Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

One of the Scots who signed the Magna Carta, Alan of Galloway, who I believe was the Constable of Scots like his Hamlet-esque father Lochlan of Galloway, was a legend in his own right. One of his chief achievements was defending Mann from the Norwegians. Imagine, being a Scottish Lord, Constable of Scotland, and bastard relative of the English monarchy and fighting an entire kingdom with just your men to defend a principality hardly anyone even remembers is on the map.

3:20 I believe my great to the power of X grandad said they reached a wee village called Portus Dubris (Dover for those who use modern languages). Apparently he reported that Alexander and Louis looked back at France and Alexander said "mark my words Louis, there'll be a tunnel between here and there in a few years time. If you can build the Cathedral of St Denis and we can build St Mungo's, if we can keep this lot under control, we'll be able to build that tunnel no problem", upon which Louis apparently shook his hand. Louis said that if it doesn't work out, their grandchildren or their successors should look at forming an alliance. Somehow, the English heard about the tunnel proposal and decided they didn't want Louis any more as a tunnel would mean the French could be in England too quickly and, well, you know their attitude to the French, don't you.

Good Evening , I'm Polish guy who loves history and accidentally living in Scotland last 18 years ;) I discovered your channel some time ago and I love your unorthodox approach to the history teaching, but i was quite stunned when i noticed in the begining of this episode painting from the battle which happen far away from Scotland and England in the country of my origins and 200 years later than the story you talking about in this episode.I'm wondering if it's some kind of mistake or hidden message? ;) The painting is called Banner of Liviv in the battle of Grunwald.Why I was thought about hidden message , because that city " Semper fidelis", belongs to Ukraine in todays time and its freedom is threaten again as it was 612 years ago . I hope it will emerge victorious again. Have a good evening, sir.

Interesting you mention the french. That was why the Norman's defeated the English king in 1066. Because William the conquerer believed he had been denied the English throne promised to him earlier. So the pattern of English broken promises had already begun at that stage. Still pretty scary to think Scottish soldiers made it so far south into England. Tough bunch the Scots were and still are. Could you imagine though being an English villager back in the day watching as thousands of Scotsmen with battle cry in their hearts marching towards you. I personally would be doing a runner.

Yes. The Normans, from Normandy, were settled Vikings- Normanorum in Latin. The most common prayer at the time was "A furore Normanorum libere nos, Domine." "From the fury of the Norsemen deliver us, O Lord." Not a bunch to be trifled with.

The 1215 magna Carter was annulled by the Pope. A second Magna Carter was brought into law after John's death under the guidance of William Marshall. Curiously a lot of the stuff related to the 'lower orders in society' was left out of the second charter. The copy in the US of A is, I believe, the second charter.

LOL,'the sneaky b*****d died'!🤣.Which is why John has the nickname of 'Lackland',he lost territorial control everywhere in such a short space of time from Northern England to the extensive Angevin/Plantagenet lands overseas in France(but never knew about the Siege of Dover,until now)!
@shelleyphilcox4743
@shelleyphilcox4743 Жыл бұрын
John was called Lackland before this. The Angevin empire was promised in each seperate part to the eldest sons...so Henry the Young King was to get England, Normandy, Anjou and Maine, Richard was to inherit Acquitaine and Toulouse, and Geoffrey was to get Brittany...and there was not anything to leave to John, hence John Lackland. Henry carved out pieces of territory from the empire to give to John, but that really made Eleanor and Richard, who was to inherit it from his mother, angry, as it was high handed and Henry the Younf King was also irked that his father might be taking important Territories and redistributing based on who his favourites were. John was also told that he could have lands in Ireland if he could take the territory and hold it. Originally it may well have been the intention for John to go to the church as many younger sons did, but that clearly wasnt going to happen, However, as all his older brothers died, he became the heir because his mother, Eleanor, backed him to be made King over her grandson Arthur, child of Geoffrey who was Duke of Brittany through marriage to Constance when Geoffrey had an accident and died. Arthur eventually disappeared under John's 'care'. He did however lose most of the Angevin Empire and eventually Englands barons stopped backing him and he died fleeing the consequences. William the Marshal, married to Isabel of Struighil, then held the country together as regent till John's son reached his majority. William Marshall was a very impressive man politically and militarily...interesting life!

As always it is not the English people who had a particular dislike of the Scottish peoples ,although these days the idea is widely promulgated, but the usual infighting between the Gentry land owners of both nations created the scenario for hatreds to develop. Putin starts a war and the Russian people must follow ,in those days when a noble ,king or otherwise started a violent disagreement ,it was the people who HAD to fight and who suffered whether they liked it or not. Nothing has changed Politicians get on their high horses and we the people pay the price either in war or Taxes.

Just an idea for a new film, and it might cost a bit of travel. I'm talking Goth culture, and I don't know all the places, but let's start with one. Goth comes from the name Gothenburg, and is a very Scottish thing. It was pups started around mining facilities, but since back then, you got your weekly pay in a bag, and many men would turn them in to liquid. Of cause the owners of the mines would not like that, and since most coal was exported to Sweden, they took back a part of the culture. This is called spritbolaget, a system that limits how much alcohol you can buy. All the pups were named Gothenburg, and feel free to correct me, but I think there were 14, and there are still 7 left, but most have other names. I just want to point one out, and that is the Gothenburg in Prestonpans. The sealing has the history painted on the ceiling, but I have no clue how to read it. I can tell you a bit about the local mine, and the hidden areas, but you will find this pub interesting, just for the sealing. I like your videos, and I know a bit about the mining and where the Goth culture came from, and it's mostly from Prestonpans, not Whitby as some might belive. Goth is more Scottish than English. Keep up the good work :)

That's a good point. If, technically, Normandy / English occupied France at the time of Henry V and Joan of Arc is considered to have been part of England then should it have been the Scottish army fighting for France at that time that should get the prize for getting the furthest south?

If you notice the account name won't be Scotlandhistorytours, but they'll use my avatar picture. I've seen them do this on several accounts. I don't get notified of what comments appear on your comments, so there's no way of me tracking and policing it without checking every single comment on a regular basis to see if a scammer has replied to a comment. Haha, i think the British & English didn't like the Norse Normans too much, who had invaded at Hastings in 1066AD. It looks like they resented William the Bastard Conqueror and yearned for their natural unalienable Common Law system that King Alfred the Great had helped to restore with the assistance of Bishop Asser of St. Davids in modern day Pembrokeshire. The mythical Robin Hood and his band of merry men were possibly based on real characters who were lawful 'rebels' and who were opposed to Norman treachery & Tyranny and worked to help restore the natural unalienable Common Law Constitutional principles of England and Britain, which led to the writing & sealing of Magna Carta 1215 with it's notorious Great Constituional Security & Restoration Clause - Article/Chapter 61. Now that's a juicy story.
@alicemilne1444
@alicemilne1444 Жыл бұрын
I think you may be mixing a few things up there. Alfred the Great of Wessex and Bishop Asser lived in the 9th century, a good 150 years before William the Conquerer arrived in England. You may possibly be thinking of the Danes who had invaded and subjugated certain kingdoms in England (Mercia and East Anglia), and imposed the Danelaw on them. One of those Danish kings was Cnut, known in English as Canute (because the "cn" sound is difficult for English people to pronounce). Robin Hood is an English figure. It is very doubtful if he had anything to do with the Magna Carta. That's a myth made up later. The Robin Hood legend probably started in York. None of that has anything to do with "Britain", as there was no political entity known as "Britain" then. And it certainly had nothing to do with the law, constitutional or otherwise, in Scotland as Scottish Law was based mainly on Roman Law at the time. I remember as a child back in 1965 when the whole of the UK got a bank holiday to celebrate the Magna Carta, and we in Scotland were saying, what has this got to do with Scotland. We enjoyed the day off anyway.

@@alicemilne1444 thanks Alice, sorry, i could have written what i did better or more clearly. When i said about the British & English people that were alive between the Norman & post-Norman times from 1066 & 1215 who may have been yearning back to better times, that may have gone back 250 years or so, back towards the time of King Alfred the Great, .. hope that makes it sound a bit clearer about what i was intending to express. Much appreciation.

P.s. I think Britain was a known entity back then as the Romans & Greeks, .. described these islands in their own language, as we would perhaps describe them now as the British Isles and the largest island as Great Britain? Mercia, Wessex, Powys, Gwynedd, Northumbria, Pictland, Scotland, .. were all transitionary kingdoms on Great Britain and at times it is claimed that there were agreed High Kings of Britain.

@@sovereignjoe5730 The problem with the terms Britain, Great Britain, and the British Isles is that they have been used at different times over the millennia to mean completely different things. Mostly, they have been used for political spin. And the various histories that used the terms have to be taken with a very large pinch of salt as they were following political, ecclesiastical or imperial agenda. I personally don't think it's a good idea to mash all that up into one big stew.

Ah Bruce, the furthest South the Scots invaded was much further south of that wee village London. Now the English would delude themselves that they colonised new Zealand, but we know better. The capital of the great southern land was always meant to be Dunedin (the Southern Edinburgh), it's just that the Australians could'na accept our terms. They split off into a country we call West island (we are taking it back for the original inhabitants as I write). Still, to this day, the citizens of Otago continue to wage war on the English usurpers on the rugby field ( they rather unsportingly refuse to allow shields and claymores when we repulse the Aucklanders).
