Yea, that was a "wait, hold up..." moment for me too. Then again, when I was a kid and the Gamy Boy was at it's peak, everyone I knew who had one had to either save up allowances, birthday and holiday money for months to get one or had to beg their parents for months to get one, so there was _no_ way they were going to risk losing or breaking it by actually bringing it with them on the school bus, on car trips or on a vacation. They might have brought it to their friend's house but even then only if they trusted that friend implicitly. Otherwise, their Game Boys never left their house, or even their bedrooms in most cases. So, for me, I kind of forgot that the Game Boy was meant to be a portable system at all.

I think you're REALLY underestimating how hard dedicated video game time on the TV was to come by in the 90's and early 2000's. I didnt need it to go outside. I just needed to be able to play when my parents or siblings were in the living room or watching TV. TVs weren't everywhere in every room back then. And TV was monitored and shared. (In most families, not speaking for everyone.) I MUCH preferred consoles that were "portable" or handheld. When I played the actual consoles on TV I had to take turns with my 2 brothers and 1 sister... and fuck that. It still reflects in my gaming, I still prefer my 3DS and my Switch Lite (outside of PC). I'm 34 now. I was 13 in 2000 and a high school freshman in 2001. Just to put this in perspective for the whipper snappers.

I have two friends working in fashion ( one in retail the other in design) and the industry tries to establish pockets all the time but guess what, women just don't buy it. Seriously, Companies listen to the "we want pockets" screeching evey season and no one is buying them because the look bulky and are less comfortable for many women. So the pockets are a niche thing, just like trousers for men without pockets. You will find them, just not on shelves of your local maintream shop or the frot page of online shops.
