Great video mate. I tend to go with the trusty tarp tent setup. Although I've been meaning to give your 'Gunyah' setup a go. Those Alton Goods 3x3 are just about the perfect tarp. So many tie outs with so many setup options!

Well done man, I was almost not going to watch cause I didn't think it would be all that interesting, but that was pretty cool and I'm about to pull the trigger on an Alton goods tarp. I hope you are keeping safe over there mate, and when you come out of lockdown I'd really love to see a few old school multi day hiking/survival trips with map and compass navigation, comparing where you nav with the map and where you end up on GPS in post. Maybe chuck in a bit more first person view of traversing some of the sections for a more immersive feel. And if you get adventurous it would be awesome if you did some 360 VR vids. There's a video of two guys hiking in to the Colorado river on Oculus videos and then using inflatable rafts to head down the river. It's one of the most immersive outdoors vids I've seen. If you have access to a Quest 2 you should be able to find it. Just some ideas to keep in fresh in parallel with what you are doing. You're a national treasure mate. Love your work. Dead Set Legend.

I grabbed some paper and made origami tarps as I watched :) It's an easy way to compare the inside space when they're all set up in front of you. The Gunya setup looks easy to raise and swap between open & closed up.

I love your videos and I love the fact that you show everyone that tarps are a good choice for shelter. When I am with my dog, I prefer a tarp shelter. I just anchor her lease to the ground and we have all the room and air flow that is available.

Camped under a Hootchie while in the Army. Pros - lightweight, versatile Cons - Mozzies, Sandflies, Bull Ants, Centipedes and an over-curious King Brown. Used a lightweight tent ever since but cudos to those who persist with Tarp Camping.

I've used a version of the "tarp tent" pitch (used to poles at the doorway instead of one) on an exposed bald in the aftermath of a hurricane with 70 mph gusts. Many of the conventional tents were flattened that night, yet my basic tarp was fine.

Just love a tarp shelter. Great for us guys here in the UK where we don't have to worry about to many critters. For ground dwelling, my favourite has got to be a really simple plough point. I like having a tarp for its versatility, but I tend to use it for a shade awning, wind shield, rain fly, ground sheet or emergency shelter (never actually had that kind of emergency yet!) rather than as a primary shelter. If you've hiked in a place where it rains a LOT, it's great to quickly string one up to eat lunch and have a proper rest under. I'm interested in getting a bug tent to combine with a tarp, though, for summer camping - the ventilation would be so much better than a tent.

When going for a tarp camp ,I generally set the tarp tent or a variation of your first setup but different floor angle ,,still having a floor mat but a choice of either a front or side flap door or staked awning ... good use of an afternoon without plans ... in about 4 hours came up with 2 dozen different set ups .. all with a 3X3 tarp ... if only a trail set up short stay for wind or rain/snow ,,I use a plow point .... much like your first ... using a single tree or hiking staff ..

I hike with a super cheap blue 4m x 4m Amazon basics tarp.. The best £10 Ive spent. Ive used it for the last 6 or 7 years. I dont plan to spend the night but it gives me shelter from the variable UK weather when I have a food break. One time I camped under it for 3 days when I got stranded. The weather changed and it was safer to camp and wait it out. I use a similar to the arrow head but I peg out the square back corners and put a walking pole under the front to make an opening and a single guy off the front middle, shove a short pole in the rear to giove a little more room. I dont use a tent any more because Ive got wet in every tent Ive ever camped in.. The tarp doesnt leak.

Tarps are the BEST - except for those pesky ticks, mosquitoes, black flies, spiders and every other bug 😆. My favourite was the first one - the Gunya.

When I did a bit of tarp camping last summer, I took a citronella candle (in a tin with a lid). That worked quite well as a bug repellent.

My Fav: Lay tarp/poncho on ground, lay on trop to one side, hold edge and roll. At 3/4 of the tarp/poncho fold foot end over and finish, pulling head end in last. Excellent video man, thanks for sharing. Sometimes you can not help but use a pole for your tarp set-ups. Personally, I hate the guy lines and the poles. During the night the guy lines are serious tripping hazards (especially if you are partying), and I hate having a pole interrupting my interior open space; so I look for limbs hanging low enough (and strong enough!), for that support. A carabiner tied to paracord (or #36 bank line), lobbed over a tree limb, snap it onto the appropriate tie off point , and heave ho! Pull the cordage to the desired height position, tie it off, and pin your tarp to the ground. Takes me about 40 seconds to have my tarp up, complete, on decent ground/soil. I think it only takes about 1:30 to be entirely soaked from head to toe in a downpour, so knowing how fast you can get your set-up set up is real important. I usually go for the plough point, or the three-sided pyramid, but I have never used a pole with those configurations. Just a personal choice. If a torrential downpour happens instantly you don't really have the time to be so selective. I will use a pole if/when necessary, but it's so much nicer without that obstruction at the entrance, or in the center of the interior. Of course, some configurations require poles/guy lines, but I don't usually set up in those configurations (for exactly that reason). Experimenting with the options a tarp presents is really enjoyable though. I am going to start experimenting with my 10X10. That first set-up you showed is seriously awesome, and I'm gonna' try that one asap. Fortunately, we don't have to worry so much about 'the world's top 10 most poisonous spiders' and 'the worlds top 10 most poisonous snakes' and salt water croc's lurkin' in the billabongs here in rural Ontario, Canada! We got bears and moose and what not, and they are rough enough! You ever catch me camping out in Australia I'll be camping in a camper trailer - not a ground level dinner table!! :) EFF THAT!!
