Watched this again this Christmas. My go-too Skirlie tutorial. Just as amusing this time as it was last year. Well done! I must say it's one heck of a lot easier than making Mealy pudding. For that I need some intestines to use as storage for the oatmeal while it is boiled. Don't know what Tesco's would say if I asked for some intestines. Would probably have to ask Granny if I could borrow hers ....

I’ve cooked Skirlie a few times and my first few efforts seemed a bit dry. A method that seems to work well is to gradually add small amounts of beef stock as though you are cooking a Risotto; Scottish risotto! This gives it a delicious smooth texture.

I am an American and I am so confused 😂 is this a main dish, or a side dish, appetizer, what? It sounds so strange to just eat toasted oats with butter and onions, but I’m just a Yankee scoundrel, so what do I know.

Usually a side dish, can roll into balls and have as stuffing with chicken and gravy.

He’s speaking Scots. It’s not a “pseudo Scottish accent”. If you don’t like or understand it, go watch a cookery video in English, there’s plenty of them.

@@elizabethsykes4243 of course he’s Scottish. They’re probably auto captions which is just what the computer thinks he is saying. And the computer isn’t very good at listening to non American or RP English. Scots is a language which split off from Middle English. A lot of it is mutually intelligible with English but many Scandinavian languages are also mutually intelligible to certain degrees.
