Scoundrel RC Plane with Cox .049

My Scoundrel at SMALL 2010 horsing around and making some passes. This plane was designed by Steve Adams and built by me. It's powered by a Cox Surestart .049 engine w/6x3 prop. This video was shot before I converted it to a throttled setup. See my other vids for footage of this plane flying with an intake throttle from Cox International.

I used to fly .049's but they were wire controlled. Had to have a big circle area where you could run out the control lines. You had to practice not getting dizzy prior to learning to fly them. I was a kid and it was really fun to do. This was back in the late '50's. Planes were sold in a kit to build or you could buy the completed version formed in plastic ready to fly right out of the box. Great fun back then.

I have friends who still fly control liners. I get dizzy every time I try it. I love to watch them but RC works better for me.

My friend Steve Adams designed the plane. He owns the Select Hobbies model plane business that can be found online. A handful of Scoundrels were built from "pre-production" kits with the original drawings. These plans needed a few revisions before bringing them or the kits onto the market. We had to figure out a few details and improvise here and there as we went along. Contact Steve through his Select Hobbies website for more info on availability of this model.

This plane has a 1oz fuel tank and allows the Surestart .049 to run 6-7 minutes. It has since been modified with a throttle and runs a bit longer at lower RPMs. See my other vids for footage of that setup. Your Black Widow should run about 2 to 2.5 minutes with the attached tank that comes with it.

Emerson lucio It weighs about 12oz and uses a 400mah NiMH receiver battery.

It runs on glow fuel with 25% nitromethane.

Thanks for the reply, the reason I ask is because I just bought a cox cessna centurion with original cox/sawna radio equipment. Its my first rc and I worry its to much for me to handle. What are your thoughts?

Since it's your first RC plane, I'd definitely recommend getting someone to help out with the first flights. Unfortunately, you're not likely to find anyone local these days to help with starting/tuning the Cox .049. You may be on your own there. Check to see if there's a local RC flying club. I'm sure they would be willing to help out if any of the members are old enough to remember how to troubleshoot Cox engines. It's hard to learn to fly if the engine is running poorly or dying prematurely. Another thing to consider is the old Cox/Sanya radio. They weren't all that reliable even when they were new. Be sure to check it out good with a range check before flying. I actually have a friend who has one of those Cessnas in good shape and flies it often with his teenage daughter using modern radio gear. They have a blast with it and have some vids of it here on the tube. As for speed, it would probably compare to the Scoundrel pretty closely. Running these old engines can be a lot of fun and sometimes challenging. These days, lots of electric powered trainers are available and that would be another option for learning the basics of RC flight before trying to fly the Cessna. Best of luck to you.
