While I could be an impulsive piece of shit and say that the sub is better like I do with most anime or Japanese products in general, I straight up cannot say that since for once, the sub and dub are equal quality to me. It’s also why I started to try not to care as much about people's opinions on subs and dubs. If you like the sub better, that's fine. If you like the dub better, that's fine. If the general consensus leans onto one or the other, that's fine. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and I shall respect those opinions as long as mine are respected back. That being said, I don't actually have a proper opinion of either the sub or dub since I haven't watched the show at all yet due to Netflix being a piece of shit, so uh yeah 😁

I honestly love both. JP version feels like they emote more in-character to me, but EN has funnier deliveries because they sound like how normal people talk. (Real Japanese speakers don't talk with the intonation and stresses you hear in anime, but the English version I can totally see two real people talking like this)

Haven't watched the Japanese dub, I watched the Latin American Spanish dub where all of the characters (save Lucas) are voiced by the same VAs who dubbed their live-action counterparts and since all of them have lots of experience at dubbing anime and other media they sounded very natural in their roles, perhaps even more so than the live-action dub

I think the issue here is that most of the English cast aren't voice actors. Having everyone from the movie reprise their roles is great in theory, but many of them lack experience with conveying emotions solely with their voice, and it shows. Roxie's English VA actually IS a voice actor, and the difference between her and, say, Ramona, is staggering

I think it's because 99% of western watchers can't actually understand Japanese so they think it sounds good no matter what. Not hating on the JP actors but it just means viewers can't actually judge them to the same degree as English actors.

i actually really like the english VAs - even though the japanese voice acting is incredible here, it feels like acting. they definitely lean into it, which sounds natural if you're used to anime, but it's meant to be very much that - animated. the english voice acting feels much more grounded, and the flashy action sequences aside i do really enjoy the parts of the show that feel grounded and remind me of totally mundane stuff about the early 2000s, and having the voices feel like very normal people talking the way they might in reality worked for those scenes. i feel like the japanese compliments the flashier parts of the show. so they each suit the animated show in their own ways, imo.

@@ivanwong1968 yeah, it was the opposite that happened with Yashahime, I mean, the Inuysaha anime was dubbed into Spanish in Mexico, but Viz Media, who are the ones who handle the distribution, decided to dub it sequel series in Argentina, even the original Inuyasha cast was disappointed since they were open to reprise their roles. And something similar happened with the Rebuild of Evangelion movies, when Amazon got the rights for the fourth movie, they decided to redub the first three in Argentina alongside with dubbing the fourth film, despite the fact that all Evangelion anime were dubbed in Mexico, including the first three Rebuild films, but they at least kept the VAs for Shinji, Rei, Asuka and Mari, who recorded their lines remotely Sidenote: I found it amusing that there're some Evangelion references in the Scott Pilgrim Anime (like a poster and the AK Field), since some of the Neutral Spanish dub cast has had roles in the EVA franchise, i.e: Circe Luna, who voices Envy Adams, voices Rei Ayanami, while Gaby Ugarte, who voices Knives, also voiced Rei before, but just in the Animax redub. Santiago Florentín, who voices Ken Katayanagi, voiced Aoba in the Amazon version of the Rebuild films. Sebastián Castro Saavedra, who voices Kyle Katayanagi, voiced Ryoji Kaji in the Amazon versions of Rebuild as well, but Kaji's original Mexican VA, Enrique Cervantes, is also present in the show voicing both the announcer and Nick Frost's cameo as a security guard in ep. 4 and 8

Now that I’m watching this, the Japanese dub often seems to fit the character animation better. It actually almost seems like, even though the English script came first, Science Saru animated it with the Japanese dub in mind (or as their direct reference, if it was recorded first). I can’t totally tell, but I guess it’d make sense if that’s how it went, since most of them probably don’t speak English.

Nah it's not because the studio animated with Japanese in mind, but because the Japanese dub cast are all professional voice actors, while the English cast are all screen actors who were picked because they played the roles before rather than experience with animation. Don't get me wrong it's cool they got the original cast but voice and screen acting are very different skillsets, which is why the JP cast are able to match their performance to the animation while the eng often sound mismatched.

i think its a different experience, like with japanesse its just like watching a comedy anime, and with eng dub its like watching the animated version of a scott pilgrim comic. funny enough, both are correct, but its just a different feeling. The only thing i like more about one dub than the other is jules voice in japanese, while i didnt hate english one, it was often times just too monotone imo

Honestly the best english dub VAs were Roxy, Gideon and Lucas. Ramona, Kim and Wallace were also pretty good.

As person that fluctuates between sub and dub. Both versions are fuckin solid. Dub has nostalgia factor and the voices we are familiar with, sound natural at this point, the actors aren’t experienced VA’s so there were awkward dub moments but they were few and far between such as the combat scenes but the cast already knew their characters and each other which makes it less awkward. The actors voicing them did a great job despite their inexperience in Voice Acting. The Sub version is great to, it doesn’t feel awkward to listen to our dear Scott and Ramona speak Japanese, it feels natural. The Sub version does a great job meshing the Japanese voices and despite the Japanese VA’s having more experience than our English Cast, it doesn’t overshadow them with better voicing such as combat grunts and emotional moments. The Sub version is amazing in it’s own right. At the end of the day, it entirely up to the viewer if they want to hear the original movie cast voicing our heroes one more time or to feel the full anime experience with an equally amazing Japanese voice cast

Because most Seiyuu/JP VA must know how to sing. That's why they have great voice and most Anime have OST from their Seiyuu

It's because JP studios take animation seriously, while English studios still see it as kids media even when the program is clearly meant for adults.

I would disagree with that front, but because this adaptation was made in japan first, the Japanese audio sounds stronger and less forced at times while the english dub, despite being a piece of americana, looks and sounds off key. Kinda makes me wish that the adaptation would be american of they were gonna be this off at times. The only thing the eng dub has going for it is that the characters are vocally accurate to the comic, so to speak.

Both version of the "Stacey, I'm taking my fifteen" scene are amazing for their own reasons (3:38) The English audio sounds amazing because it sounds like two people having a somewhat-heated argument over an over-abundance of break-times (3:48) The Japanese audio sounds like they actually just fucking hate each other and are going at each others throats, hoarseing their own throats in the process, just pure fucking rage it's beautiful

To see the Chinese Canadian Knives to be dubbed in Japanese is cool in its own right. Its like. There was already some culture crossing just with Knives family (Mr Chau in the comics and the game) and in there being a Japanese dub to the show at all. So. This is kind of a cuktural three way? I kind of love Michael Cera's acting. He's just overacted enough that he fits right into an anime. Anime is always a little over-the-top with voice acting, in both Japanese and English. So I love that he's a lot less subdued compared to everyone else. You can't beat Mae Whitman, though.
