As you noted in another video, make sure you don't put racing pads on your street car. You can get more aggressive pads for sportiness, but don't go to full racing brakes. They only work optimally when up to temperature, and you'll almost never reach that under normal driving conditions. It can be dangerous! Also, racing and sporty brake pads eat your rotors up faster too.
@adamrichardson2227
@adamrichardson2227 6 жыл бұрын
Good point. They also are louder and cause more dust. If you are racing the only thing that matters is the high speed and heat performance, otherwise get street pads. After I installed my big brake kit from Akebono I was tempted to do this. I am glad I didn't since I don't trust my skills at a race track haha

I’m runnin metallic pads. Press the brake a little harder for the first stop till they get a little heat in them, big deal. Once they are warm, I’ll just say I’ve never faded them. Other than that , most of the times when the rotors are shot, the pads are shot so it all gets replaced. The previous front (metallic) pad set on this car lasted for 90k of mixed driving.
@kramnull8962
@kramnull8962 5 жыл бұрын
chbrules, they are like sandpaper on your pads. So you will need to change the front pads used with slotted rotors every 10,000 miles or so... Bigger wheels/tires also cause higher brake wear as well, because they gather more momentum. Well unless you use the transmission to help in braking...

That's why some porsche owners with the PCCB (the ceramic brake discs) switch back to the regular Porsche brake system. While it's outstanding on a track, the ceramic brakes suck big time in the rain driving in the city.

You definitely know what you’re talking about Scotty. Definitely from experience. I learned the hard way. My brake pedal sank to the floor and I thought that bleeding the brakes would fix it right up...I was dead wrong. I was so confused and didn’t know much about vehicles, so I changed the master cylinder and that fixed it! Kinda felt dumb after that point forward...

Regarding bleeding the system... It should be done periodically. Brake fluid can wear out and the chemical composition can change over time due to heat and other factors. When this happens, the fluid isn't as "firm" and the pedal can get spongy even without air leaking into the system. I had this on a (then) 16 year old car. The brake fluid had turned a really dark red and the pedal was going all the way to the floor and barely stopping the car. I changed all the pads and then bled each caliper individually until all the old fluid was gone and there was new, clear fluid at each caliper. After doing that, braking performance returned to normal. Drivers should also inspect the rubber hoses at each wheel to make sure heat or debris have not weakened the rubber causing it to bulge out. This can also cause spongy brakes as the fluid is pushed into an expanding bulge in the hose instead of pressing against the piston in the caliper.
@workingshlub8861
@workingshlub8861 6 жыл бұрын
brake hoses can look fine on the outside but go bad internally and seize up your calipers..
@hellshade2
@hellshade2 6 жыл бұрын
@Jeff foster what happens to the brake fluid is it absorbs moisture. brake fluid is hydroscopic and this cause the fluid to become contaminated. this condition will cause the pedal to get low and spongy. but in regards to a bulge in a brake hose that will not cause your pedal to be spongy,but it is a rupture in the inner hose and should be replaced immediately.
@sienile
@sienile 6 жыл бұрын
Simple way to check if your fluid is old and contaminated: Is it black? If so, it's full of moisture. Most cars will have this issue after about 5 years. Good idea to replace your coolant as often as your brake fluid, they both typically have a 5 year service life.
@jeff92k7
@jeff92k7 6 жыл бұрын
@Hellshade2 Yeah... that. I didn't take the time to look it up again to get the specific details. Just knew that sometimes it does need to be bled and changed, even though Scotty said not to worry about that in the video.

@Rick M these days at least the abs unit is stand alone. back in the 90's general motors had a number of cars,mostly J bodys (sunbird,olds ciera,etc) that had the master cylinder and abs as one unit. if the master went bad you were looking at near 1,000 dollars for a replacement. don't know which engineer thought this was a good idea...

It’s not it’s just computer driven. When braking normal all the breaks are applied when the computer detects wheel spin or slide it closes certain valves and only opens others so it can individually brake the wheels separately for each other. It’s pretty simple system just the computer side people freak out over.

An important thing to remember when checking brake pads is to always check the INBOARD pads. On a typical floating caliper, these ALWAYS wear more quickly. For this reason, simply checking the outboard pads can give you a false sense of how much your brake pads are actually worn. Also, because inboard pads wear more quickly, the pads with the squeaker should ALWAYS be installed in the inboard position.

Avais Hussain that's a good comment. I used to ask a customer requiring a brake job how much is you life worth. If you live in the rust belt Northern states or Canada and they salt or sand the roads or both you should service the brakes at least twice a year irrespective of M/Km's driven. Rear calipers in general suffer more from salt/sand intrusion. Honda's Rear calipers are poor in this medium for the pads sticking and corrosion etc, Subaru rear caliper though not as prone to salt/sand. If you service them regularly they will function well if you neglect them though it's rotor and pads and maybe other parts as well.

MoogleMy I drive pretty quick.. I won’t get into the politics of how fast I drive. But brakes and tyres are something I never ever cheap out on. Fluids, pads, rotors. Even if the car I have is cheap I wouldn’t. Cheaper cars need it most. If I ever felt my brakes weren’t working right I’d either get out of the car or drive real slow.

Now wait a minute... scotty i have a tech degree from uti and work at a ford dealer, if your brake booster goes bad i think the pedel will be a high hard pedal all the time due to no vacuum inside the booster, can you explain further why the pedal would go to the floor with a bad booster? Thanks -andy

Probably the worst possible thing that can happen during an emergency stop is BRAKE FAILURE...
@rangerrick1859
@rangerrick1859 6 жыл бұрын
Josh Bacon that is what the emergency hand brake is for. Just don't be afraid to yank it. Some manufacturers are so stupid for not giving any hand brake. I mean they have a parking brake switch which is no good when driving, they just want you to wreck.

Although I can't say for certain, I imagine that complete, sudden brake failure is incredibly rare, especially outside of racing, where the systems are being pushed to their mechanical limits. Pay attention to how your car acts and when things start acting differently and you should be fine, just don't ignore what your car is telling you!

I never knew the technical term for the little part on the brake pad that warns you when the pads get thin, but now I know that it's the squealer :-) Learn something everyday. Thanks for the tips and good videos, Scotty. Akebono pads next time I do brakes!

You didn't mention if the brakes squeaks it might be the back of the brake pads that needs some lubrication (like copper grease or ceramic).
@johndavies4644
@johndavies4644 6 жыл бұрын
1m2r3a all pads come with a squeal plate on the back of the pad. never apply copper grease to it. Only on the tabs/ears and that's it. And slider pins grease on slider. Never put copper grease on the back of brake pads
@1m2r3a
@1m2r3a 6 жыл бұрын
You are right, but in some cases the heat destroys the squeal plate and then you are left with metal on metal so a little grease can fix the job. Also +1 for applying the grease on the tabs.

Great video! In racing they usually don't use ABS systems though. But, often times the brakes are bled because they are soft. Usually the bleeding takes care of most problems. Can't help it I love racing.

Whenever this happens I drive as fast as I can and slam on the breaks, always fixes it without fail. And for just general squeaking sounds I'd use WD-40, might feel like your breaks are failing but there won't be a squeak. (*this is a joke, don't actually try this lol*)
