Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I am Canadian and I was Type 1 (previously known as Juvenile Diabetes) for 33 years. I grew up just outside of Toronto and as a kid I heard the story of Macleod, Banting & Best and of course 14 year old Leonard Thompson. My body has been destroyed and diabetes and every time I hear about someone young being diagnosed it breaks my heart. Diabetes is waging a war in your body and every high blood sugar is a major battle that even if you get your blood sugar levels back in control, damage to your body is done. After years and years of constant attacks on your body, the damage starts to manifest. 10 years ago my damage manifested after a 33 year war and my kidneys failed. 8 years ago I received a kidney and pancreas transplant inside the very hospital where Dr. Banting & Dr. Best invented the very insulin that gave me those extra 33 years of life. I should have died November 12 1989 at the age of 9 years old but two men didn't give up and persevered until they came up with a medicine that saved the lives of millions upon millions of lives. They are one of the reasons why I am proud to be a Canadian.

Diabetes was not my friend so I wanted to learn as much as I could going into this medicine. Wonderful you put humans, real people to the discoveries of treatment and to think as well it all began with a Scot! Thank You.

As someone whose best friend is a severe type 1 diabetic, I can't say how much I appreciate you covering this story, Bruce! I knew half of the story, but you filled in all of the gaps nicely. The 'Tolkien touch' of humor was a good giggle to cover a very serious subject and was also greatly appreciated. It's a shame that it takes such great egos to create such incredible things sometimes, but whether they liked each other or not, they still made a way for me to have my best friend for 51 years now! Thank you, gentlemen, for your diligent work and discovery! Thank you, Bruce, for an excellent story! Y'all take care now! 😊

Genuinely happy to see he’s been honoured with the lovely bench in Duthie Park, the city otherwise has a plaque at a house he used to live at and his grave in Allenvale, nothing truly honouring the man who discovered insulin! Also seeing you visit Allenvale is spooky cus I live a few minutes from there, get off my lawn you! 😜

Nice to see you do a walk around my alma mater. I had lectures for one of my courses in the JJR MacLeod auditorium. Interesting note on the patent for insulin: Collip, Banting and Best sold their patents to the University of Toronto for $1, so that it could be made available at low cost to diabetics. Before the video started, I was expecting it to be about Alexander Fleming, and penicillin.

Another top notch lesson for the masses there Bruce. The work into handling the affliction of diabetes in all forms is still ongoing & Scotland still has its part to play, funnily enough just along the road fae yer hoose Bruce in....in DUNDEE! (ahh well nothing perfect 😂). One such person involved in the ongoing quest (whom helped to make pills to aid type 2 diabetes) is a good friend, cohort & drinking buddy of mine. Within oor wee group of pals he is lovely known as "big Irish" (mainly because he's very tall & his mum is the greatest Irish maw of all time)....should point out we where highly skilled at nicknames in oor we troop of chums so much so another pal with the surname Wright is known as "Lefty" (where ever did we come up with these names😂). Anyway Professor "big Irish" still works within micro biology & biochemistry continuing the work at Dundee university to find "a better way". To quote the great man upon a discovery that helped to produce a positive outcome "I PURE F*CKIN LOVE THE MAGIC OF SCIENCE!" (Don't think that'll be printed in any medical journals 😂) So from the remaining "Le Capitaine & the 4 Musketeers"....the right honourable Lefty, the Tangerine hammer, Face aka the 13th Duke of Valrose & myself "Capitaine Gros Pantalon" to Professor "big Irish"...."keep up the bloody good Stirling work laddie & a lovely creamy pint of Guinness is always near to hand pal". Side note: we're proud that at least one of us drunken bums done something positive in life....oh Lefty is a programmer for Rockstar games (north) & did character development in the GTA & Red Dead Redemption games but it's not quite the same as helping find a cure for a disease.....saying that between us we've probably spread more diseases than helped cure but luckily there's something to help stop the itching... Wonder if a Scot help figure that one out🤔😂😂😂. Till the next time Bruce!!!

I am from perth and lived in Canada since 1957. Banting is recognised as the greatest Canadian. The insulin story is just the most obvious but he also gave insulin to the world for $1 and never proffited. He reenlisted in the forces for WW 2 and was shot down . Perhaps neurotic , perhaps difficult but he enbodied all that is selfless and heroic

I have had diabetes for 17 years though I have been paraplegic all my life. I walk on callipers as I always have, but I am a big fan of your histories. mind you there is a legend that is based upon a Lothian Glen called Carriber where the pictish Lords and Gaeles forged a peace and first named this country "Scotland " the place has a natural amphitheatre near the river Avon near Torphichen village, and the ruins of a castle built in the Glen. there is also a cave called "wallaces Cave" where he was treated for an arrow wound from the battle of Falkirk, Longshanks was at the same time being treated for another arrow wound in his leg at Torphichen preceptory.

Another great video. And a decent explanation of diabetes. When I started my nurse training, porcine & bovine insulins were still the norm along with strict dietary control and monitoring of blood glucose by finger pricks. I was no diabetic nurse specialist (my sister was), but management of diabetes impacted on nearly every nurse’s practice. Early on, I witnessed the arrival of human insulins, now diabetes is very much part of a model of self care, with many people monitoring blood glucose through apps on phones and planning insulin intake according to what they are going to eat. A long way to come in just over 100 years. I thought you were kind to all of the participants, but it sounds like Banting didn’t quite understand the academic research model and the role of some within it. MacLeod’s role was obviously to add some quality assurance, oversight and as the senior person add credibility.without the 4 off them, it would probably have not gone very far and someone else would have built on their work anyway. After all, it was someone else who stumbled on the islets of Langerhans. My wife’s name is on several research papers as the nurse who consented and collected patient’s information. Her Consultant’s name comes first, for reasons above. Everyone knows that it’s the names in the middle that have done the work and that’ll be recognised as their career advances. It’s not as if Banting & the other’s contribution wasn’t recognised or isn’t remembered.

From Canada and being a type two diabetic the instant you said the name of the park and its location I knew exactly who you were going to talk about. Well done! The only people that have saved more lives are plumbers and before you scoff remember, Cholera, Typhoid and Dysentery. I just wanted to add a quote from Banting just to add more context and hopefully inspire people to read the stories (not taking sides just ensuring the Canadian perspective) the following quote "Macleod on the other hand was never to be trusted. He was the most selfish man I have ever known. He sought at every possible opportunity to advance himself. If you told Macleod anything in the morning it was in print or in a lecture in his name by evening … He was unscrupulous and would steal an idea or credit for work from any possible source." Also lets not forget Zuelzer another contributor that was snubbed by a pair of massive egos, fame hungry narcissists. As you said at the beginning it was accidents that started the pursuit of insulin and they both wanted to use it for fame and profit.

@@ScotlandHistoryTours Yes I noticed the softer approach and appreciate it. My intent was to provide a peek into how bitter and hostile the egocentric disagreements were. Honestly, once you have read both sides you realize that it truly was a drama of historic proportion and I am not sure it would not have been possible outside the Canadian environment. As mild as the quote was most don't understand how angry Banting must have been. There are no sorrys at all, while there is no foul language, the impugning of character in the quote is deep enough to be a declaration of loathing in Canada (yes the angrier you get us the politer we get ....). I truly believe that it was Macleod's leadership that allowed the team to progress forward despite the open hatred and hostility of two massive conflicting egos. In short even good men can be A-holes but that does not diminish the work the entire team did that has saved my life. ( I started out as a type one but am now down to a type two and with better diet maybe someday i will be off the metformin. All due to an early diagnosis based on their work.) (edited for punctuation and typos. lol) Thanks for the great work and love the episodes.

I lived in Toronto for several years, and would frequently pass the University of Toronto campus, riding the streetcar along College Ave. I don't know if it is true or not, but there was a room in one of the buildings that allegedly always had the lights on. It was said that the room was the lab in which insulin was discovered and that the lights were left on in recognition of the many late nights of research. While that has the tone of an urban legend to me, as with all such stories, it is the subscript that is important: why do people repeat the tale? True or not, many times I would pass by and look up, taking some comfort in the fact that research was always going on somewhere, largely unseen.

Sadly, I cannot document it, and the Nobel committee would never admit this, but for a reason I'll let you know at the end, I am quite certain of my information. The patent for insulin was sold for $1 to the University of Toronto, it is true. And U. Toronto sold it to Eli Lilly, which is also true. But this wasn't actually a case of Mr. Lilly deliberately short shrifting the scientists. It was no accident that the Nobel committee awarded them the Nobel Prize in Medicine that year: Mr. Lilly had leverage on the committee, and strong-armed them into awarding the prize, thus making sure that MacLeod and Banting were well compensated for their work... and that some other group besides his company would wind up footing the bill. MacLeod and Banting never really suffered in that deal at all, and it was known in advance what the deal was going to be among these men. As I said, I know this for certain: the man was my great uncle...

How about another Scotsman who emigrated to Canada and completely changed the world...? Alexander Graham Bell. Not only did he invent the Telephone, but he also built the FIRST airplane to fly in the British Empire (The Silver Dart - in Baddeck, Nova Scotia in 1909), but he also invented the Aileron - a KEY development for aircraft, as well as the Hydrofoil!

Brilliant episode. I keep hoping that one day you might imbibe something seriously silly and devote an episode to the two great Python Scottish poets, Ewan McTeagle and Arthur "Two Sheds" Jackson. These were genius because it was Oxbridge educated Southrons making fun of the savage English attitudes towards the Scots, as they also delved into with the Saga of Angus Podgorny ("Ach, Angus, ye're a stupid man!), who conspired with the alien blanc manges to steal Wimbledon. As a greet Scottish comedian yer own good self, do ye nae think it's time to celebrate the infamous Scottish sense of humour?
