In this video I make a K style Rocket Stove.
On our "Off Grid" property that we hope to move to soon, we have a lot of timber and twigs that are great for camp fires and cooking etc. I figured I should make a rocket stove and save money on natural gas.
Why a Rocket stove?
Rocket Stoves are quite efficient in burning small branches and twigs to produce a very hot directional fire directly beneath your frying pan/ pot etc. They use very little wood (fuel) to cook a meal and produce very little smoke once it is heated. They are a great portable option for camping.
This stove is quite large and puts out a lot of heat. Trick is to start a small fire in the combustion chamber, which heats the whole stove up and creates that rocket effect, sucks air in and it speeds up the combustion shooting flames out the top. Adding sticks as it heats up. (I love it :)
To make this Rocket Stove check the video for the dimensions I used. The main body is made from 100 x 100 x 4mm Tube. Legs from 65 x 35 x 4mm box. All Mild steel painted with heat paint.
Thanks for watching
Regards
Scott

@@ScottTurnerformeindustrious I've found with BBQs and things that 3mm is around the minimum if you don't want it to get distorted by the heat. But then a square tube is so stable maybe 1.6mm would be OK. Great design I may copy it :) I never know what the ratio of the horizontal and vertical tube lengths should be but 300/450 looks good.

I remember in the early days of my engineering apprenticeship when I was welding a structure, the foreman who was about 60 years old, wandered over and said, "Hows it looking, is it square?" I looked at him and said, "Looks pretty close to me." He went off his head, saying pretty close, this is precision fucken engineering and you says its pretty close, he then asked for my square, eyed it up and said, yea thats pretty close alright and walked away. It was OK for the foreman to say it was pretty close, not the boy.

Great job Scott. I’ve been making these for a few years now. I make an optional pellet gravity feeder insert version. Took quite a few goes to get the feed just right. I’m toying with the idea of fitting a length of 3” exhaust tube about 2.5m long to a 180’, then back down to about 1.8m, with another 90’ elbow, then it goes out through a panel that fits into a window (only needs to be clipped into the frame), and then a final exhaust flue. It would be as an emergency backup, should we lose power for an extended period. We lost power for 5 days after a storm in May 2019, which was tough, but at least it wasn’t the depths of winter. Cheers from southern Tassie.

Very nice build, excellent, but the walls are not insulated, I thought all rocket stoves had insulated walls to increase the draw. In fact I thought this was the major difference between a hobo stove (not insulated) and a rocket stove. Is this incorrect? Love the design, think I might copy it, for my outdoor kitchen area Liked and subscribed, thank you

Hello Scott, I'm watching you build this rocket stove just to get more ideas about them, but as a fellow welder, I strongly recommend that you make the use of safety glasses when grinding or using a zip cut when cutting out pieces of the metal,,, serious ey injury may occur... I made a k style rocket stove here recently. I noticed my feed tube & air tube are about 5 inch’s longer than yours. Does it make a difference with my air tube being longer? Does it hurt the airflow? Should I cut them off or just drill some holes closer to the front?🤷🏼‍♂️ Thanks in advance, any info is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious
@ScottTurnerformeindustrious Жыл бұрын
I really haven't tested tube lengths sorry. Just thinking it through; if the air intake is longer there is potential to get more airflow obstruction. How well is your stove going, that's the best indication? They take a bit to heat up and get going initially, but once going it should give good heat and draw in that air. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Nice project and nice job. Only thing I would probably change is having adjustable burner plate for raising and lowering it

I have made 3 of these rocket stoves must like yours, I just have different legs on them. I am making a other one now. People seem to like them. Yours are very good, keep up the good work.

Thanks Bruce! They are a good simple wood stove, and like you have said, you can build in improvements to make it all work out a bit better.

Actually I'm not sure. Perhaps if it was heat proof paint. I use pot belly stove paint or engine paint.
