Barry I would say the blame is 50% Orihuela Costa but hopefully the new Council will get their act together. 40% is due to cowboy builders and 10% from the illegal tourist lets. In Punta Prima there are a few full time residents who do try and take care of the area. From Calle Escorpiones down to the Nautilus to the North is Torrevieja Council and to the South is Orihuela Costa and the difference is stark but they have made a start on some of the worst areas. The balancing factor is cost, the annual bill for the equivalent of UK Council Tax was 321 euros for a 2 bed Townhouse which is less than we pay a month back in Scotland albeit for a larger property. Hopefully with all the new developments and the influx of owners there will be more money for the services such as the bins. They have even started to sweep the streets regularly but I do wish we had a Motocaca like Torrevieja

I have 3 fincas but l pay a road charge of 8 euros a year for one, it is for the village council to send a grader once a year, it is not necessary and some years they do not do it, the road is always good, my other 2 fincas are not council roadways but all land owners drag the bladed roller when they pass. I do not have rubbish collection but my waste is very little so when I go to the village I put it in a bin, I do not need pay but as am a resident I pay 60 euros a year, I also can get free water and free drinking water too when I go to the town and have all government services at my disposal. Spain is a beautiful country and a nice place to live, if the channel owner thought different he would not be here.

Thanks for the informative video - good to have a reality check. Orihuela Costa is sometimes a bit of a sprawl, with one urb merging into another, so was difficult to identify some of the areas you visited. The council do have a dreadful reputation for provision of services. Where we have an apartment, ( Villamartin Plaza area) owners have organised cleanup groups, litter picks etc and it has certainly helped. We shouldn’t have to do it though.
@iantobanter95465 ай бұрын
It'd be interesting to do a comparison with Orihuela town where all the taxes end up. Pilar de la Horedada saw the light and set up independent some years ago and looks a lot better with new facilities as a consequence.

@flitsies5 ай бұрын
That seems to me to be more about the people who live there than the council, yes the council should remove the weeds, but that rubbish looked like stuff from peoples own homes, empty tv boxes rubble from renovation and so on. Some people no matter where they go will trash a place. Perhaps there needs to be a neighbour hood watch group to tackle the rubbish dumpers.

That’s one of the reasons we bought on a golf resort
@barrygentry53645 ай бұрын
I live in Entre Naranjos, also known as Vistabella Golf in recent years, which is part of Orihuela Costa. Our roads can be similar to these, although I do see council workers from time to time and a road sweeper lorry comes around irregularly, but can’t do much as everyone parks on the road and not in their gardens. We don’t have enough recycle bins, which leads to inconsiderate home owners dumping empty packaging alongside the bins, without even having the decency to break down the boxes and put the pieces in the largest box to contain their mess. The waste collecting teams will not pick up waste from the ground, and nor should they need to. I collect my recyclable waste and if it won’t fit in our bins I will drive to another area where there are bins and use them. Not sure if the problem will ever resolve itself in my lifetime. The entrance to the Urb is cared for by the golf course, so generally presents well.

@sangriaproperties.55074 ай бұрын
Yes its a number of reasons. 1.Builders and Gardeners who dont want to pay for a skip or to pay for trade rubbish removal. 2.Orihuela Costa doesnt have a recycling plant. Torrevieja does and i used to give the guy a drink to let me in. 3.Yes lazy residents. 4.Why dont the council used the large tarmac area at the bottom of Los Altos (Dream Hills) And Pau 8 to place some large skip to separate garden/rubble/furniture/etc etc. Orihuela City sucks the majority of funds from the Coast. 5.It isnt just rubbish.Schools/Roads/Public transport/How about a library. Love living here but please vote when given the chance.

Thanks for making this video Barry. Yes Orihuela council are at best inept, just look at the chiringuito fiasco for example and the difference in cleanliness between the Costas and the city are night and day. But what they can’t be held responsible for is the general attitude of the public. The fly tipping by builders( sorry cowboys) is a disgrace. But just as bad are the homeowners who think it’s acceptable to dump beds, mattresses sofas, you name it next to the basuras. I for one have cleaned the area around our basuras of other people waste as I ‘m proud of our street and feel massively lucky to own a home in Spain. I live just by the park you walked through and our urb president was instrumental in getting it looking great again. There are some amazing people who are really passionate about our area( Wombles of Valencias) for example who go out picking up rubbish in their own time. But unfortunately we are outnumbered by selfish, lazy people with no pride.

Spot on video. I live in Manilva, we are lucky enough to have refuse collection almost daily, it mounts up and residents can be lazy, selfish baskets ( of all nationalities, I should add). The ugly sight of rubbish doesnt last long BUT it is reapeated, weekly....

I fear it is the same everywhere, we live in such a fragmented and throw away society.Also a lot of it looks like fly tipping as many councils, in order to meet EU wide recycling requirements, have excessive charges for rubbish disposal which is an extra cost to builders who are unwilling to pay for it.I am sure those whose properties are being built of convcerted turn a blind eye as their builders drives off with a cart load of rubble. I am reminded of the old gag I heard in london about two guys in the pub: One man says to the other, " f'ing council they're useless, you know, I went to the toilet on Monday and its thursday already and no one has come round to flush it " Its really about education. Maybe you should organize a community clean up day;) As for the vegetation I am always amazed how things in that climate grow so fast!

I think it's a Spanish thing, anybody who's cycled across Spain like myself can tell you the amount of trash littering the whole country, even national parks, is astonishing. Also, every city & largish town has poor areas where maybe local council fees are not paid, so nothing gets collected and they end up looking like ghettos.

Letting weeds run would seems to be common I'm most Spanish towns, o don't understand it, people let these weeds grow right outside their properties. I'd rather pay an extra €100 euros a year in IBI and have council workers cleaning up the area, but I think the majority would rather have lower IBI and let the weeds grow. Crazy, absolutely crazy, spoils the whole area.

Just back from Playa de La Mata/Torrevieja today & the bin area was the same on our street - residents & tourists are the problem. @ScottishCoupleInSpain5 ай бұрын
It depends on the type of rubbish, there are tips but there are regulations so one issue is people don’t bother. Fly tipping is an issue, bins not being emptied frequently enough and people dumping whatever they like next to bins or on the streets. Orihuela council don’t take care of the costa area so it’s a vicious cycle.
