Britain is in the throes of a serious economic crisis and many Scots are wondering if things wouldn’t be better if their country was independent. Although it lost a referendum on independence back in 2014, the Scottish government still wants out.
Many Scottish voters support Scotland’s nationalist First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, including musician Neil Mackay. A long time supporter of independence, Mackay organizes large-scale demonstrations, where thousands of people protest in favor of leaving the UK. Rising energy and food prices are hitting people hard, the length and breadth of the country . One of them is single mother Sandra MacPherson. Like many others, she has been on a very tight budget this winter. Advocates of Scottish independence blame Westminster for their plight, whereas opponents blame the Scottish government. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her party, the SNP, have long made it clear they favor a fresh referendum; but in November 2022, the UK Supreme Court ruled that a new referendum may only take place with British government approval. As with Brexit, the issue of independence is proving a divisive one.

I was a student in Newcastle between 2012 - 2015. I took the chance to visit Scotland just 2 days before the independence referendum. I stayed there for 3 days. The atmosphere was really bizarre. It is a lifetime question but the Scotts treat it like a party. They vote in droves and celebrate it like it is a big party or something. Now I am back in Singapore, whenever someone asked me the past of the UK, I always say Scotland. 😍😘 It is just beautiful. And my Scottish friends are some of the friendliest bunch of people I ever met. Whatever the opinion of the majority of the public Scots now, I just wish to visit it again someday.

something ive noticed in this documentary is most proponents of independence are either the normal folk who are struggling and the people defending the union are in a pretty comfortable position
@EpicTutorialTips
@EpicTutorialTips 4 ай бұрын
That's because those people are targeted with lies and given the impression all their problems will be fixed overnight by this single issue. But it won't, and that's what the rest of us recognise. Holyrood has plenty of powers devolved to it, but it plays on the emotions of people, especially younger people or disadvantaged people, by stating that the problems exist because of Westminster. What people don't realise, is that the power is devolved so it is not for Westminster to address the issue, that competence is with Holyrood - but the SNP has been in power for well over a decade, and they've used that time exclusively and in whole to push the agenda of independence, even when it has come at the detriment of every other aspect of life. People are unhappy with all the other aspects of life being ignored, but instead of Holyrood just addressing the issues and fixing the problems, they use the situation to blame Westminster. It's a situation where Holyrood has manufactured problems and allowed them to escalate, just to use it for political reasons to cause division. And that, is precisely why the SNP is on track to lose most of their seats in our next election, because the people who had been hoodwinked by this party are starting to realise that the question of independence is separate to normal function of everyday life and governance, of which Holyrood is responsible, not Westminster.

I am Scottish and support independence and I often wonder how many supporters of movements like Scotland matters realize that the guy that runs it is well off. His message comes from a perspective of WM is better for Scotland, because he is not struggling. He does not have to make the difficult choices that most Scots are having to make right right now, so for him all is rosy and he convinces his supporters that they better off in the union, when loads of them in fact ARE having to make the tough choices, because of decision made by WM, out with Scotland's control. It is frustrating to see rich people getting people to support things against their own interests.

If many Scots are struggling now as you say - how would independence fix that problem? - eg - the cost of food & energy were highlighted as problems - how would independence fix those? - which decisions made in Westminster caused these problems & what would the alternaives of an independent government be to fix them?
@johncarney9049
@johncarney9049 Жыл бұрын
@@fraserct533 I realize this response is going to be considered ignorant and that is fine, even I will concede it is. Having said that though, my response to your questions is quite simply this: I don't care anymore, it couldn't get much worse, but can get better. During the 2014 referendum Scotland was told a great many thing would happen IF Scotland voted for independence. Some of these were: We would have higher cost of clothing, we would see higher costs of food, we would see rises in prices of everything, we would see a major jumps in energy costs, we would definitely see austerity and the list goes on. Here we are now 2023 and 8-9 years later and EVERYTHING, that would happen to an independent Scotland has happened while part of the UK and there is literally nothing Scotland can do about it. The media and the UK Govt, like to blame "external influences" like the pandemic and the Ukrainian war as the reason why the UK is getting hammered and they only partially right. What they don't mention is Brexit. This is something that Scotland has no say in at all, yet it is probably the single reason why the UK has the lowest growing GDP in Europe. Even with global pressures all G7 countries have recovered to pre pandemic levels, yet the UK is lagging. Not just lagging but it's economy is shrinking. We have increased imports and reduced exports, having put up trade barriers with our closest trading partners in favour of far flung places like Australia and New Zealand, that actually offer no growth to the UK GDP, by the UK Govt own impact assessment reports. At least if independent, Scotland would have control of things like immigration, which would help greatly with the staff shortages across all sectors right now. We would be able to join the SM and CU - don't even need to be an EU member for that. Restore freedom of movement. Enter into our own trade agreements that will benefit Scotland, it's economy and it's people. I don't see any of this happening while in the UK, as something weird has taken hold of rational thought in WM. One of the reasons stated by the UK ministers recently for Scotland not leaving, is that it is an energy rich country and it is our "obligation" to share that with the rest of the UK. Yet despite that being the case Scotland pays higher energy costs than anywhere else in the UK, why is that? Right there is an export market for Scotland as even the UK admits it produces more than it uses. It seems to me that can only be good to grow an economy and also reduce the cost of energy for the Scottish people, reducing the trade barriers that are currently hampering trade with our closest markets, would start to see prices coming down, as it is extra tariffs, increased paperwork etc that is driving prices up. It is costing companies more to deal with the extra paperwork, and they cannot absorb those costs by themselves, so they pass some on, which ultimately ends up taking out the consumers pocket. Removing the extra paper work by joining the SM and CU, will bring prices down. I know it's an ignorant comment but there it is. My view is go for broke, sever ties and sink or swim - BUT it is a challenge that I think the people of Scotland are up to, even those opposed to independence, when they start to see the benefits. It would not be easy and there may well be hard times for a period of time, but at least we would be free to take appropriate steps to deal with what comes up - right now we cannot.

@@johncarney9049 It's not an ignorant response at all. With independence the Scottish people and government will have the power to shape Scotland, be it for better or worse. Rejoining the EU and/or previous trade agreements would be in your own hands. The independence movement that freed Ireland is a good historical comparison. The Brits said it wouldn't work because the Irish were just a bunch of poor, uneducated farmers. And it was tough going for the Republic of Ireland for many decades, but look at how it's transformed and is still transforming itself with help from the EU and without dictates from England.

Poverty has been a big driver of what has/will happen in the UK. Some voted to leave the EU under the pretence that their life would improve i.e. more local investment, particularly in the impoverished north of England. That investment didn't materialise... My concern is that history will repeat and independence won't be the silver bullet some hope and it will make things worse. I think the UK needs some deep political reform to start healing as the current conservative / nationalist combo isn't really helping the people, it's half the problem.

Poverty is lower, in particular child poverty, in Scotland specifically because of who we vote for. I only visited Scotland once in my life, as a child, when I was a nine year old boy, in the summer of 97, during a summer holiday with my parents and three siblings. We stayed in a small town called Aviemore, not far from Inverness for a month,. I recall my brother and I, playing football with two local boys, David and Peter, almost everyday in the backyard of our holiday rental, before we went off on our adventures in the Scottish Highlands. We used to play matches and switch teams. Like, they’d be Glasgow Rangers and we’d be the Celtics. Or we’d be Argentina and they’d be Germany 😆 😂 This reminded me of them. I hope they’re doing well, and they’ve managed to have a wonderful life for the past 26 years. It made me realize how life can be so different, for people that were once a part of yours, even if they were, for a mere month only. I hope they both have solid jobs, unscathed by unemployment, alcoholism, drug abuse, divorce, health problems, or poverty. I truly hope they’re somewhere in Scotland or elsewhere, and truly happy or at least content with life.

I am Scottish first, British second, European third and I can be all three simultaneously, whilst living in an independent Scotland as an equal member of the UK and the European Union. That is what I strive for and so should anyone born in this great country, who believes and is confident in a strong Scotland, that is proud of its heritage, it’s abilities as a modern nation and its future. Should fear be the decisive factor for ignoring the opportunity to become an independent nation and if so, what a truly sad way to live your life, when grasping opportunities, working tirelessly and striving for a bright future, should be what every person does as an individual in their life and together as a people for our nation. Stop living your life in fear and grab the opportunity in front of you. Are you living in fear, or hiding in fear, of a life that could see your children and grandchildren, wake up to a future to be proud of.

I'm an "Earthling" first, a European second, and Dutch third. I care more about the earth then about just the continent or the country I live in. Which doesn't mean I'm not proud of the country the Netherlands has become, but if needed I can move to another country (I've lived in the UK for years). Or another continent. But not to another planet. I wish for an independent Scotland, because England, the rulers of the union, don't care about Scotland at all and treat it like a colony. Alba gu bràth!
@GuusJanssen
@GuusJanssen Жыл бұрын
@Barry I have no idea who you're replying to, but let me answer that question. - _"why are most English people happy for us to end the union"_ Which poll do you get this from? You're saying most English people want to see the UK break up, but I can't find any poll confirming that. - Barry, why is the UK government actively blocking anything related to Scottish independence? The UK gets a lot more money from Scotland than what they send back, so they don't want to lose the goose that lays the golden eggs. It's in the interest of the UK to keep Scotland a part of it, to keep the Scottish money in England. - How would the UK have reacted if after the EU referendum the EU replied with "that's not going to happen UK, you're not allowed to leave the EU"? They were already calling the EU a dictatorship and the EUSSR and other nonsense, but when the UK blocks even a referendum about Scotland's own future it is totally fine. It couldn't be any clearer that the UK is a dictatorship, with England as its dictator, and Scotland is a colony of England which isn't allowed to become independent. It's a disgrace.

The thing about the initial campaign (the most recent, let’s say…) was how everyone mentioning how much Scotland apparently gained from being in the union (we do to a degree) . But it was never pointed toward just how much the English benefitted from the union, it was always how much Scotland would regret their decision by going it alone (something the past Scot’s fought and died for). England, over the last few hundred years, has benefitted greatly from the union, but it was as if the general public took no notice - the general reaction was “let them do it, it makes no difference to us” 😂 It does make a difference, a huge difference.

@a.westenholz4032

@@worldgonecrazy Hmm the working class in England that voted for Brexit did so because they were financially desperate after years of austerity and were seeking any solution being promised. Unfortunately they were easily intentionally misled by to use that frustration to vote Brexit. Ironically, that same desperation exists in Scotland, but is unlikely to blame the SNP or Holyrood for the their troubles- they'll blame Brexit and WM. So naturally, even if they don't think their situation will improve right away, they will start to support independence more and more. The Unionists, being generally fairly wealthy and older, and not sharing of these concerns, I don't think quite grasp the situation. The arguments they make might sound convincing to those of their own mindset and circumstances, but not to those who lost their shop or can't heat their homes due to the rise of costs because of Brexit. Trying to make the case against independence will be like trying to roll an increasingly heavier ball uphill until it just refuses to go farther and rolls down squashing you in the process. The longer this is dragged out for, the heavier that ball will get. Both WM and the pro-Unionists, I think made a strategic error in not holding a referendum as soon as possible- as it is certain another will be held at some point and it can only garner more support with time. They had an outside chance here 2023, but I doubt they will after that.
