Wow. I used the 1n5408 to rebuild two amps' rectifiers from memory... I figured overspec was just fine given they cost absolutely nothing. In fact I don't think you even need to do the 3-a-side thing, you can get away with fewer depending on ratings or at least that's what I have read. The issue I found in one amp was the larger diodes have much fatter leads Seriously though why don't people stock diodes and replace the lot properly, I got a hundred for the price of a coffee

If I may I ask - for the grid stoppers, did you stick with 1/2w like it says on the schematic or did you bump them up to 1w resistors?
