It would be nice to hear this on the G string, especially for this violin.

True. The only thing is that it would only show the g string. :). I should probably have done both.

I want to learn violin so bad, seems really fun. I've been playing guitar and harmonica for about 13 years, do you know how I can get started in playing the violin (other thank obvious "get a violin")?

Hello! which brand of strings are you using? Which violin is better, this one or the Yamaha v5 for an advanced student? Is either of them good enough for a professional? Thanks in advance!!
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 8 жыл бұрын
It's always a question of the individual instrument and not so much the brand and article number but my money would be on the Scott Cao. Regardless of which you get, we make sure they are set up and adjusted properly and I test each one before shipping. :)

Fiddlerman, I have a suggestion. You sound too good on all the violins. You make the $100 one sound amazing. So I can't tell the difference between a low priced or a more expensive. What about letting an average player play in the videos maybe after you, to get an idea of how a fumble fingered player like myself would sound.
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 9 жыл бұрын
Hmmmmm. Good idea but not very practical. :) Thanks for your compliment and idea. BTW, I only review the ones that I like. I test far more violins that I don't like. I don't see the sense in making reviews about bad instruments.

It doesn't take long to tune your ear to tell the difference between low quality, medium, and high(maybe not the subtle differences between two of a similar quality.) As far as the difference in how it sounds in the hands of someone less talented than fiddlerman, that really shouldn't matter because the difference is in ability, and he is demonstrating the maximum the instrument is capable of, not what you can expect to produce with it. No instrument is going to make a player who is inexperienced, or doesn't practice, sound noticeably better so showing the difference in how an amateur sounds on two different violins seems to me that it would be pointless, it doesn't show you the real quality of the instrument, nor will it ever clearly show how much better twinkle twinkle sounds on a 3000 violin vs a 300 one. A better instrument could be potentially easier to play, however fiddlerman wouldn't carry an instrument that was actually difficult to play due to poor setup.)

hzuiel I play and own a fiddlerman violin. Very fine instrument for the money, but it sounds different in my hand then listening to it thru a small speaker in my netbook. Also my bow makes a difference in sound. I play irish and prefer Prim strings, so the fiddle is not the same as when i purchased it. In short, any little change effects sound and playabilty.
@hzuiel
@hzuiel 9 жыл бұрын
Tom will Well i can't comment on a small netbook speaker. When i selected my instrument I listed through decent headphones to get an idea of how the instrument resonates and it's tone because that's the one thing you can't really changed much. Sometimes a better fitted sound post can open up an instrument, but for the most part, if you buy a violin that doesn't resonate well, you will never change that because it has to do with selection of wood and how the luthier graduated the top and bottom plates, and how it was constructed. Besides the obvious, there are also some subtle differences from this, like how easily the violin can switch notes when playing quickly. An instrument that has too thick of wood, or a bad selection of wood, resists vibrating to the frequencies of the note and so it takes a fraction of a second to get with the program and may never quite carry the frequency properly, which can mean very poor sound on fast pieces. That's not something that changes depending on who is holding the violin, or what bow, strings, etc you use. For the most part, the type of stuff you are talking about is what i meant by subtle differences, like if you played a two clips for the average player, both the same instrument and player, but with different bows or strings, a lot of people might not even be able to tell the difference or discern which was "better." If fiddlerman had a most novice player come in and play an instrument, all you'd really be hearing is novice violin playing, I don't think anyone but an expert would glean anything from it. As far as very specific music types, if you have any specific requirements, that needs to be accounted for in the selection of instrument and it's construction. A luthier might actually make a violin different based on the type of music a player intends to use it for, and the only way you'd know if a violin is going to be right for irish music, or anything else, is either to play it yourself, or to have someone that knows try instruments for you, or a luthier customize an instrument for your play style. If you contacted fiddlerman and said i plan to play this certain type of music, I'm sure he could come up with a list of violins that seem to have the right qualities for that application, but generally speaking, most instruments, even if they sound a bit different with a different bow or bowing technique, the actual thing to pay attention to in the video is the tone and resonation of the instrument. For instance the erwin otto that fiddlerman sells is very dark sounding. Certain types of music actually go well with that type of violin.

I am a music scholar and author of music books and want to support Fiddlerman in his deserved focus on vibrato, the world's best musicians are unanimous in expressing that control of vibrato is an absolute must for any trained musician...and one of the key skills required to play music. A trained professional can usually quickly determine the skills of a player by listening to their vibrato alone.

Which would you recommend: a Scott Cao 850 or a GCV Cremona Replica?
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 9 жыл бұрын
Super close. I would say that they are extremely equal. If I were to choose I would probably go with the GCV replicated violin. Also, it depends on the particular instrument as they differ slightly from one to another.

@1stfiddlerman

Ariel Perez It's of course better to be able to vibrate when and how much you want. However, it's great to be able to be expressive without vibrato at times. It's like a color, you don't want to use the same color or amount of color all the time. :)

Fiddlerman, I was wondering if I could get your personal preference. My instrument has always sounded quite muffled and quiet no matter what tone productions I use, no matter how much dynamics I apply, and no matter how much of the bow I use. Between the fiddlerman soloist and the august kohr hc622, which one do you think sounds the best? Which one sounds the clearest? Which one echo's the most? I'm curios because the kohr doesn't have any reviews on it and I don't know what it sounds like. I'm looking to get which ever has the best acoustic sound to it so I can apply a barcus berry 1320 to it.
@1stfiddlerman
@1stfiddlerman 9 жыл бұрын
The soloist is a fantastic instrument suitable for professional use and is very powerful as well. Made in the renowned GCV workshop who has won 2 silver metals in tone and quality. I vote for the soloist but when you talk about echo, understand that this is a factor of your environment. Play a fiddle in a bathroom or church and you get a lot of reverb but play the best violin in the world in a bedroom with carpet floors, a bed and curtains, and it will sound dead. Most people use added reverb on their recordings which is probably what you are thinking of.
@ryanpvw
@ryanpvw 9 жыл бұрын
Fiddlerman, in that case I'll go with a Fiddlerman soloist violin with a barcus berry 1320. My old violin in general no matter what environment always has sounded muffled. I'm just scared of purchasing a mirror image of my old violin. I guess what I meant by echo is less muffled, most lively and least dull.
