It was Ron Greenwood's first game as manager. England were bang average under Revie in the other qualifying games. Barnes and Coppell were outstanding against Italy and Keegan had probably his best game ever for England.

We didn't really know how good Poland were at the time, and they were even better when the 1974 World Cup finals came around with the addition of young players like Szarmach.

Stan Bowles had been exiled from national team duty since '74, when he walked out on the squad after being subbed by Joe Mercer versus NI. Revie recalled him for the November '76 game v. Italy and then one more time against Holland the next year.

When England played Italy and lost 2:0 in Rome I was 8 and watching it with my Dad. Always remember him saying under his breath “goal” before the cross came in for Bettega. He saw it unfold and knew Italy would score. As an 8 year old it was really tough watching England get totally outplayed that Saturday afternoon.

softlystroll. Watching this has brought back some childhood memories. Most England games weren't shown live on TV in those days and you had to listen to the BBC radio commentary by Peter Jones, Bryon Butler et al. I particularly remember the stumbling performances against Finland and Luxembourg at home where the frustrated Wembley crowd were chanting "What a load of rubbish" in response to England's uninspiring efforts. England only really gave two good performances in the qualifying campaign, beating Finland 4-1 away and Italy 2-0 at home. It was very disappointing as Liverpool won the European Cup in 1977 with a largely English team so it seemed the talent was there.

To be honest England we’re unlucky to get perennial qualifiers Italy in the same group, FIFA had yet to get their act together with proper weighted qualification groups. Despite some patchy performances they won all their games bar Rome. In the modern era of 6 or 7 team qualification groups they would likely finish top with that record. It was only winning 2-0 in Luxembourg that done for England in this group. I can remember the newspapers before the game saying England needed to win 10-0 to rack up the goal difference over Italy. The following morning, they were saying things like 'Oh No England. A Terrible Performance. 2 out of 10.' They were correct though as it did go on goal difference seeing as England and Italy beat each other in the home games by 2-0, therefore, the victories against the two minnows were going to matter in the end. Italy ended up with their goal difference three better off than ours.

Some of the dates are very suspect. The 2-0 defeat to Italy in Rome was in the summer if 76, the return at Wembley that England won 2-0 was in Nov 77.

The Italy-England World Cup game in Rome was in November 1976. There was a game between the two in the US Bicentennial Tournament in summer 1976 when England won 3-2.

Don Revie, should never have left Leeds United for that England job. Jack Charlton, Malcom Alyson, Terry Venables, Brian Clough, Ron Greenwood or Bobby Robson should have got the job instead. Don Revie's departure brought terrible disaster to Leeds United for many years. FA always hated Leeds United !!

I think it made sense for Don Revie to get it given his success at Leeds. Revie was unlucky here as it was a hard group with Italy who were a very very good side and could have won that WC and only 1 could qualify.

@@r4h4al Picking coaches from winning clubs was the problem. Some players like Keegan, Macdonald and Hughes could not adapt to Don's style of play!! Germany's Helmet Schoen, Italy's Enzo Bearzot , Poland's Kazimierz Gorzki were not from winning clubs, but were part of a long term coaching plan ascending from youth to national teams. Anyway, Don Revie was not an England man. He was more suitable for club like Leeds where he had long lasting excellant relationship and trust with the players. Bremner left for Hull when Don left for England in 1975. The continuity was broken. No smooth transition. Brian Clough was no Don Revie, was sacked after 40 days!! Leeds got relegated in 1982!!. A very Sad Day for such a Top Club in the World!!!

But he can't do much because he lacks quality players like Terry Venables had in Euro 1996 Gaza, McMahon, Shearer, Tony Adams.They were of a different class!!! The current lot plays fast but lacks imagination and consistency. They are not good as Spain, Belgium or Italy. Too many foreign players in EPL caused this. Italy faced this in 1980s but Italian FA quickly restricted the number of foreign players and emerged players like, Zola, Barresi, Baggio, Paulo Maldini. Many national teams have declined terribly due to too many foreign players. Even Germany and Netherlands have declined!! Germany went home after round 1 in 2018. That's unheard of!! Every 2-4 years we see a drop in quality. Its a different game now with emphasis on theatrics and faking injuries frequent divings!! And WAR is only helping gambling syndicates to fix matches !!!

The Liverpool team that won the European Cup in 1977 had nine English starters, and Ron Greenwood picked seven of them for a friendly against Switzerland at Wembley. He abandoned this experiment after the game ended in a drab 0-0 draw. After that Liverpool built their success around the three Scots Dalglish, Souness and Hansen and became less reliant on English players.
