For the bottom, use cork matting. Much nicer finish, waterproof, easier to cut and bond to the label

This is really cool looking. I have been looking for vinyl projects because I inherited hundreds (literally) of vinyl records and 80% of them are undesirable (1001 Strings, anyone?). We want to create a fun bar/rec/music room in the basement and these will make a great addition!! Thanks for posting the fails too, now we know what to expect!

I found that using a lower speed and lighter pressure with the hole saw works the best even if it takes longer. Coming in at a slight angle with the hole saw like the video says helps too. If you don't have a lot of these to do, you can also use a hand file to get rid of the burs and remaining pieces from the edges.

Got any recommendations for a better spray than modge podge? As I’m sure you’ve discovered even after multiple layers of modge podge the coaster sticks to a hot mug. Needs some kind of clear heat resistant spray.

Did you recycle the excess as it can be uesd to make new pressings

Maybe try a concrete bit? I think the saw would have less bite. Or just run the saw the opposite direction
@ScotHacker6 жыл бұрын
Oooh, I like the idea of running the saw in the reverse direction - I'll try that next time I make these, thanks.
@daverulz39156 жыл бұрын
I'd imagine it would have the same effect as cutting formica countertop or wood panel. Less ripping of the material.

How does your sealant perform with a hot mug/glass? Can you recommend a heat resistant sealant?
@emmawilson8449 Жыл бұрын
I've used ModPodge for these (not the spray kind) and it doesn't react well to a hot mug. Would love a good heat resistant sealant.

Good video, when cutting the label out with the hole saw, would it be better to use a slower speed and a lighter touch to avoid damaging it? Thank you! 👍👍👍
@ScotHacker2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. It's been a while since I made these, but I remember finding that the key was to make contact at a slight angle to avoid breakage. If you do experiments, let us know what you find!

@@ScotHacker If I discover something new, I'll post something here. Think that I'll try a some practice cuts on some junk records before I cut the good ones. I have a very special label that I don't want to make a mistake on.

@@audiophileman7047When cutting with the hole saw it's best to go at the slight angle so it doesn't shock the record, however you want the drill to be going really fast so the drill wont seize up. 👍 although it's been 9mo figured I'd pitch in

The coasters look great! Is there a reason why you cut a hole in the felt below the spindle hole? I’d think adding the hole would allow water/condensation to get through and reach the table?
@ScotHacker5 жыл бұрын
Mostly because if you can't see through the hole, it doesn't look a hole. And because you don't want crumbs and dust getting caught in the little indentation that would create.

I guess the labels go bad if there is moisture in the air and drips off the glass
@ScotHacker3 жыл бұрын
That's why it's so important to spray on the sealant - to protect the labels! I only put a couple of coats on in this video - in retrospect, should have done more, as it eventually wore off and some of the labels got damaged.
