"mid-shelf" what's that even mean? Like if it means more niche games not everyone knows, that doesn't make sense. In a store they'd put the big name games on the middle since it's at eye level.

Saying a game "belongs on a gamecube in the best way possible" is honestly one of the greatest compliments that I think can be given to a game. There was something so unique and fresh about that era of videogames that I think you phrased perfectly: "It feels like the games had to wow the audience, and not just coast by on a name they know," and I definitely think that's something current gaming lacks, especially if you look at stuff like the mario spin-offs or even Animal Crossing tbh.
@rheyn8356

The Gamecube comment is honestly super accurate, ever since I first saw cutscenes of Hi-Fi Rush, it reminded me of Viewtiful Joe, not just for the art style but the endearingly corny writing that just screams love for the artform, whether it's superhero movies or rock music.

The GameCube era is a great analogy, because even those well known IPs on it were trying new things. Meteoid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine, Wind Waker, etc felt like they were really pushing the boundaries and trying different things out. I feel like we had a 'big bang' of sorts in that GameCube/PS2 era, then it slowly started collapsing in on itself with the Wii and PS3. Then again, that's mostly for the big studios and IPs, the indie sphere has been crushing it and is the prime place to look if you want games that try new things, push boundaries, and feel like full purchases from day one.

I got so disappointed by the bomberman that released on switch because I was used to ones like bomberman max and generations where there was a story. Instead we got a remake of original bomberman that felt like 'only the shrines' from botw at the time in a way. Puzzles and such but no actual meat to the game :c

This video made me realize that, yeah! The reason games just don't click with me anymore is because they rarely come out finished. Hi-Fi is probably one of my favorite games at the moment because there's nothing to WAIT for, there was nothing TO wait for in the first place with the shadowdrop which just makes it incredibly special. It brought me back to a time where games didnt feel commercialized and like they wanted to milk you out of all of your money; this game just wants you to play it and have a really good time doing so.

As someone who was a big fan of NSR when it first came out, when I played this game I honestly thought that this is the game that NSR *should* have been. I still like NSR (except the community), but in all honesty the "rhythm" aspect for that game was more so just to assist you in dodging and parrying boss attacks (in which the beat is still hard to identify imo). Meanwhile Hi-Fi RUSH has rhythm apply to EVERYTHING, and the beats are easy to identify. Plus, the platforming segments in between the combat sections were pretty enjoyable compared to the approaches in NSR. That, and HFR just has a lot more content. I don't know what else to say that wasn't already in the video; I like No Straight Roads, but I *love* Hi-Fi RUSH.

Another thing I love is that the story just starts when you start the game. No elaborate backstory or super long intro to explain the world - you just know you're a guy who wants to be a rockstar. The story unravels at a good tempo, too. Be prepared for an *incredibly* difficult true final boss fight, though. After you complete the game, there's a set of challenge rooms that unlock the final battle and MAN it's rough. Chai really has to give it his all in that fight.

For those who like Hi-Fi Rush, you should check out No Straight Roads! Its play style is similar, with a wonderful art style and banger music to go with it. Metronomik, the developers of NSR, enjoy this game a lot too. Both are great games, and I love them both dearly :)

I first discovered the game via a randomly recommended "all Bosses and Ending" video, what really ended up capturing me in that video was the Korsica boss fight, especially because I play an instrument myself.

The whole note of this feeling like a GameCube game is so accurate, it's got that experimental charm I love about a lot of more niche games from the 6th generation (Guitaroo Man, another rhythm game, comes to mind) that's sorely missed right now

Honestly I wasn't too sure about the game, it looked fun and I heard good things about it, but I was worried the rhythm aspect of it would make the combat feel clunky. After this though, (and hearing it's only 30 bucks?? Guys from the visuals alone this deserves the 60) I'm definitely giving it a look. Gotta support fresh ideas with actual love in them like this, ya know?

The best part of it all, is that the money spent on marketing could be channelled to game polish. If people like a game they'll willingly market for you themselves

As someone who’s almost 100% competed this game (All achievements, S crown rank on every level and difficulty, every purchasable and unlockable etc) This is one of my favourite games because of the references, the amazing art style, music and best of all it’s a really interesting and unique idea. The game is perfect for new players and people who love difficult games as there’s extra rewards for beating the game on the harder difficulty with all S ranks, The bosses are also very unique, all introducing a new ability that you can use in for the future. There’s even a mode after beating the game called the Rhythm Tower where you have a timer which goes down and you progress through more and more difficult floors as well as re-fighting every boss for a total of 60 floors and it’s also a great way to earn the currency used to upgrade powers. To sum it up, It’s a great rhythm game for both new and more complex players and if you have Xbox Gamepass it’s definitely worth a try

This game was perfect from start to finish. It was so nice to have a finished game that was just fun to play. It was quirky but in a fun way and seeing all the characters become close genuinely warmed my sad little heart. One of my favourites and the fact it was shadow dropped just shows the love that the creators put into it

This game was excellent and one of the best gaming experiences ive had in decades. It was just brilliant. It knows what it is, it knows that its silly and takes it in stride. It quickly joined my list of favorite games of all time. Just great, a breath of fresh air for this age of gaming.

Don't worry about the whole "side of sugar" thing. It was actually really nice to hear you so positive about a game and how much you enjoy it! A lot of times, yeah, it's fun to hear 'the big streamer' talk negatively about a game you have a lot of grimes with, too. But for good precious type games like this, I love to hear all of the good things you had to say!

I can only describe this game's visuals as 2000's galore 🌟 it's literally screaming Y2K to me and I feel so nostalgic looking at them because the art style is soooo similar to the 2000's Italian and French cartoons I used to watch as a kid ❤ just love this so much !

The stealth drop initially pulled me in to look at the trailer and that is what got me to at least try it out (PC Gamepass). I really expected some lightly put together backdrop of a plot to move the game along so we can do the rhythm game parts, but quickly realized that this wasn't just some rhythm game... it was an actual, fully fleshed out game that used rhythm mechanics. What amounts to a sort of tutorial (which is fun) is longer than most rhythm games are in their entirety. Phenomenal animations, vibrant colors, genuinely funny writing, and just all around fun gameplay makes Hi-Fi Rush a desperately needed breath of fresh air. The irony being a game that feels exactly like what is now an "old" style of game design feels fresh.

I'm loving this game. I'm not very good at rhythm games after just a couple of hours I was instinctively pressing the buttons in time to the beat and hitting the parry when I heard that distinctive sound effect of an incoming attack. The lack of a lock-on is the only flaw I can think of. Too often I'd summon Peppermint to shoot out an enemy's shields only to have her target the wrong enemy. Same thing for grappling and specials.
