We chose the unicorn because the English national animal is a lion and Unicorns are the enemy of lions. The thistle was chosen because when we were being invaded by vikings one of them stepped on a thistle alerting us to their presence so we could fight them off.

Well considering he lives in America and reports news for America most of the time, then yeah I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't well known in the UK, but he actually is. He got more than 4 million views per week for his first season, and Huffington post called his program, "the best television show of 2014". Sounds like you're the one being a twat here since you're the only one insulting people for liking a rather popular show. And if you want to say someone is retarded, I'd say the guy that decided to shit on someone in the comment section of the person's youtube channel, (you know, the one filled with his fans), is pretty retarded, and that would be you.

@Clx L actually the EU has preemptively said they would admit Scotland to the EU if it became independent. So I think that poll was not true..
@Shmingleshmangle
@Shmingleshmangle 3 жыл бұрын
@Lm ao For what reason would Scotland not be accepted? We meet all the requirements, the only issue would be worries of other territories within the EU (Catalonia for example) getting the same idea. If the whole of the EU was to reject Scotland on the basis of some of their member states own internal affairs (hardly Scotlands fault) then they would show themselves to be incredibly undemocratic and unwelcoming, and would be shooting themselves in the foot for the world to see. That wouldn't happen, we would be welcomed, especially after Brexit.
@andrew4363
@andrew4363 3 жыл бұрын
@@acebalistic1358 yeah the big worry was Spain because of Catalonia, but Spain recently intervened and said they wouldn’t block an independent Scotland’s entry.
@lacdirk
@lacdirk 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shmingleshmangle The reason why the EU won't accept Scotland immediately is that it lacks several institutions and powers right now. Those need to be set up and develop a track record, as they will be the ones implementing both Scottish and EU policies. A far more logical progression would be for Scotland to join the EFTA, which it would be able to do almost immediately. The EEA accession would be the next step, and that too should not be too hard in principle (see below). After that, EU accession can be considered. However, a lot will be determined by the way the English border is resolved.
@Shmingleshmangle
@Shmingleshmangle 3 жыл бұрын
@@lacdirk I don't disagree with any of that, I know it would take time but it's not impossible like many make it out to be. Also, the border is an issue created by English voters who want brexit, not Scottish voters who voted against it. If Brexit hadn't happened, and Scotland was independent and in the EU alongside England then we would have no issues. Sadly it's another classic example of us getting the opposite of what we vote for/English voters and Westminster dictating what happens to the lives of people here in Scotland.

Fun fact: one of the popular legends around the thistle becoming the national flower of Scotland is that the English were tying to scale the walls of Edinburgh at night in order to invade, yet one of the English soldiers accidentally grasped a thistle while climbing, letting out a piercing cry that woke up the guards, who then successfully repelled them. Granted there’s no evidence behind this story, yet it’s still a pretty fun tale...

Well, as the saying goes: "It may not be true, but it does make a good story". ;-) And about the thistle: I think a country which chooses a flower as its national symbol which is at the same time beautiful and to be handled with care to not hurt yourself is a force to be reckoned with, because that's a country with an attitude, as the motto "Nemo me impune lacessit" ("No one provokes me with impunity", or in Scots "Wha daur meddle wi' me?") on the Scottish coat of arms already strongly suggests in the first place. :-)

@@baguettegott3409 By "some senator" I presume your referencing Senator James Lankford. Senator James Lankford is a right-wing, Baptist (i.e. a religious figure; protestant), republican who has held power since 2015. Given their religious beliefs, it can be assumed they held some discriminatory opinion on LGBT issues long before reading JK. Rowling's writings. Given his quotation of her, it can be agreed that Senator James Lankford seemingly admires, respects, or has given thought to JK. Rowling, but is this, factoring in Senator James Lankford's religious beliefs (which also include moral beliefs), equivalent to Senator James Lankford being influenced by JK. Rowling? Is influence the same as agreement? In my own opinion, I think the answer is both yes and no. It depends on the time scale. For example, I would be much quicker to blame the Church and the Bible itself on Senator James Lankford's beliefs than the views than JK. Rowlings. Senator James Lankford agrees with the Bible, yes, - but presumably only agrees with such a book due to its influence as, being in a religious family, it was probably his only vessel for learning about issues - it played a governing role. If JK. Rowling has played a parental or governing figure, such as the Church, I'd be much more inclined to say they had influence, but they did not (one may be tempted to reference JK. Rowling also wrote successful books, but I've yet to see any transphobia in them, just bad writing and a severe lack of snakes for a book with a snake talker). You may be correct on the media argument, or you may not - I don't know since I don't pay attention to media, and if everyone stopped paying attention to the media, the media wouldn't have any influence in the first place. *We can all do our bit by ignoring people in the media.*

Are necessary imports getting pricier due to a weakened currency? Etc. Etc. Etc. And in case you’ve forgotten, the pound has lost 10%-20% of it value against the Euro since the Brexit process began and though it has rallied against the dollar after losing around 17%, it is still about 6% under the pre-Brexit exchange rate. As a mainland European who briefly lived in the UK prior to Brexit and used to buy stuff online from there, the low value of the pound is obvious, since I continuously have to remind myself to recalculate at a significantly lower rate than I reflexively do. Of course, this issue also comes up far less frequently, since it rarely makes sense (due to added duties) to purchase stuff from the UK after it left the common market.

You can raise the nominal value of the currency as well as increase all the prices by the same percentage, and the actual value would remain unchanged, but the price as expressed in other currency (and vice versa) would change. What you want is a currency that's relatively stable so people's savings and investments aren't suddenly worth a lot less, and which allows foreign investors to invest in your country with relatively little risk (at least, as long as we have a global capitalist system, that's the reality we need to deal with). Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If the scots knew then what they know now, I have no doubt they would have voted for independence when they had the chance. The U.K Government aren’t stupid. They can see this, which is why they presently won’t grant them another referendum. But it’s a dangerous game they’re playing, because they must know that calls for another referendum will only grow stronger the longer it continues to be refused, with hostilities and resentment growing alongside it.

They don't need the UK to grant them another referendum. They don't even need to go to war. They have the UK's nukes-all of them. "We're leaving and we want you to come get these horse shit nuclear weapons that shouldn't even exist" is an enormously, enormously powerful statement, because nobody wants to tell you you can keep the nukes but they're not letting you leave. If you let them leave and then invade, it's a war of aggression, they have their own army, NATO shows up, the UN throws sanctions at them, the EU starts causing economic damage, the WTO starts causing economic damage, and everything gets very bad.

@Gingineer1996 5 жыл бұрын
@Toori Baba Landscape is pretty important regarding sustainable development, it's why we do landscape visual impact assessments in Scotland (LVIA) to minimise their impact on other aspects aside from the environment (social & economic). The place Lew 287 is talking about does have a massive number of wind turbines, though they don't significantly impact the view. Main problem with wind turbines in Scotland are their impact on peatland, an important wildlife habitat and highly effective carbon sink. Often developers will come in stating that they'll carefully transplant peat if necessary, but often end up just chucking in big pile, resulting in much of sequestered carbon to be released into the atmosphere. They are fined for this, but the damage is already done.
@albertrogers2506
@albertrogers2506 4 жыл бұрын
@Toori Baba I am amazed at how inefficiently even a 102 metre head of water makes use of the solar energy that produced it. With a gravitational field that gives an acceleration of 9.81 m/s/s, each kilogram (kg) of water has a potential energy at that height, of one kJ (kilojoule). The solar energy required to evaporate that kg of water, a volume of one litre, is 2250 kJ. Hydro is the ONLY solar power worth anything, but don't imagine it's efficient. Nuclear power, owing to the fact that tiny amounts of uranium, and since the 1960s thorium, can be used to deliver as much energy as millions of times their mass of anything chemical, whether it be coal, or methane, or octane, AND oxygen, or for more violent uses, the nitroglycerine in dynamite, or tri-nitro-toluol (TNT)
@albertrogers2506
@albertrogers2506 4 жыл бұрын
@Toori Baba As for wind and solar, consider the fact that to stop making oceanic acidification and biosphere warming even worse, we need to END all fossil CO₂ emissions. The mastermind of Energiewende in Germany is now promoting a gas pipeline to bring methane from Russia to Germany. The fossil carbon industries in Germany encouraged the idea that replacing nuclear with "renewables" was a Good idea, quite simply because they know better than anybody that wind and solar are no threat to their existence, whereas France managed to Do Without coal from the Ruhr, by Électricité de France's building nuclear power plants. Moles for the Fossil Fuel Filth have somehow got the monstrous untruth accepted in France by more than half of the people sampled in a recent poll, that nuclear power is responsible for more global warming than coal burning. This, in the land of Lavoisier, who figured out that Joseph Priestley's "dephlogisticated air" was a single gas, and called it oxygen. Priestley had made a brilliant discovery, but it's slightly incorrect to say he discovered oxygen.

I remember debating with a friend of mine on why the US territories and D.C. should become legitimate states and his only offense to the idea of adding 6 states was that the US flag would need more stars. What's funny is that as a Norwegian I am strongly against my country joining the EU, but at the same time I was equally opposed to the Brexit. :) There is a rational explanation though. 1. UK's economy is much more competitive than Norway's economy on the continental market, especially agriculture. This means that protectionism is essential for Norwegian industry to survive. This is not the case regarding the UK, at least not to the same extent. 2. In general, I very much like the concept of the EU, so I don't want to see it fail. However, Norway is irrelevant in the larger scheme of things here, it does not affect the faith of EU. UK on the other hand is influential enough that it will send shock waves through the entire union if they leave, possibly even sparking a domino effect. That would be a catastrophe for Europe IMO.

Do. It's really beautiful, and I can't wait to be somewhere and see some tourist try to talk to one of the locals who's been in my town for like 500 generations and has such a strong accent and uses so much Scots *I* can't understand and I just get t watch as some unsuspecting American asks "Hey, I'm not from here, do you know what's a good bar here?" and the local goes "Ah yeah, of coorse ei cah poin' ya tae a ged poub, der's a class yen right doon tha road, tho ye shoul' mind the younguns, they're right scaffy yen's, ay? I deh ken aboot tha' yen right outside, bu' mind yoursel' laddie, yeh never knoo, aye. Have a ged day, luv, see ya la'er, cah wai' tae see youall comfeh 'ere!" and the American has to decide whether to ask someone else or just pretend like they know what a "yen" is and what "scaffy" means and I get to be like "Ha! I know what they mean! Mostly..."

The best representation of Scotland and England's relationship is the chain on the unicorn. The unicorn is scotlands national animal because it can't be tamed. So on the British crest the lion wears a crown and the unicorn is chained up

Except the Unicorn is also wearing a crown and has always been depicted as chained, even in Scotlands own coat of arms. The unicorn is chained by a crown in fact, _probably_ as a reference to the Kings of Scotland using royal power to control the country.
