Recently I had a near death experience that broke me like I've never felt broken before. Everyone is "happier" when they're naive, before their eyes are open to how awful things have actually been. Fear is not always a bad thing. It's a very useful kind of wisdom. We learn to fear things that harm us, that's part of maturity. There's no benefit in going back to a naive state, as much as we daydream it might be wonderful. The "real you" is not only the things that feel good in the moment. All of your fear and anger, pain and sadness is also very much the real you! Use the knowledge and wisdom you gained, don't get attached to the hypnotic idea of a fantasy state of not having reasonable fear that keeps you safe.

I think theres a lot of misinformation about couples therapy but there is a lot of individual work that goes into it. If you have the right therapist they will work on your individual thoughts feelings and behaviors and help you navigate those while also working towards the difficulties you may be facing in union and why your individual difficulties and needs aren’t being met as a couple. Another option is for you to separately get a therapist and have a couples therapist as an extra but that’s a lot of money. Obviously you will do what works best for you but it’s a lot easier to catch things you can’t see and understand both yourself and the other person when there is someone there to help who is neutral and can simply listen and gain perspective from both sides while showing you how your own patters of behavior may be affecting the relationship so that you can work on them.

Stop the cycle. Give up. You can have hope again when someone proves they're worth it. Stop giving them your precious optimism when they don't deserve it. Society puts a lot of pressure on us to act like we believe people and our feelings don't matter if they let us down. Try stopping the act. Ask hard questions and hold people accountable, politely, but don't just smile and believe what they tell you. If it puts them off, they probably wanted to get away with more BS with zero consequences. Most people do!
