Great insight Scotty! I bought a Patagonia Black Hole 60L backpack/duffel. Loved traveling with it while in Thailand! It's sleek, almost waterproof and most of all, comfortable to carry on your back or carrying it as a duffel. Top loading and used it with packing cubes to help keep things organized. I think I will indulge in the Osprey Porter for my next adventure as it was a toss-up when I purchased the Patagonia.

I'd posted about changing to the Farpoint 40L when next you're looking for a bag, but quite a few on here are already extolling its virtues. I would suggest that you may be packing a few too many shirts and boxers. With the dri-fit/all artificial-fiber materials at all price points now, they're cheap to buy and you can wash these things in the sink nightly and they're dry in the morning. Maybe two tees, one long-sleeved tee, 3 boxer-briefs, and a few pair of merino wool socks of varying thickness. You can wear 65-70% merino wool socks for two weeks before they start to smell, and the REI brand can be had for about $10/pair. I also have a pair of lightweight, artificial-fiber hiking pants that convert into shorts (I bought them for about $25 from Bass Pro), plus they have the mesh in the shorts so they can be worn as swim trunks as well. Otherwise, a pair of trunks that have the look of casual/hiking shorts can serve a dual purpose for you.

agree!! the simple rule for packing if "ure not sure what you need" or "you think you know" (unless you KNOW!) is to take out 2/3 of what you have packed and go with 1/3. if you NEED anything along the way - just buy it. good vid!! cheers!

When you travel to Asia it's important to bring anti odor shirts/sweaters coz you're gonna get sweaty and if you do sweat a lot it can be smelly. Also bring travel pillows, towels and utensils. I prefer the ones from sea to summit. I always have an umbrella too though when I was in Malaysia it was confiscated for some reason. Bring waterproof shoes too. Like the trail shoes that are moisture wicking and slippers like the eva birkenstocks. Use packing cubes as well. Life changing 😂. I also carry with me 3 outlet charger and a power line from xiaomi. You also might want to bring cap, a moisture wicking one or waterproof like the one from Columbia sportswear. It rains crazy in Asia at anytime especially Vietnam and Thailand. Always bring rollable or packable bags too and a packable rain/storm jacket. I also use Osprey bags, Farpoint 55 and Transporter global carry on 40. Both are carry on approved though if you'll fly locally with a small jet they would want you to check in your Farpoint 55😊

I've been using the Osprey Farpoint 40 and it's been great. Using Merino clothing, as it goes longer between washes and wears really comfortable. A laptop and modern phone (Iphone XR) covers my camera, music, videos and FaceTime/Whatsapp for talking to friends and family perfectly fine. I also use noise cancelling headphones as they are great at drowning out the noise around you. Next trip is Canada, so a down jacket and extra layers will be needed but I can cheat as I need to bring my snowboard so I sneak it in that bag...

I just started my backpacking trip a week ago. I was looking for a bag no bigger than 50L, but I was struggling to find one which met my requirements - open like a suitcase and fold away straps - and fit me properly, because I have quite a short back. I found a couple at 45-50L with the requirements, but they just didn't fit my back properly. So I ended up with a Deuter 60+10L as it was specifically designed for women and their smaller backs. I am determined not to use the extra +10L. If I do, I plan on sending any souvenirs I buy, home. As I discovered last night while trying to find my hostel, it is already too heavy so I'm going to need a proper sort out before I leave Tokyo. As for clothes, I am now regretting not bringing a pair of jeans. I just landed in Japan, and it is cold! All i've got is a few pairs of shorts and leggings and a thin hoody as everywhere else I'm travelling to will be really hot! Today was manageable, but as soon as the sun started to set I could really feel the cold set in and had to return to my hostel. Also, please tell Aly that I found a Suitcase similar to hers in Hong Kong which was covered with Elmo

While it's not gear, I always carry $100 USD in $20 bills, well hidden deep inside my bag. This is "emergency money" in case my wallet is stolen or I am robbed. USD can easily be changed to most any currency in the world, or often can be used "as-is." It's enough to get emergency needs for a day, or even pay a small bribe if necessary, but it's not so much that if the bag is stolen it is a huge loss.

Since i been traveling around a lot, i go with the osprey waypoint 80 but only using the main bag with 60l, to that i got my foldable matador beast 28l for weekend trips. in conclusion i would have up to 88 liters if i wanted to. 60l is usually totally enough. the good thing is that you just can put your foldable backpack in the main bag.
@sirharolddihnni7 жыл бұрын
only using 60l in that 80.. was it still ok to carry on?
@MrFehlstart7 жыл бұрын
you got me wrong. the waypoint 80 consists of two bags. So you have the big one with 60l and the 20l small backpack which you can mount on the 60l bag with a zipper. What i wanted to say is that i only use the 60l backpack and leave the add-on one (20l one) at home. Instead i am using my foldable backpack (matador beast 28l). You can save so much space with it.

Need to get my hubby on board with this! We travelled to Peru & Chile for 7 weeks with our 5 year old. We backpacked in Peru (yes, you can do it with kids, the "hostals" were like a cross between a hostel and a guesthouse/b&b, we also used Airbnb). My husband took 23 kg in a 60L pack, I took 19kg in a 40 L pack- I also had all of my daughter's stuff in my pack! The only thing is my husband had our daughter's Little blow up mattress & sleeping bag strapped to his. (Super light, but bulky-ish.) He regretted it. Of course his clothes & shoes are bigger & heavier, but still! We loved Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley, and want to return one day. Recommend Peru highly! Love the tips, Scotty. 🍌🍌🍌

Tried the Porter 46 and didn't like it at all. Those rigid sides make it so bulky, even when there's nothing in it. So I ended up getting the Nebula 34 instead. It's 12 liters smaller, but still has plenty of space for a minimalist nomad, and better layout for electronics than the Farpoint 40. For some reason the Farpoint has the laptop compartment on the outside of the pack, instead of near your back where it's more protected and the weight is closer to your center of gravity.

A decent waterproof/windproof shell can probaby be had for about $50 just shopping around. For a packable puffer jacket you might want to try Heat Keep. It's low end and not as packed as the $200-$400 ones, but they were clearing them at Kohl's last winter for $25. BTW, fellow Farpoint 40 guy here.

Interesting... I went on my first proper backpacking trip in May 2012, nothing really planned, I just woke up on a Tuesday booked a cheap one way flight to Hong Kong, I left on the Thursday, quit my job whilst on the National Express to Heathrow Airport, I only planned to be away for about 2 weeks or so to clear my head but I ended up going back to the UK in March 2015 (My mum was not pleased with that.) But I just took the rucksack I already had which was a 65+10, plus a 25l backpack, bloody heavy let me tell you, especially after buying thicker clothing as I got to Australia in July so it was a tad nippy. I was shocked but at the same time found it hilarious whilst in Thailand seeing small framed gals walking around bending forward with a massive backpack on the back and one in front. Now I tend to either travel with my Ventura 40L or a small/medium sized wheeled suitcase 45L I believe which also turns into a backpack, and I only got it because it had a smaller 20l backpack which you can detach from it. That one is from Marks and Sparks outlet store (Yeah, don't judge me!.) for £39.99.

nice video but i do not agree when you say 'do not go over 50l for the pack'. If you do hikes, camping and stuff, you will surely need a 70l. I am going south america soon, including two months in Patagonia, where long hikes (one week each) are involved. That means i will have to bring food supplies for a week, a tent, a stove, sleeping bag and mat. Also i will go to brazil after, where it's hot, then peru, where it will be colder. So i ll need a bigger range of clothing. So, when you say 'over 50l it's a big no'..well, i disagree, strongly. cheers man, good videos!

nothing substantial and significant just generic reiteration and blabber. just pure advertising/promotion .. plus the beard is distracting. i dont get why someone would want to have it like that. and with highlights. omg haha
