I said that some people are spreading false news about the lives of people in the East through dirty western media. softlystroll. Watching this has brought back some childhood memories. Most England games weren't shown live on TV in those days and you had to listen to the BBC radio commentary by Peter Jones, Bryon Butler et al. I particularly remember the stumbling performances against Finland and Luxembourg at home where the frustrated Wembley crowd were chanting "What a load of rubbish" in response to England's uninspiring efforts. England only really gave two good performances in the qualifying campaign, beating Finland 4-1 away and Italy 2-0 at home. It was very disappointing as Liverpool won the European Cup in 1977 with a largely English team so it seemed the talent was there.

To be honest England we’re unlucky to get perennial qualifiers Italy in the same group, FIFA had yet to get their act together with proper weighted qualification groups. Despite some patchy performances they won all their games bar Rome. In the modern era of 6 or 7 team qualification groups they would likely finish top with that record. The following morning, they were saying things like 'Oh No England. A Terrible Performance. 2 out of 10.' They were correct though as it did go on goal difference seeing as England and Italy beat each other in the home games by 2-0, therefore, the victories against the two minnows were going to matter in the end. Yes I grew up in the 70s, it was just a series of heartbreaks being an England fan. We didn't qualify for a single tournament for 10 years from 1970 until 1980.

@robertmac9057 and yet English teams dominated the European Cup in that era....winning it 7 times out of 8 ( including 6 in a row )

@@ITSONLYKZbin-p3p Yes it was very frustrating the difference between the success at club and international level. The Liverpool team that won the European Cup in 1977 had nine English starters, and Ron Greenwood picked seven of them for a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley. He abandoned this experiment after the game ended in a drab 0-0 draw. After that Liverpool built their success around the three Scots Dalglish, Souness and Hansen and became less reliant on English players.

That was the World Cup we Scottish were supposed to win. We had the finest players in the world and the English were supposed to watch us on tv winning it all after our disastrous 1974 failure
