How Scotland could do with players like this today! I remember they qualified for five,YES FIVE World cups in a row.1974,1978,1982,1986 and 1990.It’s just my opinion,but Bill Shankly should have got the Scotland job when Willie Ormand went.Shanks had left Liverpool unexpectedly in 74, and was at a loose end for ages.Imagine him taking Scotland to the World Cup in Argentina in 1978 instead of the indecisive Ally McLeod.How McLeod left out Andy Gray for instance who’d been voted PFA Young player and players player of the year in 1977,was baffling,especially when you think the most successful team in the First Division then was Liverpool,who won the League and European Cup,with Man Utd winning the FA Cup,while Gray’s team,Aston Villa,finished fourth and won the League cup.Shankly would have taken him no doubt about that.

The goal by Dalglish against Wales makes for a really interesting pub quiz question - Who scored for the away team on his home ground yet it was not an own goal? Although it was a home game for Wales, it was switched to Anfield from Ninian Park in Cardiff because of previous crowd disorder involving Wales supporters. Anfield was Dalglish’s home ground at the time since he was playing for Liverpool however in this game he was playing for the away team - Scotland. 🙂

Scotland were genuinely fancied in Argentina, priced at 8/1 by the bookies. They had the squad to do well there, but probably peaked a year early. Also didn't help that the manager messed up big time, not giving enough respect to their opponents and only playing his best team when it was too late.

You don’t get qualifying groups like that now.
@seltaeb96913 жыл бұрын
Yup, it's Iceland, Greenland & any other place smaller than Scotland that kicks us in the bollocks. These qualifying groups now go on for ever & I just lose interest by time finals arrive.

Our biggest failure was Alan Rough as I was wondering why Peter Latchford or McCloy weren't in net as both were used to the big stage in Scotland, Rough was shit as when he got thoroughly tested he bottled it.
@Ruda-n4h Жыл бұрын
Rough was not up to international standards but I will defend him as he was a part time-keeper and McLeod knew this, and in the game against Peru he actually saved Scotland from a bigger defeat.
@gerrycoogan6544 Жыл бұрын
For one thing, Latchford was English so selecting him would have got Scotland disqualified!

A very good team with a mediocre manager, an absolutely rubbish GK and players who believed their own hype.....who should have easily gone through the group stages.

Those pigeons from Peru soon sorted this lot out And as for the Joe Jordan hand ball at Anfield will always be remembered

Just 4 games to get to the world cup, and no need to play Andorra, San Marino or Gibraltar. Damn shame they came up against the superpowers if iran and Peru.......

Remarkable how Scottish the Celtic players were back then, the Billy’s, Jimmy’s, Danny’s, and so on on. It seems good Scottish Catholics back then were proud to be Scottish, and didn’t name their children the likes of Aiden and other pseudo-Irish names. You can tell be their qualities as men, as well, compared to their cretins today. Rangers fan here, as you may have guessed.

Scotland were robbed of blatant penalty awards in these highlights then given a penalty for Joe Jordan's handball in the Wales box! It might be karma but refereeing in 1978 suuuuuucked.
@darrenchristian141 Жыл бұрын
How the fuck did Scotland get a penalty. Seriously like Scotland, but would of bottled Jordan that night .. Wales done twice ..thank fuck wasnt against Emgland . Be hand of God again 😊

Scotland were a great team. Pity they resorted to cheating against the Welsh.

That bloody awful song and Ally McLeod’s hubris, water the defining moments of that campaign 🤣
@seltaeb96913 жыл бұрын
Better than England in 74 & 78! It was good while it lasted & Ally gave us hope. We are a small nation of 5 million but produced so many great players that English teams needed to win anything. The players were at fault not Ally. He was a good man & overall a good manager. Should have took Alex Ferguson with him.

Judging by their qualifying display, its little wonder Scotland failed miserably in Argentina.
@Ruda-n4h3 жыл бұрын
Very true. They had a GOOD side not great and were handicapped by key players being injured and off the boil/past it by the summer and a manager who was out of his depth. He picked his old mates from Aberdeen - Bobby Clark and Joe Harper - PLEASE.

You had the players to have lifted 😆 the 78 WC , top midfielders coming out of Alleys arse , Dalglish Jordan Joe almost always turned up on the Big Occasions , maybe the Defeat to us knocked the stuffing out of your Boys , strange you had it All going for use , I think Bonnie Scotland got caught in the headlights - Pity Really as at that time you had us English behind use as well .
