It was a publicity stunt. Scopes wasn't even sure if he even taught evolution in his class. But he agreed to accept the charges so that a trail could take place. Bryan and Darrow were big name lawyers. In the movie, they have Bryan dying in the courtroom but of course he didn't die until 5 days after the trial. Fredrick March who was born in my home town of Racine, WI played Bryan. They made him bald to look like Bryan. They did a good job of that. But the movie "Inherit the Wind" left out or added a lot of things that never came up at the trial.

@MelancoliaI 2 жыл бұрын
Well yeah, Inherit the Wind was a drama that changed the names and location, magnifying the characters into archetypes in a battle for free thought. It blew up the trial into an epic confrontation, staying neutral into the very end. The end is interesting, because it seems to me the authors of the play had an ax to grind with H.L. Mencken, the infamous Sage of Baltimore, for his unrelenting, ever-sneering cynicism, presenting him as a nihilist taking up the cause of the underdog simply because it was the less popular choice.

I would agree that this was the trial of the century. The modernists wanted to take God Out of public life and have a materialistic world. Because Protestantism has no real intellectual basis Bryan was not able to combat the attacks effectively. So eventually the way it was set for a secular atheism and subjectivism which is seeing its ultimate fruit today

Apparently, the fear of the Evolution Theory was(to some) based on the possibility that some(white) people would apply it to social situations, and use it to argue that people of ethnicity other than their own were of a lesser stage in evolution, saying that they were superior in that sense.

Yeah it was a publicity stunt to generate money. But psalm there's a difference between Saying evolution can can cause minor changes within a species vs saying evolution can change a species into an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT species. A Pigeon and a Blue Jay are 2 different types of birds, but they're still BIRDS. They didn't go from a bird into being a cat. There's very little factual evidence for species transformation unless I'm missing something.

basically science vs Fundamentalism during those times, "In 1925, a teacher in Tennessee named John T. Scopes taught his students about evolution. Earlier that year, the state had passed a law making it illegal to teach evolution in schools. Scopes was arrested for breaking the new state law. The Scopes Trial came to be seen as religion versus science. Large crowds traveled to Tennessee to see the trial. About 1,000 people were in the courtroom on the first day of the hearing. The climax of the drama happened near the end of the trial. Scopes’ lawyer Clarence Darrow called an unexpected witness. He asked William Jennings Bryan to testify. Bryan was the state’s lead lawyer on the case. Bryan claimed to be an expert on the Bible. Darrow led him through a series of questions that challenged the belief that people should live their lives according to the Bible. By the end of his testimony, Bryan testified that stories in the Bible could not always be taken literally. However, the judge ruled that Bryan’s statements should be removed from the record of the trial. He said that they did not provide any evidence. The jury found Scopes guilty. He had to pay $100" then scopes appealed again and found not guilty with batch of lawyers and science fact checkers argued over such law & religious fundamentalism of the times.. (quote taken from school lesson we had right now in history online class 1920s)
