Love this video and the country. So far since 1998 I have been there 14 times and spent about 17 weeks total. One story stands out which took place on my first trip. I was near Ayr on the west coast of Scotland when my tire blew out. So I nursed my car down the road to a farmer's driveway since the shoulder was too small. I thought the right thing to do was to ask the owner if I could park there to change the tire. He of course said yes. By the time I started to get the tire out of the car the farmer came out with his yellow rain coat on and told me to go inside and his wife will serve me some coffee or tea. Of course I tried to argue but I lost in the end. In no time a new tire was on my car and I was off. A year later I was back in Scotland and I made sure that I stopped at his house, even though it was long out of my way. I brought him two framed 8×10 photographs of the Oregon coast where I lived. Both him and his wife couldn't believe I would do that for them. I told them it wasn't a gift to say thank you, but a gift of friendship. We wrote to each other over the years. The farmer died in 2014. I will always remember this very random act of kindness. I have had nothing but warm hospitality from almost everyone I have met there.

Here is something that shocked us in Scotland. We were in a small shop in Dunoon to purchase some items and wanted to pay with a credit card. The proprietor gave us the merchandise and the receipt and asked us to go down the street three or four doors to pay at another store. When my husband expressed surprise that she would trust us to do that, she said, "People are generally honest. In the years that we have been doing this, only one person has not paid." This may not be typically Scottish, more likely small-town business, but we were touched by the warmth, trust, friendliness, and kindness of Scots wherever we were in Scotland.

@@indiekiddrugpatrol3117 Its a different type of crime. We have people growing up in a place where they regularly saw people being skinned alive and murdered right in front of them(Somalia, Rwanda etc), come over as kids then grow up and realise how soft everything is in UK. And they are afraid of nothing, there is nothing can be done to them that compares to what they already seen, so extreme violence is in the nurture, even 2nd and 3rd generation. And there is no cultural integration. It is many cultures that maintain their differences and barriers, no single integrated culture, and that is the root of the "migration problem". Its a serious problem and is yet to fully come to a head. There is a fight-back with brexit etc but too little too late.

Thank you for your lovely rant about Scotland. I'm a Scottish lady, originally from Edinburgh but now living in Hampshire, England with my English husband. I agree how beautiful Scotland is. I don't think one appreciates it until you no longer live there. I'm now 78 years of age and disabled so I'm no longer able to visit my home town. I hope you visit there again with your lovely family. If you do, try to drive to a little village in Angus, it's called Edzell, where my father's family originate from. My Great Grandfather was the local Shoemaker, his name was Thomas Broom, and in a small Museum just outside Edzell, a photo of his shop is in one of the large books created by the children of the Glens many years ago. The museum is called The Retreat and was originally a hunting lodge. It's in the middle of nowhere, just beautiful surroundings. There is an old fashioned tea room with homemade scones and cakes. Source it online. Thank you again for taking me home again with all your lovely photos and memories. Beth x

Connor The thom I am not denying that there isn’t a problem, in fact I happened to live in the area in Edinburgh which had drug problems but I was never bothered. The thing is no big cities are untouched with this thing but bigger picture as a whole I found the city welcoming, beautiful and very organised.

In October you might be lucky and get a late summer or unlucky and get an early winter - but most likely it will be a mixture of both. Bring lots of layers that you can put on or take off according the, often rapidly changing, weather. I would suggest that you have at least one genuine water and wind proof outer layer garment. Remember the old saying; there is no such thing as unsuitable weather - there is only unsuitable clothing! Welcome to our little country. i hope you enjoy your visit.

Great video, Mark and your excitement about places is always infectious. Here are a dozen extra "shocks" we have experienced about Scotland: 1. Glasgow was nicer than we thought it would be. 2. The Isle of Skye and Edinburgh both live up to the hype. 3. That goes for Scotland in general. 4. Jimmy Page once owned an estate on Loch Ness. 5. Rabbie's Tours is excellent. 6. The Dumfries House in Cumnock is exceptional. 7. The train ride to the northern tip of Scotland is epic. 8. The southwestern part of Scotland including Dumfries and Caerlaverock Castle nearby is worth a vacation all it's own. 9. Scotland doesn't have much wildlife (outside of Nessie) to speak of - used to be bears but no more, just occasional deer. I have Scottish cousins who different times have exclaimed, "Oh, look, a squirrel!" 10. Driving on the left is fine ... until you have to drive into a city ... 11. It's not just ancient castles, it's ruins of abbeys that are interesting too. 12. Scots always seem amazed that other people think their country is really special when to the rest of us, we're like, "Yeah it is!"

I am Scottish and love my country, we are very friendly and welcome tourists to our little neighborhoods. We will always give directions and recommendations of where to go! My top 2 bits of advice would be get out of the city and visit the surrounding areas, I live very close to Dundee which is great for visitors lots to see and do, but a short drive away is Glamis castle which is truly breathe taking (and even as a local a great place to visit). My 2nd piece of advice is definitely try the food, we have lots of interesting flavours for you to try the top ones being (in my opinion) Lorne/square sausage, irn bru, tablet (it is very sweet), haggis, arbroath smokie, and any local fish. Enjoy the beautiful views 😁😁

There are some absolutely beautiful parts of England - bits of Cornwall, Yorkshire, Northumberlandare as beautiful, in their own way, as anything in Scotland. There is plenty more to the Hebrides than just Skye. The place is overrun with tourists in the summer months without the infrastructure to support it. Our meat is pretty famous too (not just venison and aberdeen angus). There are quite a few reasonably priced restaurants in Scotland with Michelin stars that you could try. We have even been known to take families of complete (but willing) strangers to dinner to show them how good Scots food is! Give us a shout next time you're in Edinburgh - it would be our pleasure 😁.
