Scout Lookout is the closest you can hike to Angel’s Landing without a permit, and it offers much of the beauty of that hike without the anxiety of the chains section. To get to Scout Lookout, we’ll take the West Rim Trail takes us straight up the side of Zion Canyon; you’ll have to work for the views. Once at the top, you get panoramic views of Zion and a front-row seat to watch people navigating the chains. While challenging, this hike has no scary edges, narrow chain sections, or permit requirements.

Just hiked up to Scout lookout today in the the afternoon and I am a 55 year old pretty fit person so I did not have a problem but I took a few short breaks. when you get through the relatively flat area that is shaded part, that is whem you get to Walters Wiggles (the real 21 tight switchbacks) right before reaching the top and has the highest grade (at least it seemed like it). It took about 55 minutes to go up and about 35 minutes to come down. Words of advice that should go without saying: 1) Wear proper footware - Flipflops, sandals and dress shoes are not proper footware (2) Take Water with you and not just one 12 ounce bottle 3) wear a hat as the sun is beating down on you and with the rock all around you, it is hotter than the temps at the bottom 4) take breaks as needed and there are shady spots, especially at Walter's wiggles and when you get higher. While these tips are certainly just common sense, we saw a lot people with no water and wearing flip flops. Have fun and enjoy the beauty of the great outdoors. It is a doable hike if you take your time and take breaks as needed.

Dear Hiking Guy, Just finished the Scout's Landing video. Well, however hyperbolic this may sound, after watching literally hundreds of Zion videos over the past few months, I am ready to declare you the master. The combination of your camera work, excellent, and your commentary, equally intelligent, why could we not have come across your channel six months ago. Keep at it HG, there are thousands benefitting from your work. No doubt a year from now it will be a million.

Fantastic video and even better detailed information.. Hiked this back in Aug 2015, up to Scouts landing, then as far as touching the Chains, then turned around.Fear of height kick in here..Too bad missed other view turning left, going up and looking down at Angels landing did not know about it. Took some spectacular photos of the trail got last picture at top of Scouts landing, where chains began when battery died in camera and no extra one.Bummer if ever of all places...Thank God I got the last photo on top..

I really enjoyed your video. I visited Zion NP( from Australia) IN April. The waterfalls were amazing. I was very happy to make it to Refrigerator canyon. That was far enough for me, and I was proud to get that far. It's a very special place.

I’m both happy and sad that it requires a permit. I’ve been going to Zion for the last 11 years. First trip we had and empty first bus and maybe a handful of people on the trail to angels landing. Last trip before the permit it was way too crowded on the chains so I for sure see the need for it. Super happy to see more people on the trails but on these super popular trails the crowds become too much.
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy Жыл бұрын
Yea, the crowds are the whole reason why I don't even really want to do Angel's Landing anymore. I might make a guide in the future but if I do, I'll probably bike to the trailhead before the shuttle leaves, assuming I can get a permit that is...

Looking forward to hiking here. Question about hiking etiquette. When it is two-way, do you go to the right or to the left of other hikers? So beautiful!
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 3 күн бұрын
Usually stay right, person going uphill has right-of-way. But I've stopped when going uphill plenty of times to catch a breather and let folks pass.

The only real part that could be scary is the very end, and even then, you can enjoy the views by standing away from the edge. You should be okay

Great video better than any other I have found. Did you ever do the chain section of angels landing? Trying to decide if I can get a permit will we go up to the top. If not will hopping to do a few in the area. We over next may from Ireland visiting Zion, Bryce, south and west rim of the Grand Canyon for the first time. 🇮🇪

Hi Cris! Informative video as always. I am planning a trip to Zion in October. Just curious, what are your thoughts on the Angel's Landing (chain) portion of the hike? Have you gone up it? If so, how would you compare it to Half Dome? Have you gone up the West Rim Trail past Scout's Lookout? If so, how are the views? Thank you. BTW....where ia your next big adventure taking you?
@Hikingguy
@Hikingguy 4 ай бұрын
I have done Angel's Landing, def easier / less freaky than Half Dome in my opinion, will get a guide up for it this year hopefully - West Rim higher is nice but same idea as Scout Lookout && Heading back to Grand Canyon tomorrow!

It's all wide path until you get to the end, and you can stay as far away from the edge as you'd like. No sketchy areas on the trail on this hike.

Very nice job as everyone is saying. The 3-D is amazing. Angel’s Landing looks like a knife edge. Who thought it would be a good hike in a National Park? Is Angel’s dangerous? The only person I know who has done the hike told me it’s like flying an airplane. If you are mindful it’s not dangerous. Do you agree? The videos I’ve watched make the trail look challenging if not dangerous. What say you?

Does the Ranger checking Angel’s Landing permits give you a wristband? I didn’t see a checkpoint at the start of Angel’s Landing, or perhaps the start was not shown
