Absolutely brilliant analysis as ever, thank you. This is the first one I’ve picked up early from Patreon. I’ve also noted an interesting correlation between the Scottish Mortgage holdings and those of ARC/Cathie Wood who you covered in an earlier video. Interesting to see how the 2 have fared with the significant drops in the likes of Illumina given the different fund structures... Thanks again.

Hello, thank you for this video, since much has happened in the two years since it was made could I ask if you would be willing to do an update on SMI? As a subscriber with alerts I'd be super keen to watch it as soon as it was made. Full disclosure is that I've been thinking of buying in. Since I respect your opinion so much it would be great to get your latest opinion before making the plunge. Thanks in advance.

i have just watched for the first time march 2021, very good analysis but if i had seen it (2019) would I have had so much in SMT over the past two years, that have doubled almost tripled in some older holdings-so glad I didn’t see this 2019 but very clear explanations! Also have a lot in Fundsmith too!!

A really insightful video, thank you. As an investor in Scottish Mortgage I have seen a huge return (having invested when the share price was at a discount to NAV), but I do worry about a spectacular crash down to earth. On the other hand, I rationalise that a crash will also take down trackers and the ongoing charge for this trust is pretty reasonable. Perhaps I’m kidding myself?! You mention its exposure to China, but it is selective in the companies it holds and surely an emerging markets tracker which indiscriminately holds Chinese
@Pensioncraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tahir, Scottish Mortgage is leveraged and high risk, there's no question of that. Its risk-adjusted performance isn't so great if you compare it with other popular and (currently) successful active funds such as Lindsell Train and Fundsmith as I show in this blog and video pensioncraft.com/fundsmith-lindsell-train-vanguard-value-which-best/. But I love the fact that they cut their management fee as they grew larger. That is, simply, wonderful. I also love their governance structure and their selections for people on their board. I appreciate that they are selective in their Chinese equity investments but this is still higher risk than developed market equity. Thanks, Ramin.

any chance for a video on RIET's with all the negative sentiment around stocks and rising interest rates are REIT's the place to be ?
@Pensioncraft6 жыл бұрын
Hi kindke, I've done a REIT video as part of my paid "Asset Classes for Investors" course pensioncraft.com/register/investment-for-absolute-beginners/asset-classes-for-investors/ The way I see REITs is as slightly-risker-than-equity high-income assets. However, with interest rates on the rise and growth worries that's not going to be a great environment for REITs. What might be interesting is to review a particular REIT. Did you have one in mind? Thanks, Ramin.

Great video! I love your videos. I have a question about investment trusts that I cannot find an answer too. How does one make money from an investment trust? If I have bought £100 in a investment trust how do I work out the rough return I will get a year for this amount? Is it measured in percent? Is it the yield or simply the fluctuation of the share price that I will make money from. I see all these figures of 500% increase over 10 years but I don’t understand if that’s due to dividends, share price increase or some sort of fixed return? I would love your help. Thanks
@oscarhirst91194 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that you are buying shares in the trust, which increase in value when the trust's assets grow in value. This happens when the share price of the companies that the trust has invested in increase, and when the trust receives dividends from the companies it has invested in. Another comment here mentions that the trust also pays a dividend to its shareholders. The share price of the trust could also increase if public demand for shares in the trust increase (but this increase may not reflect a real change in underlying value).

Thanks for the vid! I’m really interested in investing in this and a few others (such as their US/China/Japan growth trusts & Lindsell train). Do you have a video where you talk about recommended strategies for investing in managed funds? I don’t want to allocate too much to these high growth funds due to their risk, so am unsure of a way about diversifying between them?
@NedFlanders393 жыл бұрын
Exactly what i'm thinking. I'm in my mid 20s so i'm open to some risk. Was thinking doing an 80% global all cap index fund and then 20% in a managed high risk fund. Although i have no idea which one. How have you gotten on with your research etc?
@ryanmilner71695 жыл бұрын
Great video. As ever very insightful. I do love your videos but my only negative is your very risk averse for my liking. Your never going to make mind blowing returns if people follow your advice on the whole.
@Pensioncraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ryan, I don't give advice. Instead, I teach people how to make up their own minds about the level of risk they want to take. Mind blowing returns come with mind blowing risk which isn't appropriate for most people. But some PensionCrafters are very young and they tend to take higher levels of risk. Others aren't young but have significant defined benefit pensions so have a very high risk capacity and take higher levels of risk. I don't want people to copy me, my goal is to teach people how to be better investors whatever their risk appetite. Thanks, Ramin.

...banks is riskier.
@Pensioncraft5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tahir, you mean banks are riskier than Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust?
@tahir92785 жыл бұрын
Hi, my fat finger intervened! I meant that, if one is looking for emerging markets/Chinese investments, selective investment in the likes of Baidu and Tencent (SMT will have done their due diligence) is arguably less risky than indiscriminate exposure to an index that contains CHINESE banks. These are arguably opaque in their lending practices and who knows what ultimately lies beneath.

I like what I hear about this company; one thing I distinctly dislike about the company is its name; what an unfortunate and misleading name for a company investing heavily in USA and China tech companies like Tesla and Alibaba.. The name may have been routed in past history but I suggest a change of name is well overdue!!
@Pensioncraft4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mel I agree the name is misleading, but given the name of my company I can't really criticize Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust 8-) Thanks, Ramin.
