great tip about this software. My main use is to archive videos on my cellphone. Which are way too big. This software makes it easier to compress them. But my main concern is preserving the creation date. For easy sorting. But when i ticked on "preserve metadata", the creation date wasnt preserved. It was on the date of the conversion. Any tips on how i can do this?

Dude, you are awesome! thanks so much for this. I have been using my Linux box and the compress application (which does an awesome job) to compress videos. I now use a restricted laptop, and I can't install things, and I don't want to go to the basement and convert files all the time on my Linux box. So I needed something to use on my work laptop. I was getting ready to use handbrake command line when I came across your video. WOW! what a time-saver I downloaded the portable version, and Shazam! done deal. thanks again.

Honestly I tried it and videos with same used codec are bigger than from Handbrake. Maybe video will decoding longer but in Handbrake outup will be smaller.

@1:46.When I select "auto" the program still used the CPU. I had to go to the advanced feature drop down and select Hardware Acceleration: Nvidia NVENC. When I started I could see the GPU was now being used.

Thanks Scott. I was having trouble getting 10bit 422 directly into Cyberlink Powerdirector and had successfully used Handbrake. I got errors with XDCAM but Apple ProRes worked great. In addition, the footage I shot was with an anamorphic lens, so I selected the 2.39 aspect ratio and it de-squeezed perfectly as part of the conversion.

COOL!. It's a front-End software program. Thanks for the tip!!! Downloading it now. I used to write FRONT-END software in the early to mid 20's like that, because any newby who bought a computer for the first time in those days didn't know what a command prompt was. In fact, I was too lazy to use command prompts myself, so I wrote VB programs and batch files for myself. I still use batch files today. It looks like it has an output "file size" calculator built in. For my ROKU Ultra most 90 minute 1080p movies look good enough for me when set at 1,200MB, on a 50" screen. But that's just my opinion and my bad eyes.

Hey Scott, this is very cool! And I like your simplified presentation. Can you tell me what video editing codecs you've used to create an alpha channel output that works in Camtasia?

Gord, I've got good news and bad news. Good news - there is a codec that works. It's AVI with alpha channel and no compression. The bad news. The only thing that I know that will create this codec type is After Effects. Here's proof the codec works. This is a link to the file files.catbox.moe/0r2k1b.avi

I tested your sample and it works in Camtasia! Does your response mean that you'd just create in AE with that codec output, and you wouldn't be using the Converter because the converter doesn't have that combo? My goal was to be able to get some of the more easily found/purchasable alpha channel assets but then convert them if they didn't work in Camtasia. That's the dream.

@@GordIsman Gord, I was in talks with Paul Pacifico who developed the software. He told me that this specific codec can not be generated by FFMPEG. You can imagine my disappointment. He told me that he did add a version that does the same thing with MOV but I've tested the codec and it's a fail on my end. You can see this addition in the "Function" pulldown. It's Listed as "Uncompressed" I could not get it to work. To this day I'm searching for an alternative. Do you have connections with the guys at Camtasia? When will they support the ability to create alpha channel? Any news on the street?

@@ScottFichter, I have connections but there doesn't seem to be a desire to address this issue. It's been something that Camtasia users have been upset about for a long time now. Also, I think the same issues don't exist for Camtasia on the Mac. Who knows what will be forthcoming?

Appreciate your share, Scott - pardon the noob question but is it weird that I don't have the 1:45 Set GPU decoding option in settings; it goes from End action radio button to Set scale mode. Is there an install mode or does the latest version not have this?

Hi, I'm trying to convert a h.265 MP4 video to a 2K vp9 mp4 but the colours are coming out less saturated, like an h.264 video, when I change it to 1080p the colours are closer to the original, anyone know what's causing the colouring to change and how I can turn it off? Everything else is fine otherwise.

Hey RichyzVlogs, What's the original size of the video? Are you scaling the video size up from 1080p to 2K? I wonder if the scaling is messing with the color. What would happen if you turned up the saturation in your editor, then re-encode the video again and then convert to 2K. Do you think the color would be better after the conversion. Give it a try. Also, I think there's a way to modify color in the software as well. Correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sending this message away from my office at the moment. I'd be interested in learning what you find out.

@@ScottFichter it's in 1080p and h.265, I'm only upscaling it to 2k since KZbin only allows vp9 on 2k and above videos but I can't understand what's causing the colours to change, that's a good idea, I could try saturating it in my video editor and seeing if it renders any differently on there as a vp9, I know I could just saturate the footage anyway but I feel that defeats the purpose of the h.265 colours being nice in the first place and it won't be natural. I was thinking it could be to do with what it's choosing to render as I set it to auto possibly, or some kind of setting somewhere but as to now I'm lost. But yeah I'll try some stuff out and see if I can figure this out. Thanks for the help 🙂

On Linux: Shutter doesn't seem to handle ISO files directly, whereas Handbrake does. And I can't figure out how to add an ISO after it's been mounted, either.

Yes, have you heard about the program FFMPEG? It's a super powerful command line video codec program that can do all kinds of stuff. Shutter Encoder is basically a interface that uses the FFMPEG engine. It's free try it.

handbrake would of taken me over 38 minutes at 23 rf quality. I checked this out. end up telling me it would take me 1 hr 10 minutes approximately. then realized oh yeah, had to enable the gpu cuda, nvec lol. dropped to less than 9 minutes. lol.
