Another option to check first is Lowe's or Home Depot. I was going to pay a couple hundred bucks for an additional transponder key cut and programmed at a locksmith, but recently I was at Lowe's shopping around and asked them at the key center if they duped these type keys and sure enough they did. They had this huge computerized key machine and did it in a couple of minutes. Cost me $75 and works like a charm.

Going to a locksmith sometimes has its issues as well, usually only one guy knows how, and they don’t do them often so, they may forget and things may take more time. Prices tend to be higher than other places as well. The best place perhaps to go is to find tow services that has locksmith services “Lock and tow.” Some will charge a flat price for as many keys made. So check around and then buy more than one set on eBay. My place charged $64 to cut two keys, program two keys and two remotes to open and close the door locks. All four were bought online for $15. I was quoted $200 at one locksmith. The place I went to also said that in her experience over the years, greater than 95% of the eBay keys worked if you buy from a reputable seller. Thanks Scotty for putting this video up. Saved me a ton.

Locksmith here. VERY IMPORTANT! Make sure you get a final price over the phone. However if your key isn't turning in a lock or ignition, we may need to come out to assess whether it's the key being worn out or mis-cut or the lock failing, yet we can still give you estimates based on what we think the issues may range from and confirm them again in person before we put any tools to your vehicle. If you feel like you're being pressured, you're talking to someone at a call center, or they say they have to send the locksmith out and they only give you the trip cost, that's likely a scammer. They are all over the states and they get leads from call centers who get commission for referring these alleged locksmiths. The supposed locksmiths they send out charge whatever they want when they get there. It's best to familiarize yourself with a local locksmith before you need them in an emergency and get pressured into letting them send a guy out. If you have any questions, I can try to answer them as best as possible or point you in the right direction.

I say research "thoroughly" above, as the VW dealer service guy who programmed it for me told me they were suprised this elcheapo eBay key worked, as most knock offs won't work with their programmer, or will be wrong for the car. For those of us who are single, live alone and/or are up in years, I recommend that you always carry the second car key with you. If you've gone shopping and lose the key, lock it in the car on a bad weather day, etc., it's a relief to have the second key with you at that point. I also belong to AAA, but they can take 20-30 minutes (possibly longer) to get to you. I just keep the second key fob in my pants or shirt pocket, so I always have it with me. Plan ahead; you only need to get locked out of your car once to understand how important it is to have the second fob with you while you're out driving.

Scotty, as usual, great advice, been following your segments for a while. I broke the surrounding plastic hold for the key fob on my 2007 2.4 CH Lancer. I asked my local Mitsubishi dealer. The service rep, looked down his nose, smirked and said, "$670 AUD for the blade that you have to get re-cut and the "dealer" to reprogram". I work in Sydney (Aust) CDB. I approached a local locksmith, who quoted $32, as I had the electronics in the fob and only needed a new blade. Needless to say, ten minutes later I had a perfect replacement, some $638 cheaper than Mrs Bishi. The lockies cost, if I had to reprogram was $112 total, still centuries cheaper than the dealer. Lastly, I believe that its important to memorise three items: VIN, Key fod number, and audio codes. Amazing, when spare parts will check their finger nails, smile and ask for the VIN, and their shock when you rattle it off. Thanks Scotty.

Scotty. I love your show and I will never negative you. I watched your fix-a-flat video, and thought since my tires were ok (like yours) I put some in to stop the rim leak. Well it gave my car a terrible shimmy, and it cost a lot to have the fix a flat removed from my car. However. I am not mad because you saved me 100s with all your advice. The 100 bucks I am out because of repairs because I used fix a flat is no big deal, but I know how you like to save ppl money. in a emergency use it, but to correct a leaky rim. replace the rims, or just add air when needed. Maybe the old stuff worked, but the new stuff doesn't as far as long term. As always love your videos, and HAPPY ANNY!

Before you do anything, check your model of vehicle online to see if there is a way you can program it yourself. I needed one for my 2005 Chrysler 300 (210k miles and going strong). The buttons on my wife's key quit working. The key was still good. The dealer wanted $250, one locksmith wanted $175, and another wanted $95. I went for the $95 option, but even with his coding equipment he couldn't get the key programmed. Searching online, I discovered the owner could program up to eight keys following a simple procedure, as long as they had TWO working keys. Fortunately, I did. I ordered two new ones for $15. I filed one of the new keys until it would turn in the ignition. Then followed the procedure: insert one working key, turn to the "on" position for five seconds, remove it and insert the second working key, turn to the "on" position and leave it until a beep, then remove it, and finally insert the new key and turn it to the "on" position and wait for the tone (up to 1 minute). Worked perfectly! The next time I was in town, I had the locksmith cut the other new key for $2 and programmed it myself. Take away: Right now, research your vehicle to see if there is a procedure to do it yourself, and be sure you always have what you need on hand (two working keys, most likely). Better yet: Go ahead and make the extra keys NOW, and keep them in a safe place.

If you bought a used car and it wasn't at a dealer, and you need a key you can always go to the dealer present your insurance, registration and ID they can give you the pin so you can program it yourself if you have one of those fancy scan tools..

Things have changed. We can now program and cut keys with the right equipment. Just had mine done bcuz the memory only allows 8 fobs, somehow the previous owner of my Honda Accord had maxed out the 8. He had to clear the previous codes stored. Then he was able to program my fob and cut the new keys. He charges $75 per fob + key which is $200-$300 less than the dealership quotes. I tried the 4 on off coding but bcuz the number of key fobs had been maxed out, I couldn't use that simple method. Thanks for the precise video.

Or maybe it's people who aren't saving any money off of anything he said in this video. What did he tell you anybody any different than what they already know? It was said go to a lot Smith instead of the dealership that's common sense for most people but what about when the locksmith cost is just as much as the car dealership like in my case? So therefore no it's not just car dealers that are disliking this video if people who did not find any of the information in it relevant!!

If you live in Canada and need a spare key with the immobiliser chip made, try Home Hardware. Most such keys can be made up there for $50 to $75, a lot cheaper than at the dealer.

I have actually gotten better prices going to the dealer. Got an 06 G6 that only came with two keys and one keyfob. Bought a new keyfob on Amazon and called the locksmith and they want $48 to program it, called the dealer and they only charged me $20. Then shortly after the fob that came with the car went bad astopped working. This time i decided to get quotes from the dealer and a locksmith for a keyfob and programming. Locksmith quoted $110 and the dealer quoted and did it for $85. Just goes to show ya that sometimes the dealer isn’t always the most expensive option. I still call them a stealership though.
@leafbelly5 жыл бұрын
Good advice. People just need to do their research. There are no locksmiths where I live that will cut them unless you pay for their expensive keys. My dealer cut two for $25 and I found a YT video to show me how to easily program them myself.

I bought a used 2015 Dodge Ram F-150 and I only got 1 set of keys. So I went to my Local Locksmith and they wanted $400: $385 for the chip key itself and $15 to get a new door/side compartment key so I didn't to it but about a week later one of my friends told me about another lock smith my whole bill was $298 so I did that and the keys worked great!

He is right about the keyless fob. I had to buy a second one when I bought my Prius - the car was used and came with only one fob. I could not find a locksmith I could trust. My Toyota/Lexus mechanic had the equipment and software and it cost me $400. All was well for 7 years until I accidently gave the fob away to a guy who bought my Camry. I thought I was giving him the Camry fob but accidently gave him the Prius fob. I could not reach the Camry purchaser when I discovered my mistake and I had to go back to my mechanic and buy another fob which he programmed for my Prius - It was about $350 this time but I have 2 fobs now and I will not make that mistake again!! Imagine paying - over 700$ for two key fobs with programming.

Sometimes, it's a good idea to have a THIRD key so that you can make a new one and program it yourself if you lose one of 3. In my 2006 Ford, it takes 2 keys to program a third key's transponder. If you had only 2 keys and lose one, then you need the dealer to program a new one.

Found out my lock smith can make the keys for my 99 Chevy Lumina with the chip in it for $15.00 as opposed to the dealer trying to charge me $35.00. And, the dealer wanted to charge me more because he said that they would have to look up the code for the chip. Well I got a copy of the code years ago for that very reason. Took a picture of it on my phone to have it with me. Turns out, the lock smith didn't even need the code. Luckily I bought the Official Mopar Lifetime Warranty for my van and I get 6 free key fob replacements with it for as long as I own the vehicle.

If you have on with an immobilizer in it just buy a blank key online. You can get one for like 5-10 dollars. Then take your key to ACE hardware or any hardware store and ask them to cut the key. Get home, take out the immobilizer chip from the original key and put it in the new key. All that is left to do is to program the remote control so that it will lock and unlock your doors and that is super easy. Lost of videos on KZbin on how to do it. Most of them follow a couple of directions like open and close door 3 time or lock and open a couple times, each car has different ways to program. I did this and spent just 20 dollars for a new Scion Tc key. The dealer wanted to charge me more than 100 dollars 💵
@frankgeeraerts62437 жыл бұрын
There's a trick for the transponder......................buy a new key (20-25 $) without need to pay a lot of money , no need of the dealer stealing your money for initiating the transponder .............open the original spare key ,the one without distance control , pull out the transponder and fix it close to the ignition key barrel. Than you can use any copy and as much made spare key's as you want .

DON'T cut the wire to the crank sensor,to extend it to a cut-out switch!!! That is a VERY low power signal, (the signal is shielded by the "earth" wire )and you will be stranded somewhere with a dead engine; better to intercept a wire to,let's say,your fuel pump,ecu feed,etc;
@vandraiss6 жыл бұрын
If you still have both original keys you can buy a third key or Fob and program it yourself in no more than a minute for free. The instructions are in your owners manual. I've done this on my 1997 Lincoln Mark VIII, 2006 F-150 and 2017 Mustang GT. The reason you need both original keys is so on those occasions where a Valet might have your key they can't use that one key to make a key and later steal you car. If you are copying a Fob with a key the copy process simply involves putting the two original keys, then the new one in the ignition and removing them in a particular sequence. On a Proximity Fob you insert the original Fobs, then the new one in a slot under the cup holders, and briefly press the start button (Mustang). The message center will tell you in a few seconds that the new Fob is successfully programmed. Take the new blank key to any locksmith and they will cut it for a buck or two. They did mine for free. On my Lincoln and F-150 the total cost was about $15 for the key and Fob. The OEM Proximity key on the Mustang was $61.00 on Amazon. That beats the hell out of the $300-500 the dealer will charge.
