K40 Whisperer was the deciding factor in buying my K40 (the fact that Inkscape would be the main working environment for my laser means I get to work in a very familiar environment; I love Inkscape) . Brilliant, simply brilliant! I do a lot of my own cad, I cut/engrave exclusively on my K40 now with Whisperer. Has all the features I need to perform the work that I process through high end cad programs, then through Inkscape or other vector capable program to set penwidths/colors or whatever. I'm a mechanical engineer and I do quite a bit of python coding... the capabilities of Whisperer as open source is impressive. Nice to see it progressing as well, keep up the great work!

I wanted to drop a big "THANK YOU" for all your hard work here. I took one look at the LaserDRW and assorted other software on the K40 disk, and decided to skip it and wait for a replacement board. When I found this, I was able to get my K40 engraving without having to worry about buggy software, translating stuff from Chinese, etc. Great work here, you deserve some real Kudos.

I have two suggestions to make it even better: 1. add a 4th color for engraving (vector and/or raster)with a different laser power. 2. if you click the buttons for the corners it should go to the corner of the actual loaded image and not of the lasertable then you could test out if you wood lays on the right place better.

K40-Whisperer v0.17 works great with Linux Ubuntu Mate 16.04.My K40 is very easier to use after watching this. Within 5 minutes of watching this video I went from not controlling my cutter with K40-Whisperer to my first vector engrave. Most of that time was spent editing my .svg in inkscape. K40-Whisperer has excellent installation readme.txt. Some errors did occur but resolved with the message in the error text.

Seems very awesome. Would like to test it out however I have a question for you. I have been having issues using inkscape with the G-code turnkey extension to generate the g-code for the K-40. (Not directly connected). Using this extension, the shape is not precisely the same as the drawing. I think there is too much smoothing going on when it generates the g-code. So I am playing with LaserDrw to generate the g-code. Seems to have a lot more resolution plus, it allows me to cut on either side of the path or down the middle. For my work, this is IMPORTANT. Cutting out precise puzzle pieces is difficult of I cut on the wrong side of the path. So, how does Whisperer deal with this? Thank-you!

K40 Whisperer is probably more similar to the Turnkey extension than LaserDRW. I don't know how to answer better than that. You could also try my LaserDRW Extension for Inkscape if you want to make designs Inkscape and cut them with LaserDRW

Yes, I use a USB cable just like GRBL. ;) I honestly don't know anything about the inner workings of GRBL but I don't think there are many similarities. It is not G-Code

Yes GRBL is a GCode interpreter, and that interesting the laser isn't taking GCode. Did you figure it out by sniffing the serial bus? As if you got this worked out, you have the basis for a killer commercial product and don't worry I am not trying to hone in as I know what a pain it is to put a product out and not looking for that but would protect the IP if I were you even it is just filing a formal copyright to establish it as prior art in your favor so if someone lifts it, it has been formally documented...

You may have a hard time getting a Copyright (or a Patent) on a protocol someone else made that you reverse engineered. Technically, according to the DCMA reverse engineering is illegal, however I believe there is a carve out for hobbyists or researchers. So, I think you might have a tough time with the VC crowd. Also, as you can see, he's released his software under the GPL license, which instead of using legal tactics to block others, he is using it to liberate others from vendor lock in. Some people get satisfactions from things other than money, like contributing back to the open source community and helping others. So, instead of encouraging him to hoard his software, let's thank him for sharing the details of his work under a liberal open-source license so others can freely learn and benefit from it.

It is plywood from Home Depot. It is about .20" thick and it has a soft core that I assume the core is balsa.

If it only moves the wrong direction when homing it is probably an electrical problem with the end stop sensors.

Awesome work! So, the laser is always at a constant power and you just vary the speed of travel? Is this the same as the software that comes with the machine?

To get greys the image is broken down into small dots like pictures in the newspaper (called dither or halftone). So the speed is constant the laser just turns on and off as required. The software that comes with the machine will not convert the image to dots for you but it will engrave an image you have prepared. Using the default software it is difficult to get the scale right and it is also difficult to do a project with more than one operation (i.e. engrave, raster engrave and cut)

i have just unpacked my laser and while looking for instructions on the supplied software i found your program. It seems much easier to use esp since I have limited use of Inkscape already. My question is I have yet to power up the laser, is there any reason to install the supplied usb to the machine, or can I just use whisperer on the pc plugged into the laser engraver?

+C Martin if you plug the machine into you computer the default driver should auto install. The you follow the install directions on the K40 Whisperer site. If the default driver does not auto install you may need to install the driver manualy so you can then follow the K40 Whisperer driver directions as written.

Thank you so much for your Video, Until I seen your video my K40 was pretty much dead :-) and I have made some really neat things since watching your video, ?BUT" for some reason I have to click on the Raster cut 2 or 3 times some times before it will finally initiate and start the project ?? My only guess is that you are using the 'Stop' button and K49 Whisperer is not reseting properly. There is a problem withe the 'Stop' button that I have not figured out/fixed yet.

Good Morning, I do have another question for you :-) How can you tell if your Laser Tube went out ?? mine just stopped, and when I try to test it, no Laser at all ?? it was right in the middle of a small job and it stopped the Laser, can you point me in the right direction to check it ?? Got a good question. I'm new to these lasers and software. How did you know what power to make a vector or rasp deeper? Like your thing you made, the river is engraved deeper. What is the max thickness these lasers can make a cut out from? Thanks

You have to do some experimenting with the material you are using to detetmine the best power settings. In a single pass you can cut through .2" material if it is not very dense. (different materials will give very different results.)

I'm getting ready to install the software but the installation instructions have be a bit puzzled. If you connect the laser cutter, as directed, to the PC before you load the driver then windows will try to install some driver as soon as it sees the printer. Isn't this going to create a problem? I'd expected to load the proper driver into the OS first, THEN connecting the cutter.

Is it possible to change the colors for the engraving and cutting? Having an issue with changing the colors from black to red due to fine lines.

No you can't. You can make the lines thicker. K40 Whisperer does not care about line thickness.

Made my first attempt at using my K40/Inkscape/K40 Whisperer last night. When I tried to initialize I got an error at the footer saying that the USB driver was not installed...is there a separate driver that I need to download? Also got the "Inkscape not found" error.

Hello Your program seems super useful and I'm dying to try it. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I've been unable to install it on 3 computers, I get an error log that says this at the end: "This probably means that tcl wasn't installed properly" I did install the windows redistributable package, do I need to install anything else? I definitely works with Windows 10. Make sure you installed the driver. You need to tell it to install the driver during the install (assuming you are using the installer.).

Does anyone know what the BLACK color I should use in the corel in a vector to be engraved and when exporting the SVG file and importing it into Whisperer for sure ..... I only succeeded with the BLUE and RED colors .... The color BLACK only works when exporting by INKSCAPE ....

It should work with DXF files from Corel. The line thickness does not matter. You can try opening files with K40 Whisperer without a laser. You don't even need to install a driver either if you just want to open files to see how things will import. You can even click the buttons to send the data. The data will be processed but nothing will be sent to the USB if no driver is installed.

Make sure yoy are using the latest Inkscape 0.92. If you are using files made with an older Inkscape (or other application) you might need to go can go into: "File"-"Document Properties" then change the "Scale x:" value by some small amount then change it back and save the document. You only need to do this once for a document. This process will force the SVG file to have a 'viewbox' attribute which defines the scale.

Seems like my K40 Whisperer interprets every color including Red and Blue as black. So when I export a red letter in Inkscape to it shows as black in the K40 Whisperer? Any idea why?

For text you need to convert the text to paths before saving the SVG file. You do this by selecting the text then select "Path"-"Object to Path" in the Inkscape menu bar. K40 Whisperer will be able to do the text conversion automatically in the future but that feature is not included yet.

Thank you! That worked! What I did was I wrote the text, Object to path, No fill, Solid fill in stroke, painted the stroke red, made the stroke 0.1mm wide and Voila! Is there a way for me to easily get the program to vector cut a red circle coming from a .png image online?

+Hampus Lundin Inkscape has the ability to trace images which will convert the image to vectors. To do this you use the "Path"-"Trace Bitmap" option in the menu bar. The vectors that are created will always be the outlines of the input image. After you do this the vector will be on top of the image. You probably will want to delete the image before continuing otherwise you will get both items in the output.

Trial and error. The settings will vary alot depending on whether of not you have air assist.

Sir, I got everything working last night I even cut a 40x40 cube just to check the accuracy and it came out great. This morning I tried cutting a different file and the scale came out wrong. Then I uploaded the same from last night (40x40 file) and the scale in the whispere is wrong. I don't know what's going on. Please help.

How mow was the scale off. (approximately). Was it off by 10% more than double (2x) or like 25x.

Ok. I don't know what's going on. Dxf and svg file is not working for me in inkscape but when I changed it to wmf everything is working fine. The scale and is perfect.

Thanks for the VERY quick response. I finally had success by downloading the CH341A driver and manually installing it. THEN I had Zadig replace it with the libUSB files. Tried my first cut and evidently I'm going to need to do some aligning. It only burned consistently in the home area.

Scorch Works The only thing I can think of that may have complicated the issue is that I had previously installed drivers for the CH340 chip for an Arduino Uno clone. I did try removing them after my first difficulty, but it didn’t help. I found the drivers through another KZbin video about an EEPROM programmer.

Does it work with MS10105 v4.7 board? Original software is Moshidraw.

No, it will only work with boards that work with LaserDRW. I does not work with Moshi boards.

Make sure you have a controller board that is compatible with K40 Whisperer. Also make sure the controller board isbgetting power.

@@ScorchWorks yup, i just checked i have voltage on the controller, when i plug it to the PC it recognize it and the driver shows up on the manager, when i initialize the laser, doesn't work and when i try to move it, it shows me an error "Rapid move failed: there are many dsta transmission errors (10)". Send a sample file with the problem to the e-mail address in the help menu. Then I can see what is going on.

In K40 whisperer there is no raster engraving (black) capability with DXF files. You can only do vector cut or vector engrave. The default is to do vector cut. If a line in the DXF file is blue it will be set to vector engrave otherwise it remains the default (red - vector cut).

+Axel Monell No, DXF is all vectors and I have no plan to change that as of right now. You can import the DXF into Inkscape then save as SVG to get the black lines raster engraved.

Are you saying your anti-virus software is turned off? Sometimes anti-virus software decides that everything made with Py2exe is a virus. If you already have your anti-virus off it shouldn't be complaining.

I got everything I can find off. Firewall, PC matic, defender. This computer is w10. I downloaded it on another computer with W7 OK. But still can't get it to find my laser. There are drivers for windows XP through Windows 10. No it does not work with the Cohesion3D board. K40 Whisperer is only for stock controller boards that works with LaserDRW (i.e. M2 Nano, etc)

I know the filter driver option (step 7b) does not work for me on some windows version. The replace driver option (step 7a) does work on windows XP, Vista and 10 (Vista and 10 both 64 bit). You might want to search for Zadig help. (Google or the Zadig site)

You can try the winXP version of the installer or you can try installing with the libUSB available here: sourceforge.net/projects/libusb-win32/ I have heard both if these options work for people. O just use the 7a method.

Hey, I've made everything as required and started it once. Made few project and everything worked great. Unfortunetly next day got "USB Error: "path" " and can do nothing... Anyone had similar problem? Any idea how to fix it? Made reinstalation, tried different usb slots. Nothing help... It is detected correctly as device by system and all drivers are instaled as well... Please help! This is really awsome soft!

Sounds like you need to select "Home in Upper Right" in the "General Settings". This setting is for machines that have the home position in the upper right corner (not in the upper left corner)

I followed the instructions on the site to load the usb lib for the filter and get no backend usb. Tried rebooting, laser on / off. Any ideas ?

I am pretty sure the driver is not installed correctly for some reason. If you used the filter driver option you might need to have the Laser USB cord plugged into the same port as when you installed the filter driver (I think I read than somewhere but I have not tested it.)
