The Italian Beef sandwich just might be Chicago’s greatest export. I know that my cat is obsessed with it-if I go to Portillo’s for a dog and fries for lunch, I always get a plain Beef for later in the day and make sure to give the cat several bites. She has been known to tear into the paper wrapping to get to the sandwich.

I’m not one to tell a person what to put on or not put on food, this case a hotdog but might I suggest you take the first bite of a specialty dog without adding anything first then add ketchup. A Chicago dog has SO much on it already, you’ll never taste what we taste if you add ketchup before your first bite. It’s one of my favorite hotdogs: Chicago dog which has pickle, pickle relish, tomato, mustard, onions, peppers, pepper and celery salt….and you’re going to top all of that flavor with ketchup? Taste it first, the way it was made and you might find it may not need ketchup. It’s like adding salt to a dish without first tasting that it even needs salt… you can always add salt/ketchup, but you can’t remove it afterwards. Just a thought. Great videos brother, glad you’re enjoying this fine country and its famous offerings! 😊

Every Portillo's had a different interior scheme. They all look like museums and are a great place to look around while you are eating. You should look at the history of Portillo's and how he started his hot dog stand. While you did find ketchup there some hot dog places in Chicago have NO ketchup, just mustard. Their chocolate cake is to die for, it's so good.
@juliettedemaso75882 жыл бұрын
My grandpa was the first customer ever at Portillos, it was a wee hot dog stand back then. Most locations have a picture of it up by the checkouts. My family are Portillos fiends, lol. And we eat ketchup, a fair bit of Chicagoans are full of bluster when they tell you they don’t 😉 The “Mustard only” rule is for the delicious Polish sausage “sandwich”, we just call it a Polish here. It’s on a sturdy bun or French roll with kraut or grilled onions or both. My family came here at the turn of the century, one side from Naples and the other “Scots Irish”, ancestry traced to Loch Lomond. Big welcome to Chicago, you’re truly initiated now! 🥰
@marksmith4892 Жыл бұрын
Hey Sean I'm the guy who recommended Portillo's to you when you created that video showing a small food truck making Chicago hot dogs en masse. I'm glad you liked it, I knew you would! The reason is that Portillo's, unlike most other hot dog places, load up their dogs with unique extras like cucumbers, tomatoes, the pickle, diced unique vegetables, corn, and a wide variety of other things so every dog you get is bursting with different flavors. I would occasionally travel a full hour (2 hours total) just to get some Portillo's, so good, imho. Now, while you are in Illinois, rent a car and travel down the Interstates to Springfield, Illinois and visit Abraham Lincoln's final resting place, the Abraham Lincoln Museum, and don't forget New Salem, the restored village where Lincoln lived during his formative years! You will see some incredible American history all over that area. It'll take about 2-3 hours to reach Springfield from Chicago by car. You will also see endless corn fields and bean fields which are uninteresting, BUT take note that Illinois is at the very core of our arable farmland so for purposes of understanding America you will see where all the food is produced.

By Wrigley Field (about 2 or 3 blocks north on Irving Park Rd) there's a fab hot dog joint called Byron's. They started the original "salad on a dog" hot dog. I haven't been there is ages, so I can't speak to the quality now. But before Portillo's, they were my go to & where'd I'd bring out-of-towners for a "Chicago Dog". After picking up the dogs, we'd head over the the lakeshore off Irving Park & look out over Lake Michigan. Good times. I love Portillo's french fries oh, I mean chips.

I have memories of hanging out in the parking lot during the summer, taking out portillos with my family. The first Portillos was in Addison, Illinois just about 10 miles away... It was a little white building, like a hot dog stand. I may have seen Mr. Portillo once or twice. He reminds me of a car dealer owner. Good memories. Dude while Chicago dogs are great, at some point you NEED to come to Cincinnati OH, where you can sample "coneys" which are hot dogs with chili, cheese, mustard & onions. Or try a "way chili" where a 3-way is spaghetti, chili, and cheese; or a 4-way which adds onions and/or beans; or a 5-way which is spaghetti, chili, cheese, beans and onions. A few places add jalapenos to a 5-way to make what they call a 6-way. Some places to consider are: Skyline, Gold Star, Fort Washington or Pleasant Ridge Chili - and of course there are a few others.

Much better than the Pink's at the entrance to Knott's. Everything else is excellent with good portion sizes. They have real malts!!! I don't know if this is something they have in Chicago but ours is one of the few fast food places that has tamales, one of my favorite things, and theirs are good (and cheap). Great ambiance with the 1920's gangsters & law enforcement themes everywhere. They even have food acceptable for fasting during Lent!! Ample seating and fast counter service. Go to North West Indiana and visit lake county jail where John Dillinger escaped with a wooden gun or Hammond In visitor center where the writer and narrower of a Christmas story grew up. Also by Indianapolis where James Dean grew up

Since you're trying hotdogs and currently in Chicago, swing down to Cincinnati and grab a chili-cheese coney from Camp Washington.

There are two types of hot dogs in CHI: Vienna Beef, and everything else. Always look for Vienna Beef.

Always try a hot dog or hamburger "as-is" BEFORE you add any condiments to them. Sometimes they're perfect "as-is". (Just because we have condiments on the tables here in America does NOT mean that you have to use all of them. If you want to, please do, but sometimes it can take away from the "as-is" taste of the food.)

A lot of people waste a ridiculous amount of time arguing over pointless food myths, like what are the proper toppings for a hotdog or what style of pizza is best, and on and on it goes. People! It's not a contest! IT'S ALL DELICIOUS! We all win no matter what we choose! 🌭🍕

I agree. Born and raised Chicagoan and have no issue with others putting ketchup on their hot dog. I do it at times since that's how I was raised (parents are immigrants where hot dog hot dogs -- bun and all -- isn't really a thing) and got use to it. Sometimes I do sometimes I don't. Whichever I'm in the mood.

Ketchup doesn't belong on a Chicago dog
@JDoors6 ай бұрын
@@druemancospr I wouldn't add it but I have no right to tell other people what to eat or how to eat it.

I can see a pickle in a hot dog. Being of German extract, ketchup is a crime on a hot dog. But you put what you like on it. You should try two identical hot dogs one mustard & one ketchup & you will know.

you need to go back to Seattle and try a Seattle Dog. definitely worth the trip.

Shaun, buddy, sure you can put ketchup on a dog, but you can also put gefilte fish in your ice cream. Just because you CAN, doesn't mean you ever SHOULD. 😮💨 Go Cubbies!
