Norwegian fishermen have a long history with Scotland. When my Great grand pappy. Was 14 somewhere around 1890, he got a job on a Norwegian fishing boat. And left Aardnamurchan Pt. By the time the first world war came along He had risen to skipper. And commanded a merchant vessel crossing the Atlantic. So the relationship with Scotland and Noway and also Denmark goes back a long way.

Yes, they do have a long history - Scots and Scandos strangling each other en masse as they and their smashed boats are sucked to the bottom of the sea by a howling maelstrom, there to be devoured by ginormous kraken who shytte them out as Englishmen. And never a horrid fate more deserved.

I got my DNA results back too. And it said that my father resembles the same exact heritage as a 100% Viking would. But yet how could this be, Because there were no Vikings in 1978. Then I contacted my DNA relatives and yes they did confirm that they were once related to a Norwegian, Scandinavian Viking that had the same type of Scandinavian mix as me. But they all told me that it was too far back in history for them to believe, But yet we share the same DNA. So my father must be older than I could imagine. Then I heard rumors about me being born from an Occult "Black Mass" just like on the movie's "Rosemary's baby" "Eye's wide shut" And on top of that, Being crazy enough, I have Norwegian Y-DNA Asperger's, The same kind that Hitler and the Nazi's kidnapped and were hiding. It's a special Y-bloodline gene passed from father to son. Aryan as it may be called. Before the US turned it into a white supremacist thing. The real Aryan's never came from White Europe and not all Vikings were Blonde and blue eyed. I am still trying to figure it all out. Perhaps it's just my imagination.

Having lived in Trondra and taught in Scalloway, I am very familiar with the story of the Shetland Bus. Some years ago, my wife and visited Telvåg on the west coast of Norway north of Bergen which was one of the Norwegian "terminals" of the Shetland Bus. There was a wee museum, which told the story of "Shetlands Larssen", the most daring Shetland Bus skipper, as you mention in the video. And, as always, it is a great video.

Brave men operating in poor conditions, never made Shetland, Orkney has been my furthest trip north in UK. The old boy who taught me to shoot as a lad had been in merchant navy during WWII, not something we discussed much but I had read a book (Victor, Warlord or Commando - actually The Kola Run 1941-1945 ) about the Arctic supply convoys and he had served on the supply runs, three times the ships he was on were sunk. We owe a huge debt to the Merchant Navy and those of many nationalities who served, in the main unrecognised for many years.

Great video, I was spellbound to it. One of the books my dad left me was "We Die Alone", a biography of Jan Baalsrud, one of the Norwegian agents landed in Norway (the author, David Howarth, also wrote a book called "The Shetland Bus"). We Die Alone is also a compulsive and spellbinding read. I salute the Norwegians who made the dangerous fight for freedom. But human motivation is many fold - many Norwegians also volunteered to fight on the Eastern Front against the Soviets.
@gorillaguerillaDK2 жыл бұрын
Yes, motivation to fight in a war can be complex! In my family, three brothers, one of them my paternal grandfather), and their cousin who they grew up with, went to fight in the Winter War in Finland, after returning home to Denmark, the cousin went to Germany to volunteer to fight against the USSR together with his close friend Christian Frederik von Schalburg, and the brothers ended up being part of the Danish Resistance Movement… Disillusioned by some of his experiences with the Waffen SS and the fact that while he was fiercely against the Soviet Union, he was probably never a full blown nazi like his friend, the cousin eventually ended up in a Penal Unit, where he died fighting somewhere on the Eastern Front, (it was never confirmed, but rumors said that he was executed by Military Police, after attempting to get back home). His friend, Christian von Schalburg had been a Nazi before the war started, but his hatred towards the Soviet Union had to do with part of his family were nobles in Russia before the revolution - he died on the Eastern Front as well….. While it’s important to condemn the Nazis, I do have a hard time condemning men like my grandfathers cousin! He was a soldier, and after his experience in Finland, he wanted to fight the Russians with his friend, and at the time that meant joining the Waffen SS - sure, it was foolish, and he paid the highest price! Sad story really

@@gorillaguerillaDK That is a sad story, but one that should be told. The choice between Soviet Russians or Nazis invading your country is a harsh one, one of those lesser of evils choices bumped up to heavy losses either way. I can't imagine how hard it must've been for those caught in the middle.

I love your stories of Scottish history and the beautiful places you visit and talk about. I always have loved the literature and legends of Scotland and Ireland and all of England, feeling a bit of it in my own blood maybe, but have never been (that I remember). It's really discouraging, though. Because it's so dadgum complicated and people moved around so much and moved boundaries so often I find it pretty much impossible to learn it. But probably some things stick in the mind here and there. If i had lived back in the day, I would have run and hidden under another identity if I had been anything of royalty. Something about the risk of imprisonment forever or having your head cut off just takes all the fun out of being heir to any throne. And there was definitely alot of that for some reason. Thank you for sharing all your knowledge. I really enjoy your videos and hope i can see you in person someday, somewhere. ❤🤠
