough and spit when cold,but the longer i ride and the more it heat soaks the higher it idles. Sometimes it diesels when i shut it off. I bought it running this way. It has a k&n filter and kerker slip ons. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

On a 1991 XLH 1200, the bike came to me with a 45 pilot, and what I think to be a 175 main. Should I go up to a 48 pilot, and a 180 main? 185 main? the needle on that bike also looks to be a bit wide, and the clips are in the middle position which holds it up just a bit. I'm not quite sure if thats how i'd want it here in maryland, not really high above sea level.

And this lady say's to put a drop of castor oil on your eye lids at night before bed. And lightly rub it in. Give it a try it might help Even investigate the healing power of it.

George Smith (S&S) was good at hopping up Harleys in the 50s but he needed a carb that would give his motors more gas. So he went to a farmer friend and they took an old tractor carb, which was upswep, and designed the same thing that would flow through. An accelerator pump was later added. Very simple. I once took a tour of the S&S plant in Wisconsin and learned that there.

I have a L series S+S carb #314 without a accelerater pump on my 50 panhead and a S+S super B without a pump on my 93 inch shovel head and on my 95 road king I have over 200 k and it has S+S super E. Makuni sponsored me one of those once but their tuning directions didnt work. I couldnt get it right till a friend with a speed shop told me what to do. Those carbs only run well a little on the lean side. He had me use a #20 pilot. Kept the main jet that came on it (i forget the number) but Dale had me drop the needle one notch. The idle screw controls air not gas. He had me turn it in till the motor started to slow then back it only till it it came to normal speed. As for the squrter, use the smallest one. Dales directions worked really well!

I’m running a 1200 sportster with the Arlen ness stage 1 air cleaner, thunderheader, screaming eagle ignition module and andrews n4 cams. I dont know Sportsters. My bikes almost always end up with a #48 pilot, #180 main, and idle screw 2 and 1/2 turns out. The slide, spring, and everything else stays bone stock.

I personally have never had one rip but u should be able to see a whole in it. U can also run it, rev the motor up and down, and watch if the slide seems to be moving smoothly.

Stock 96 evo, what would be a good model number? I'm interested in function over form, less maintenance, better gas mileage etc. Looking for a good model number and jet size for best mileage and longevity.

That bike comes with a #42 pilot, #160 main, and the idle screw 1/2 turns out. Probably the best milage youre gonna get. But for smog reasons they all came a bit lean from the factory. If it runs fine id leave it alone. But if its to hot, takes for ever to warm up or coughs a lot on warm up id probably turn the idle screw to 1 and 1/2 or 2 turns out, go with a #45 pilot, which is the next size up, and maybe a #175 main. If u have an aftermarket air filter, pipes, and a cam they generally get a #48 pilot, #180 main, and idle screw at 2 and 1/2 turns (mine always do). Less if u live in the altitude.

Hello Scotty need your advice I changed my camshaft on my evo big twin FLSTN 1993 from Stock to Andrew’s ev13 I replaced intake manifold seals and they are tested and good. My problem is the following, I have a slow jet of 40 but looks bigger than a 42 which is the one I normally use “I live at 2.600 meters above sea” I adjust the mixture screw counter clockwise 1 1/2 turns but the rpm goes down a little “not optimal mixture? “ I close the screw all the way and the idle speeds up “better mixture?” but here is the catch the throttle response sucks bike spits up and tries to die when applying throttle, when I unscrew and put 1 and 3/4 turns the idle goes a little down but the throttle response is way better can you tell me why is this ? Do I need bigger or smaller jet ? Is it because the size 40 jet perhaps is faulty fuel hole bigger than it should compared to the side holes ?

Dont know how high 2600 meeters is because i think in terms of feet. But that motor generally comes from the factory with a #42 pilot, #160 main, and the screw 1/2 turns out. Your problem really sounds like the pilot jet. Next up from 42 is a 45, then 46 and 48 - which is what mine always end up with.

Ive had this same problem MANY times. On the older bikes yes, outer and inner primary. Newer bikes no. The thing will only break again though. Its only pot-metal. I always install an aftermarket steel shift arm, red locktight, then tack wield the arm to the shaft. Its not an integral/important shaft to the transmission. This is the only way ive found to keep it from happening again.
