As someone who has been to Honest Ed's, the madness experienced in Honest Ed's is highly accurate. The glaringly bright lights, literally hundreds of Elvis busts staring at you from every available surface, the spooky clocks from a production of Into The Woods (Honest Ed was a theatre impresario) the labyrinth of stairs and bargains that put Ikea to shame... the horror, the horror! Also, there really is a pizza place across the street.

+rmsgrey Well it's a slight retcon obviously, but take it as two different processes... Scott could IMMEDIATELY and with no other penalty respawn where he was killed... while usually you'd go back to the last safepoint or whatever and go back to your XP and LP you had there... so any won points from the last couple of days since "saving" would be lost, just like being killed in a game with similar mechanics...

I never realised how much the film overwrites my memories of the comics, Edgar Wright makes the fights really punchy and memorable but the books have more going on set to pay off later, and they're each really good at their own thing.

I really do think that Scott Pilgrim would work well as an animated series, moreso than as a 90-100 minute film.

At least we have that Adult Swim short that adapts the flashback from volume 2. I still would love if some network would pick up Scott Pilgrim as an animated series, but I imagine the copyright situation with it is pretty complicated (which is probably why we'll never get to play the video game ever again).

tbh i loved the Honest Ed's part in the book despite not knowing about the actual store in Toronto, its very clear its the type of humour thats more fun if you actually live in Toronto. but the over-the-top absurdism of how they react to being in a discount store is pretty damn funny to me cause i can still relate to being in a discount store and just being kind of overwhelmed by cheap crap i don't need but low-key want

El Goonish Shive did a similar joke with Ikea uh i mean 'swedekia', likely with the Honest Ed's scene being an influence...or just a coincidence. But yeah the scene is more important to the overall plot as it gives Todd SOME depth and foreshadows some reveals later on.

The building Knives is sitting on is in Yonge and Dundas Square, which is in downtown Toronto, is basically our version of Times Square. The ‘castle’ in the last episode is Casa Loma, a giant mansion designed to look like a castle (now a museum and event venue) near-ish to where the rest of the events of the film take place. The battle of the bands takes place at Lee’s Palace a music venue. Most of the locations in the book and movie are in or near a downtown neighbourhood called the Annex. It’s got a very young hipster vibe, Scott and co are pretty much the exact type of people you’d expect to live there, both 10 years ago and today.

Interesting how you brought up that volume three was the point where the series settled on so casually displaying the weirdness of its world, because now that I think of it, in volume one it's surprising how little of that actually factors into the story. There's Ramona's subspace highway sure, but other than that, the fighting game/anime physics of the Patel fight seem to come out of nowhere with little foreshadowing, and the only fantastical elements other than that are Ramona offhandedly mentioning once knowing a guy with Morph Ball powers, and snow melting as she skated through it (which could arguably be written off as a visual gag, rather than something literally happening in-universe).
@sarafontanini7051

honestly, I LIKE that it gets weirder. its set up early on that the world is just naturally bizarre and so it works when it gets weirder, AND it gives the story a unique feel to it.

I just discovered this KZbin channel the other day and I love it! I don't usually enjoy reviews but the combination of humor, nerdiness, and appreciation for nuance here are fantastic. I'm commenting on this video to see if I can help clear up the experience at Honest Ed's (a year after this video was posted... Sorry I wasn't here yet!). I'd never been to Honest Abe's, but I lived close to The Alley in Chicago when I was Scott Pilgrim's age and going inside was a very similar experience. Imagine your favorite movie/show/book/etc that's so bad it's good, now imagine you can walk around inside that so-bad-it's-good setting and BUY the stuff in there with your measly pocket change! Honestly that part of the book was one of the most relatable parts for me, and I was Scott Pilgrim for Halloween 2010.

Fancy library that you mentioned isn't really a fancy Library, but actually the Eaton Centre which is a mall that has a fancy bookstore Call Chapters which is also related to Indigo. No because of the simplistic style of the comic you could mistake it for a fancy Library. Though being the most expensive part of Toronto and taking up four stations in downtown Toronto no one could really have two floors unless they have at least 2000 customers. Being closer to Lake Ontario is one of the most expensive places to be. At least when I was between 7 to 20 years old.
