I was once on a Delta Airlines plane bringing a fallen hero to Atlanta. When we landed, the pilot said, "Ladies and gentlemen, we have a VIP on board--a fallen military hero. Please wait to deplane until his casket has been offloaded. If you have a tight connection, rest assured the airline knows you are here and will hold the plane for you." The cabin was so quiet during that time that one could have heard a pin drop.

Thank you for the compassion & respect you & your fellow passengers showed to this fallen soldier. That is the way it should be Unlike the plane where the passengers were in an uproar over the delay. They have my utmost respect for doing a very emotionally difficult job and doing with the highest honor and care. To me, they are unsung heroes, along with the men and women who work graves registration and burial duty. The chaff is out of context here. They don't do that to make the flight look like an angel. That is (obviously) in case they are fired upon - so that they can evade live fire directed at the plane. However, it is the same plane used for the Angel Flights, and it is also used to transport troops (live ones), the plane itself is big, so the chaff used is large and puts out a beautiful pattern. The song is amazing, and the job of returning remains back home is taken extremely seriously. The casket will have an escort whose job it is to see the fallen soldier/sailor/marine or coast guardsman to his family, to then smooth out red tape and see him/her to the grave.

This is the east coast receiving center for US military remains. My cousin and his wife were crew chiefs and flew many missions bringing our sons and daughters home for the last time from the combat theater, or further on to their home of record for the last time. As a veteran this song hits home. So much so that it is one of only TWO songs I have ever downloaded (until 3 months ago we still had dialup) it was worth the 3 hour download time. I still tear up every time. The other song? Another one you'll love! A Soldier's Silent Night by Father Ted Berndt. (Himself a Korean war Marine) written by a US Marine in the 80's. The one thing I really do respect is when a soldier is assigned to be with one of his fellow comrades who has died they never leave them until they are buried and they are also there for the families to. You have to respect a soldier that is willing to be there for their fallen comrades because they don't do it just once they see family after family and the hurt that is in their eyes. I don't know if I could do that.
