There's no "guess" about it, it's pretty undisputable. There's way too many people living there (and in the Desert Southwest in general) and the amount of water they consume is far more than the capacity of the area can handle. Entire aquifers have been drained, and the water table is dropping more and more every year. You can go lots of places and see what used to be raging rivers where the water level has dropped really far in just a matter of decades. Some of them have dried up completely. The only reason places like Arizona or Nevada don't have a huge forest fire problem like California is because they don't have a whole lot of forested areas to begin with. With not much regulations on pumping or water usage, this problem looks to continue to get worse and worse. The current state of drought looks like it will be the new normal rather than something that will pass. The future could be very bad for that region.
