Trust me, there's some absolutely sick modern music that kicks so much ass it will make your head spin, but most of the time you won't hear it if you're not looking for it. Check some of the Doom channels on YT if you like fuzzed out and bluesy, or try getting into something new, like maybe some King Gizzard. They have enough albums out that you'll probably find one that you really like the sound on, for the most part theres only a couple of small sets of albums that sound similar (FMB, K.G., and L.W. are a 3 album set and feature microtonal instruments). Just for a goof play the title track for Fishing for Fishies, then play Planet B from the album they put out right after that. Don't be afraid to ask for stuff to look into from experienced "x-heads" Stay away from anything metal besides Heavy Metal (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, and Dio are some prime contenders to grow an appreciation for good metal, Rob Halford and Ronnie James Dio are two of the best metal singers of all time. Ozzy is more iconic, but there are more impressive metal vocalists), and when you're ready to move past that I would do a little research about a subgenre to get a vague idea of the premise, then you can jump right in! I assumed metal is not to your tastes if you're listening to this, I'm sorry if that's not true. I'm a better resource for metal culture than hip hop culture, but for the most part if you wanna get into hip hop, start with Illmatic, hands down one of the best hip hop records of all time, and some excellent East Coast rap. For West Coast obviously Pac, Snoop, (Nate Dogg, rest his soul is a phenomenal singer and MC but it's way nastier than this, but has some amazing R&B) and from there it's Wu-Tang Forever. Hip Hop's origins lie in funk and disco, but the late 80s and the 90s will forever be a golden age in Hip Hop history, and lets be real, the super early stuff is corny as hell, but still important and impressive; they were inventing a genre. That's about all I can say with confidence about hip hop, and do not have time to go down the metal rabbit hole with you here. Good luck, and find some kick ass tunes!

I received the shock of my life when I learned the singer's name and saw him for the first time. I had thought all along that it was a female singing. Now I'm still confused. Scott Grimes is a masculine name, right?
