Dalessandro's is in my old neighborhood! Their steaks helped me pass Calculus and Trigonometry in high school. I'm glad you got to visit Philadelphia! Seems like you had a great time. As for chopping the meat, I don't like if it's chopped too fine. The meat needs to have a little substance to it or else the meat flavor is lost in the cheeses, onions, etc. I like American or Provolone cheese, never whiz.

I give you credit for trying cheesesteaks from four different places. I grew up in the Philadelphia area and to be honest the first one looked the best to me because it looked nice and juicy, but I would never have went into that neighborhood. You always have to melt the cheese in w/ the meat. I'm not a wizz fan but prov or amer is the best. We had a a shop in Quakertown, "J's subs" north of Philly that made the best cheese steaks. I know its the 80's but you never had to ask for extra meat. That 1 sub they ate looked like zero meat. You could order a 12 w/ onions/mushrooms/cheese maybe marinara and pickles on top. Moved to FL. in the late 80's and found Buffalo wing company. They had wings from many places and had subs from 12 different cities. Owner was from Pittsburgh but alas all of the good ones disappear. Nobody in FL makes a good cheese steak except for yourself. Wizz comes in a can, I'll take sliced from the deli.

Cheesesteak should be chopped up, thinly sliced meat. Thicker chunks would be more a steak sandwich (with or without cheese), not an actual cheesesteak. Some places do a rough chop of the thin slices and some do a finer chop. I’m fine with either chop, but prefer provolone and a good amount of black pepper (no onions/peppers).

Angelo’s and John’s Roast Pork are my two go to cheesteaks. I’m a sharp provolone guy. My only beef with Angelo’s is they push Cooper sharp and made it a fad, I’d much rather have sharp provolone. They get very busy and don’t want to spend the extra time to allow provolone to melt. Ricci’s Old Italian would be a great option for an Italian hoagie among a lot of great options in south Philly. A Philly Roast Pork is my favorite. Tommy DiNic’s and John’s Roast Pork are both great. I will say this, they do need some kind of green on them. Peppers don’t hurt either. Rapini is the traditional green, but spinach can offer a better balance, tends to be more tender and allows the pork to come forward. That can be a point of contention for traditionalists along the lines of whiz versus sharp provolone, but at least between spinach and rapini, both are actually food and intended for human consumption. Philly is a great city, a great food town, there’s way more than just cheesesteaks worth checking out. Elsewhere in the comments someone mentioned returning for a Phillies game, that is a very good time and if it’s the right game at the right time, off the charts.

For me the deal breaker on a cheesesteak is whether it's been seasoned right. Doesn't matter if it's shredded or minced. Regular Fanta is sweetened with high fructose corn syrup. I'd rather drink the aspartame in a diet drink. Fructose is a nightmare. It really messes with cholesterol and a huge contributor to NAFLD (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). To each his own I suppose.

I love it when food-adventurers from other lands like you enjoy our many unique dishes. I think that American food is very much underrated in the wider world. That' because our food was terrible from 1930 (the Great Depression) thru 1991 (the end of the cold war). Those were lean times for us food-wise, but also a great period of immigration, when we were enriched by the cuisines of many immigrant cultures without realizing it. Then, since 1991, America began to focus on its own indigenous cuisine again, fusing it with our immigrant foods as well as our historic dishes, like your BBQ. And I think we've done this well. But the rest of the world hasn't realized this yet. But now, in 2023, I think that the USA has one of the most delicious cuisines in the world. Thank you for giving it a try.
@JohnCap5234 ай бұрын
To set the record straight: Most good Philly shops use Liscio rolls, not Amorosos. Most locals order with American cheese, not Whiz. The best (subjectively) are the chopped ones like Dallessandro’s. There’s no aspartame in regular American sodas, it is high fructose corn syrup instead of cane sugar. DiNic’s and John’s are the best pork sandwiches but it is imperative it is ordered with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe (John’s only does spinach). Pat’s and Geno’s are in fact tourist traps but the main reason to avoid them is they’re crap.
@b.slocumb7763 Жыл бұрын
I think the only way I’ve had a cheesesteak was with thin sliced meat that was at least a little chopped, and orange cheese that was possibly whiz but could have been the restaurant’s own version of whiz. But I’d always rather have a nice big sub sandwich or an oven fired pizza. Cheesesteaks always felt too heavy with limited flavors.

Philly cheesesteaks have onions cooked on a griddle (not fried), and do not have bell peppers at all. Fried onions & bell peppers is like saying sushi should have basmati rice & be dipped in ketchup.

@@bobsmith5185 - LOL. So sue San Diego for putting those on what THEY called a "Philly Cheese Steak" sandwich.
