As you were talking about the cable, it made me think of bicycle chains and sprockets. I don't know how you would solve the twisting problem for the mount, but anchoring a chain seems easier to me. You could make it one continuous loop actuating all of the arms and it would be anchored just with a fixed sprocket in the center.

Great video. Why not put the pulley further out, as such the attachment point would not have to pass by it? You could even use the entire length by putting one double pulley on the end of the stick as a guide and one pulley at the bottom?

the passing by is the action that would bring the 'kart' and therefore the piece of tabletop back into the locked expanded position.

for the first idea, can't you just use another cable to connect the current cable to the cart, with a spring on the other side of the cart?

How about some kind of bar on the bottom of the 'cart,' perpendicular to the axis of travel? Whatever you use to attach between the cable and the bar just needs to be able to slide sideways.

Bicycle brake SLEEVE for any direction change you might need. I've never in my life managed to wear the nylon weaving inside one even on long actuation lever type brakes (drums, and the older more inefficient disk brakes with lever cable action).

Hello from Israel. I've seen all your table videos, very nice work. But Although you made some very good tables, i think there are a few things that you need to improve on the basic design rather than try to come up with a new concept. I already designed and made a few working models of this kind of table and I have a few suggestions that might improve your product. First of all, a simple slewing ring will be much more appropriate for the spining mechanism and it provides a better support and distribution of the table's weight than a single axis .it will also leave you a nice big gap in the center to easaly work with on the octopus mechanism Wich doesn't rotate and for all the rest. I also suggest that you try to make the star bigger and the inner leafs shorter but wider, because your table is not as big as it can be when it's extended. but you can only achieve this by putting all of the linear rails on the same level and that will require a different lift mechanism for the leafs section than what you came up with on your designs. concerning the cable mechanism I think that it's an interesting idea, but try to put the pulley vertically somehow and it will solve your side switching problem and will act mote like a linear rail going back and forth and not right to left as it is now.

Also, this table should rotate only 120 degrees, not almost 180 degrees like in your videos. If the table only rotate 120° from small to big and the opposite it means that you can now support the star in three out center places and it will result in a much simpler star lifting mechanism. instead of just two places of star lifting and a complicated star mechanism to compensate the problem of lifting in just two places while also rotating instead of three. But unfortunately 120° spin and maximum extension size is not possible with your eight leafs design and it will result in a small table when it is extended. Big extension size and 120° spin can only be achieved with twelve leafs desing. 8 leafs = 180° table spin 12 leafs = 120° table spin Think about it. Once again, I really like your designs and products, but after designing those kind of tables and 10 years of carpentry experience im able to see where your desings should improve themselves.

Instead of a cable, how about some timing-belt (eg GT2 like used on a 3D printer or CNC). The cart could have a cog that engages on one side that flips out of the way at max extension, causing a cog on the other side to engage for the trip back. The flipping mechanism would be activated by the cart hitting a stop.

I considered those, belts are harder to terminate than cables, flipping mechanisms might be difficult for people to DIY well.
