One of the thing to consider about Scott's decision to prioritize his job, despite hating it, over talking with Ramona right away is how "un-Hollywood" that is. Movies and TV are filled with people putting relationship drama over practical living. Sure, that's important sometimes, but more often, personal life has to wait until the work day is over. In looking at this, it occurs to me how the video game aspects of this world fit in. Scott's been living the life of a Player Character. He doesn't really see others as important and his living off Wallace is kind of like how you just steal stuff in video games. You just care about the quest, in this case getting with Ramona. Now he's seeing other things besides his immediate wants. It's clear, even just from watching the reviews, that emotional maturity is at the heart of this series. Despite his age, Scott is clearly still a child at the beginning. I think someone needs to make a mini-series to do this justice.

So some additional Toronto context for the story: 1. Eating out all the time is a very, very Torontonian thing, about half the buildings in Toronto are restaurants. 2. Calling Sneaky Dee's a tex-mex place is a bit of a misnomer, a more apt description would be a bar/concert venue that just so happens to sell great nachos. Its inclusion in the story seems to be this volumes Toronto landmark of the volume with past volumes including: Casaloma, Lee's Palace, Honest Ed's, Younge-Dundas Square, ect. This series is very, very,very Toronto.

He tries to better himself and become s better person while she stays the same and we get more glimpses of her true personality.

@charleshockenbury353

I do want to comment that it’s okay to relate to a, let’s say “complicated” character to put it nicely. Empathy and recognizing traits and opinions in other people, even if you don’t like them, is just human. What’s more important is you recognize if those common traits are good or bad. You can understand where someone is coming from without endorsing that view point. For example, both you and Scott not having a fondness for the food service industry isn’t that big a deal. I know you’re trying to apologize for some inappropriate behavior in your past, but you shouldn’t have to apologize every single time man. Also seems like Scott in the comic is suppose to be evolving, so at the very least it’s better you relate to him than the film version. So, to some up, you’re not a bad person if you like a bad person, just don’t hold them up as some role model and you’ll be fine.
@carlrood4457

I posted something similar on an earlier installment. A lot of people are still pretty immature well into their 20's these days. We've pushed back the age where we expect people to be self reliant and responsible.
@charleshockenbury353

@@carlrood4457 I just feel bad that he keeps getting upset every time he and Scott think alike. I just wanted to share some thoughts on the subject. He shouldn't get so worked up about it (admittedly it's scripted and it probably doesn't bother him that much, but clearly he's a little ashamed at their similarities).
@fat1fared
@fat1fared 5 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think one needs to take two things into account. - First, compartmentalising: two people having similar experiences in things such as working in the food industries does not suddenly mean they are the same person. You can be similar to people in one way, but still different in others. - Second, growth: most people are pretty dumb when they are teenagers, and everyone makes mistakes. The key point is that they learn and grow from these mistakes, and show true remorse and humility to anyone who got hurt in the process. However, if one spends the rest of their life defining themselves by and apologising for their past mistakes, they cannot do this because they cannot move forward. It was actually my favourite part of this story, the concept around moving on from past mistakes/relationships. Both Scott and his ex partners, and Ramona and her ex partners, all failed to move on from their past mistakes in their previous relationships, and it was this which stunted their growth as people. It was only the ones who were able to move on 'together' who were able to move forward.

Lisa has ALWAYS been my favorite character of the whole series and her inclusion in volume 4 is just as crucial to Scott’s personal growth as prioritizing a job over romance or being a good, responsible friend. Lisa acts as an intriguing foil to Ramona, both to show what a “healthier” romantic alternative she could be, as well as helping Scott overcome some of his more toxic tendencies rather than mirroring them.

That "TexMex place" is another real Toronto landmark. Sneaky Dee's has the most iconic nacho dish in the city (though whether it deserves honor this is HIGHLY contentious) and is an indie music hub that caters exactly to bands around the level of Sex Bob-omb as a venue for some of their "larger" shows like for album release parties. It's another fantastic example of O'Malley integrating the city in a very natural and realistic way, as it's exactly the type of place that group would go to catch up with an old friend.

This character development is the problem I had with the movie. Scott is always Volume 1 Scott in the film so he has to react to everything like Volume 1 Scott, who is the worst Scott. There's no time for him to become Volume 6 Scott so he stays Volume 1 Scott until the very end when he becomes this weird amalgamation of Volume 1 and Volume 6 Scott.

I would not say that he does not grow at all, but he does so much more rapidly (aka in the space of a few days in-story, and in the space of about 10 minutes in the running time). I had a problem with that too, but my main grievance is how the Roxy and Katayagi twins story arcs were handled in the movie, to the extent that I wish they had cut out the twins entirely and lowered the number of exes to 5. They felt like such a rushed afterthought existing inorganically just to fit the “7 evil exes” mold, and that time could’ve been used to flesh out volume 4 more.

I would say that Scott's character as a whole is pretty different in comics and movie : Comic Scott is a moral coward and a manchild, but he is still kind of a braggart and at ease with himself (like a teenager). This is also my favorite volume! Partly because of Ramona's and Scott's relationship development as well as the development of the other/newer characters, the all out hilarity, and the fact that the fact that there are multiple LGBT+ people is treated like it's a normal thing by pretty much everyone (which it is, but not a lot of media especially back then used to depict the world as such).

It was called A Little Bi-Furious. I probably should have put a time-marker, so it was more obvious.

Ok small nitpick on the review at 2:28 you call it a roof girder, it's a bar joice rafter ( Sorry i'm a steel erector / ie I build both structural steel buildings like this and to a greater extent pre engineered steel buildings ), like I said it's a dumb nitpick but I had to say something. I figured Roxie becoming small animals was a sonic reference, or am I missing something ? Anyhow another great review all said please keep up the great work !

Roxy burst into animals in the comic because in the original Sonic the Hedgehog games you free animals from Robotnics pods at the end of some pages. This fits in for the title card at the beginning of the comic

Loving these. I thoroughly enjoyed the comics and the movie, and your analysis just goes to prove that Scott Pilgrim would have been better done as a six part series rather than a single movie. So many extra things had to be cut, which was a shame, and the realisation of his own douchyness is far more rewarding in the comic.

as a weirdo who read the comics first because i basically lived in the library, i have to say i really loved the beginning of the movie but what killed it for me was that the bunny scen wasnt included, i remember when i first read it and saw knifes dad pet a bunny i literally said out loud "thats fucking adorable" since it made such an impression on me i wouldve loved to see it in the movie.

12:17: That's KIND OF set-up by the title page. Remember, Eggman's robots use animals for their intelligence in Sonic games up until Sonic Adventure 2.
