What I have found is buying something like a 5 year old or less Lexus is a good idea to consider since it was probably on average maintained better than a similar Toyota. They often get traded in for another new Lexus and those dealers sell the trade in at dealer auctions. Then they wind up on used car lots somewhere else. A Carfax type report will clue you in to that kind of history. Typically wealthier people buy them as new cars and let the dealers do all of the maintenance. They don't skimp if repairs are needed since cost is not a concern. I think you will find they are also in better cosmetic condition. In addition to some luxury you will probably get newer and better features. You just have to be careful not to pay too much like anything else.

I had a 1992 Civic for 16 years for 235,000 hard mostly city miles. I thought it was the greatest car...until I drove a crappy Corolla, which was faster and quieter, and then a Camry, which was so quiet, I thought the Honda was a bucket of rattling bolts. When I got my first real job after college, I promised myself something nice and reliable...a Lexus. Even though I've had many cars since then (BMW, Volvo, MB, every shape Toyota), only the Lexus comes to mind as the forever car. We don't live forever, but sure as heck, I rather drive a nicer, quieter, more powerful, and safer car.

Bought a 2010 Lexus gs350 in 2017 with 80k miles on it for $17k . It’s been the best vehicle we ever had. Got 125,000 miles on it now and no issues whatsoever (thank God) . We took a chance buying it with higher miles but it’s solid as a rock. I never had really looked into Lexus before and just thought they were really expensive rear wheel drive cars. Ours is all wheel drive which is what sold us on the car cuz we live in the snow belt. We thought about upgrading to a newer Lexus (RX 350) but don’t want any car payments now. The Lexus replaced my 2005 Nissan maxima that had 220,000 miles on it before it went. I was driving over 3 hours to work and back a day and needed a good car. We are now both retired and not putting hardly any miles on our vehicles. I have a 2011 Nissan maxima sv that’s fully loaded with only 71,000 miles on it and I barely run it. We usually take my wife’s Lexus. They are amazing cars.

There's a cheaper workaround for EV batteries. Find someone to replace whichever cell is bad. A Prius has about 5 cells which are pretty common. If only one cell is out, the car won't go. Dealer will charge you $4K to replace the whole battery, but battery cell repair costs about $300/Cell. Replace one or two cells, for $600 and you get back on the road relatively cheap for another 50K miles.

Piston slap. My 2001 tundra had it. I bought it new and with 20k miles on it, it was introduced to a Minnesota winter and it sounded like a diesel at startup. It went away after a few minutes but it was alarming. I took it in and that's what they said. So it does not mean it was not taken care of as I changed the oil every 3k back then and it has such low miles.

Haters always say 'Lexus is just a Toyota'. But they don't realize that Lexus has thicker glass & paint, better sound deadening, and is much more refined than even their German counterparts.

@Barely2JZ4 жыл бұрын
Catbeat Brigade a breeze. My biggest expensive were tires. Only have needed an oil change and my MAF was dirty and gave me a check engine. Easily CLEANED, didn’t replace, and it went away. It’s nothing too quick but it’s enjoyable.

2019 RX350 - love it! Except for that pesky fuel pump thingy they don’t know how to fix...
@dboucher264 жыл бұрын
If your fuel pump keeps breaking it may be due to a clogged fuel filter forcing the fuel pump to work harder than its supposed to. Another culprit for fuel pump failure is the driver almost never fill their tank all the way and drive their car on near empty all the time.

Scotty...I'm still driving a 2004 chevy tracker v6 (a suzuki vitara in drag hiding behind a chevy badge) with 240k miles on it. It's not pretty. It's not fancy. But NO major work done on it and it fires right up. Suzuki did something right.

Hi Scotty I love your videos, thanks for giving straightforward advice we can use. Question, I have a 4th generation Nissan Max, love my car it's been GREAT and Runs Great and still looks great. Have kept my car up well and driven it very well. Lately my gas mileage has not been where it should be . Changed Mass Air flow sensor, fuel filter and NGK platinum tipped spark plugs ( have changed before) have had to to replace only one ignition coil ( should I go ahead and replace the remaining five ? Please advise to improve gas mileage . Thanks as always . Car has approx. 135 K miles on it.

My issue with the Lexus versions is the mushy suspension. A GX460 compared to a 4runner is like night and day. The GX handles like a boat- mushy, slushy, and way too smooth for an SUV. I feel like Lexus killed all the 'trucklike' feel to make them more sellable to luxury drivers. I sold the GX in 3 months and got another 4runner.

I just looked at the resale value on a 2012 Focus SE Hatchback (which I had 8 years ago). Those things do NOT have very good resale value (any of them, the 2012 to 2016 or whenever they stopped making them). I saw about $6,000 resale value. Those things started about $18,000 new with an automatic. That's about 1/3 of it's original value. Most other cars wouild be worth about half of what they were new 8 years later, but not those Fiestas or Focuses because of the transmissions. Heck, they're worth about the same as a gently used 2010-2011 Focus (which was the previous body style and engine/trans combo). Glad I traded mine in when I did. Yeah I lost about $5,000 on the trade (paid about $20k for mine) but glad I didn't keep it, because it would have been worth, well, $6000 at most now and likely would have had to sink about $2000 in it for a replacement transmission or clutches had I kept it (although Ford did have a settlement on the DCT transmissions, but since I traded mine, I couldn't claim any damages--payouts--from Ford). (FYI, the warranty on those Focuses and Fiestas was 5yrs/60k on the transmission). Now maybe they extended the warranties to 100k but I didn't kep mine long enough to find out (I traded mine in with 27k after 18 months).
