I discovered these techniques by accident when playing the 'wrong' notes - it definitely works, just needs some experimentation and a bit of bravery! I'm really pleased to see that what I'm doing has some actual structure behind it. Will now carry on and bend the rules with a lot more confidence. Many thanks for confirming this, Scott, excellent teaching!

Breaking rules and experimenting is a GREAT way to find some new sounds and try to figure out how to make them fit in the right spot. Not knowing the actual theory is fine as long as it fits, but when you know the theory, you can break the rules on purpose a little more. I go pretty deep into this stuff in the Early Advanced Pathway of my Sax School if you want to dive in deeper. Keep breaking rules! 😁

Can you please make a video about recording saxophone compression , also what effects to use I really believe early Sanborn used slap reverbe , delay combo gave him that doubling effect ?also very prominent on Double vision Maputo tune ,do you have and idea?

Hey! My recording process is very simple. I record flat and just add a little digital reverb. For KZbin videos it's usually at around 12%. If I'm playing along with a track it can go between 16-20%. I really love my sound the way it comes out of the sax, and don't really add much to it. As for David Sanborn in the 80/90s, he defintely has some serious reverb on it. I don't think he is doubling, as in playing on second tracks to fatten it up, but I wouldn't be surprised if the track was duplicated and panned with effects added to it.

Nice examples of how to progressively make modal lines more interesting. Good tension & resolution tips. "You don't play those 'outside notes' in your first 4 bars (unless you are Eric Dolphy -- Ha)"
