Another great video. I lived in Sighthill, then grew up in a council house in Fife (don’t hold that against me!). I’m in the category that has Edinburgh as their base but travels the world from there, returning to Edinburgh isn’t a chore for me, thankfully. I worked with 7 year olds in a scheme in Edinburgh, asking them what they wanted to be when they grew up, answers included, no one employs folk from their area, a couple of cleaners, a joiner, footballer and one astronaut. My kids’ class of the same age a mile away in a posher area, would never say they wouldn’t get a job, or be a cleaner. Material poverty also often leads to a poverty of ambition and aspiration. We brought people like yourself and others from the area, that had careers in medicine, journalism, business etc and who had done interesting things with their lives, into the school to talk about their experiences. Later we asked the kids again what they wanted to be when they grew up, not one said they wouldn’t have a job. Now there were doctors, nurses, tv reporters, restaurant owners etc and that one wee girl that still wanted to be an astronaut. Having a positive view of the future not only impacts on how they see themselves and their self worth, but their attitudes to educational attainment, their personal relationships and their hopes for the future.

Saying that most people in Scotland have low expectations and low ambitions (especially in the schemes) is 100% accurate and there's no shame in saying it. I'm from a small town in Clackmannanshire where everyone knows each other, and everyone stays into adulthood. People don't leave. It's like a jail. I didn't realise it at the time, but I needed out. I only moved to the Highlands, but it's better than where I was. More power to you for having the balls to leave.

Love this backstory on why you left Scotland! I believe you mentioned in another video that you now reside in Nova Scotia? I myself come from Scottish ancestry with many descendants now living in Cape Breton, NS, which I visit frequently . I am always fascinated by how early settlers managed to preserve their Scottish heritage and traditions when they immigrated to Nova Scotia (most notably the Gaelic language in Cape Breton). Would you consider making a video on your thoughts about living in Nova Scotia as a Scottish person and living in Canada as a whole? Greetings from Ontario 🇨🇦!

I am originally from East Germany. Have been in the US for the last 20 years. You said a lot in your video that is exactly true for me and how/why I left Germany, especially growing up working class with no dreams and ambitions. Add to that growing up having a dictator/communism as the head of the country. People can’t recover quickly from oppression. The mindset is like stone, hard to change. Fantastic take. Your situation in Scotland was very much similar to my current one, only with Northern Ireland instead. For some reason people I'll pass on the street mostly hold fixed sour mopey expressions and ooze this horrible air of negativity. I hate it, all jobs I have worked here at home and school also have been miserable too because of my co-worker's attitudes. Just sucks the life right out of everything. And the constant rain doesn't help that. Despite us living in a nice-looking location the locals are just fine-tuned to this negative spirit and I'm sick of it, I know a strong person wouldn't let this get to them but its very very tough at the worst of times... and especially in 2020. Thank you for this video. It hit very close to home for me personally, and I know that once normal travel is back on the cards I will emigrate somewhere with a better vibe. Your story sounds similar to the generations of Scots who emigrated to North America. My ancestors came from Scotland to the US two hundred years ago. I've thought about moving to or spending some years in Russia, Canada, or Scotland, but after visiting several times I realized what I really wanted wasn't a place but the right kind of person, and I could find that in the US and it would be easier. I also didn't want to leave my home and family and northwest climate and start again somewhere else. But some people thrive on it, either moving to one country or traveling around long-term. I like Socttish accents (thanks for the accent videos), but what frustrated me when I looked for Scottish movies is they all seem to be about heroin addicts or gangster youths or criminals, and I wanted something more positive. I tried reading Iain Banks but his fiction was too weird and his nonfiction seemed like the kind of American driving everywhere there's too much of here -- I'd rather take a train. So maybe there is something in that negativity that some people might want to get away from. I said I decided not to move to Canada, but then the Trump phenomenon started making me think of it again, especially if he got a second term. But now I'm older and even less willing to travel, and Canada wouldn't want me as much at my age, so I'll just stay in the US and hope for the best and try to make it better somehow. But I'm glad you've found a home in Canada, and I know by my Canadian friends and one Nova Scotia friend, including one who moved from England, that it's a great place.
@ASMRMuzz4 жыл бұрын
Cheers Mike! Agreed on the Scottish Movies point, we do seem to have an awful lot of negative stories to draw upon. It can be hilarious or depressing, maybe both.

I didn’t see it as shitting on Scotland (of course I’m not from Scotland, I’m from New Jersey, so...)A place effects each person differently. Your story really encapsulates the mentality of my parents' generation (working class Glasgow). My upbringing, although still working class, was not dysfunctional/turbulent like theirs and academia afforded me more opportunities. I've worked in France, Germany and China and currently study in England, but I feel firmly connected to my fellow citizens and deeply entrenched within Scotland's progressive movement. We have a lot of work to do, but I feel a real drive, an uplifting internationalist synergy among those who call Scotland home. Many prejudices are being dismantled to produce a more equal, accepting society. We are not special in this regard: it's somewhat emblematic of the times. However, I enjoyed your account and it reminded me of my dad's siblings' reasons for emigrating to canada in the 70s and 80s. Take care 💙
