Back in 1986, I met an industrious person who worked two full-time jobs (a graveyard shift at a warehouse and then a day shift at a factory) so he decided to live in a van instead of his apartment that he only slept in. He showered and ate at work as well as a gym he had a membership in. It worked out for him and he saved a lot of money working 16-hour days with no bills apart from gasoline and food. His van was fitted out like an RV with a bed over storage bins and a wardrobe for clothes. Very minimalist. He spent his weekends partying at friends' places, going to the beach or camping trips.

@@jacobsearcy9856 only ever had one 4L80 fail on our fleet, the 4L60 you mention is a weaker version of the 80 series and commonly fails after 200k miles. Working for a company that uses all sorts of cargo Van's, the Chevy Express has been the most solid so far. Sure, we had some that had thier share of problems but most of them can be atributed to many of the guys abusing them or not following maintenance schedules. I found that if you treat these vans right and maintain them regularly, they can be pretty reliable. I had one that I put 240,000 miles on and it still was going strong when I turned it in to the fleet company. On the other end of the spectrum, the worse van my company tried was Ram ProMasters, both the large size and City mini work Van's. They were so bad, my company couldn't wait to get rid of them and we went back to the Chevy Express. BTW...this comes from a guy who is not a fan of Chevy vehicles in general. Just giving credit where credit is due.

Wow this brings back some memories, I did something similar, but not with all the amenities. I used a regular Chevy cargo van, but only had an inflatable bed and hiking gear. plus a regular cooler. that's it, did a coast to coast yo-yo, from Hollywood Fla, to San Francisco, and back, visited many of the places this fine gentleman went to ( Monument valley, Arches, Rushmore, Yellowstone, etc. ) this was back in the 90s when gasoline was still around 85 cents a gallon in some places. couple years later I did an even longer 1 month long trip, in a small 1979 MG Midget. 10,000+ miles in a small two seat. I set up tent at camp grounds and sometimes slept out in the open in my sleeping bag, mostly free locations, only paid a in a few spots, never more than 15 bucks. I really wish I could do this again, I just love road trips, just waking up, looking at a map and asking, ok whats interesting around here, and just going there. and do some back packing.

This is what's known as the "California starter home".
@leadnsteel14285 жыл бұрын
California is basically Detroit with palm tress. Unless you make 150+k in the technology industry or are a successful actor I dont know how one can afford to live there.

I recently sold some furniture on Craigslist, here in central Texas, guy that bought it had just moved from California, he works I law enforcement, Said the same the thing, he put the figure at 250k, he was shocked that gas is at 2.39, here in the area, He called California one big sh!th0le

WAIT!! How is this possible, Scotty hates Chevies! Our 2007 HHR (gasp) has 207,688 miles on it. It's taken us on the entire Trans Canada Highway....twice. From Mexico to New York (never again!). Florida Keys to Eureka, etc. etc. I've had four, 8' two by fours inside with hatch and windows closed. One broken motor mount. two sets of tires and two batteries.....period.

Steven Bailey I’m sure that one was made on a Tuesday! Haha I think theres to other brand we can hate than JLR lol

Florida Keys? You meant Conch Republic.
@raymondabella22895 жыл бұрын
Congrats Steve, you got lucky and got a good one. Everyone arround me who had one of those HHRs had nothing but trouble, especially electrical problems. None the less, it's cool that your HHR has treated you well and may you get many more miles or years from you ride.

This is what I want to do. Get a cargo or conversion van and travel America
@bobbyleglocks19925 жыл бұрын
I did it with my gf and I. We had a blast just cruised the roads and traveled. It's easier than you think. Start simple and go from there. The solar panels are nice but not necessary. Hope you do it.
@OhighOSkater5 жыл бұрын
Bobby Schulte That is awesome! Thank you for the advice. I think I’m going to give it a try. It sounds like a great experience
@cvcoco3 жыл бұрын
Yes in the end it comes down to whether you can stand up or not. You can put a high top for $3-4K but they leak and reduce structural stability. Anyway this was only a tour of yet another van, not what its like to drive across america in it. Comfortable? Quiet? Bumpy? Harsh? Gas mileage? Tiring? Backaches? Tire noise? Vibrations and noises? Hard to steer and park? Its the journey I thought we'd learn about, not the destinations and friges.
